  • PS4: No CD & SACD Support - Who Cares?

While taking a look at various sites for anything PS4 related, I noticed some news regarding CD and SACD not been supported on the upcoming console. Reading various comments, I noticed many were not impressed with the exclusion of such said compatibility. So I thought to myself... Who cares? I have owned two PS3 consoles and over the last 3 to 4 years have only played music CD's, on both, for about 4 hours max. Yet I find some getting butthurt over this alleged exclusion. So what do you think?

    About:
Andrew House said PS4 does not support CD and SACD in interview.

    So no CD music ripping.

audio cd playback is actually quite useful, in my case it was, i had a album that when you put in a cd drive will not rip the audio files to the hard drive no matter what, i put the same cd into my ps3 and it bypassed the copy protection completly i was then able to put the mp3s on my ipod, so a cd feature is still useful to bypass drm on cds, i wouldn't say "who cares?" in any case.

I don't!!!! Who even buys CD's anymore? Digital sales have passed CD sales last year and the gap is sure to get wider! Sure u may have some but still must be a way to rip or download the songs, just drop ur songs on a flash drive n plug it into the ps4! Not surprised at all by this exclusion, should help to keep the price down some as well!

They never said Blu-Ray won't be supported. Blu-Ray is not a CD.

I have never, once, in the entire time I have owned my PS3, put a CD in it.

I agree, i dont really see the complain about this. Well, i'm sure that there are a few people who like to only have one box in their living room that can play both CDs, DVDs, Blurays and play games as well, but i cant imagine that there are a lot of people who will be affected over that the PS4 cant play music CDs. For SACDs in specific, i assume that the people who have those already have a player for it. Do they give out new releases on SACD by the way?

Dropping SACD I'd understand, because they realized long time ago they (sony) lost the fight anyway. Dropping general CD support - I don't really like that.

My educated guess is that they're going with a new hardware solution for the optical drive. You know we once used to call them "combo" drives back in the day

CDs require a specific laser-wave-length and different lenses, so my guess is that they are just cutting costs and go for DVD/BD lenses only. At least we get an optical drive and not the insane 'cloud-storage'-only solution.

I understand the change anyway... I expect no DVD support in the next-gen consoles. After all, someone has to do the bold step and force a change and force people to use newer technology. We're all getting sentimental of "old" (our time) technology, but that's what progress is all about.

Going forward DOESN'T MEAN "to support all previous features". Otherwise we would have found ourselves using a console with cassette-tape-decks, phono-rolls and stereo-jacks, 10 slots for cards, 2 optical drives and 15 video output connectors.

      Sony are reatards Deank!
I will never buy another Sony Console anymore no matter the graphics or functions.
To me PS4 does not deserve so much attention IMO.

@deank I see what you are saying but CDs are not Atracs (well not yet). They are still relevant today in many ways. Yes compared to ten years ago it has scaled back but people still use them. Especially as a backup media for music. More so then a DVD or Blu-Ray.. Many new vehicles still sell a CD player. So the technology is still relevant enough

I also feel it is a way to generate more revenue for the Playstation Cloud from PSone purchases.. As ps3 store content will not carry over.. All this adds up to greed in my opinion. The cloud will suck IMO.. "service Temporary down" Please "try again later" "down for maintenance "

So far with the details about the ps4 I m rather disappointed with the buisness model. Unless things change i will overlook this console.. So far this is the first time i am looking forward to an xbox reveal. I have bought every sony system (excluding the vita) butso far the ps4 looks like corporate greed more then a revolutionary product.

Sony are just shooting themselves in the foot again. I have never owned a SACD so I don't care about that but I play ps1 games quite a bit and I also own like 10 ps2 cd-roms (blue bottom) which I play ps2 games almost every day. I occasionaly use my music cds in the ps3 but I want an all in 1 device (why I own an 60gb) and if I have to emulate my legitamently purchased ps1 and ps2 game discs on my pc thats fine, I won't bother with playstation consoles anymore. If no backwards compatibility and cd removal thing is true Sony, you have lost a loyal customer and I'm just gonna stick to pc gaming.

SACD = Whatever.... I don't own any and have never even seen any forsale in Canada....

      CD = WTF?

I mean its less hardware for them to bother with and less bugs, but really abandoning audio cd?

I can't think of the last time I bought and used one... im all about my vinyl and flac/wav when it comes to buying, but I know plenty of people who arent as lucky and use consoles like a PC

I think with the x86/x64 support things will be good, but this is a really stupid move by Sony that will effect there customer base.

Anyway, the media streaming option offers a work around. Simply share your pc's cd-rom drive and pop your audio cd in that bad boy. No one complained when the iPod didn't support cd's. This isn't news but ps3's have had a lot of laser problems and using the ps3 as a cd/dvd player will only speed up the death. I remember my first ps3 (bc 80gb, which the jerks at gamestop failed to tell me the BC was software only and supported like no games, they also told me that yes, I could in fact install another operating system such as linux on it, even though it had v 3.21 on it) went out after like 3 weeks. I blame Backup Manager / Gaia Manager for this because if they didn't have the awesome feature of letting me rip my bd games I wouldn't have killed it.

play your ps3 on your ps3
play your ps4 on your vita or any other mobile device HELL YEAH!!!

I think the point is more about how necessary Audio-CD playback is in the PS4. I cant imagine that anyone will say "i cant buy a PS4 because then i have no room for my CD-player". People who actively use CDs today at home will most likely have a CD-player. It is understandable that consoles doesnt keep on supporting physical formats forever, especially when extra hardware is required (in this case, a special/extra laser diode is needed).

PS3 Store content wont carry over because of the change in the architecture. It seems that some people (not referring to you, i am just generally speaking) think that PSN games are different from PS3 games, but that is not the case at all. A PSN game is just as much a PS3 game as a disc based game is. The games are programmed up to the PS3 architecture regardless if it is on PSN or on a disc.

The change in architecture has nothing to do with greed. The change is done to make it much more easier for developers. It is also understandable why they wont include PS3 hardware in the PS4, because that would increase the price of the PS4 (the inclusion of both the PS2's CPU and GPU in the first PS3s was one factor to why Sony lost money on each sold PS3).

It has also not been specifically mentioned that digitally downloaded PS1 games wont be supported on PS4. PS1 emulation is done 100% through software, so that shouldnt be much of a problem. It depends a lot how much time and money it will cost to make a PS1 emulator for the PS4.

It is rumored that the Xbox 720 will also change architecture by the way, so i wouldnt expect backward compability there either. But we'll see =)

EDIT: Or maybe you're only referring to the PS1 stuff about transfering stuff over from the PS Store from PS3 to PS4? I wasnt sure since you later on said that the PS4 looked like corporate greed, but the PS4 is a lot more than just playing old PS1 games of course.
