  • PS4 Details Revealed: Coming Holiday's 2013

The PlayStation 2013 Press Conference has came and went. We learned some things, yet we have so many unanswered questions. Ranging from the actual look of the console as they failed to show the unit in the 2 hour presentation, the starting price at launch, full feature set and more questions gamers will undoubtedly have after watching this teaser from Sony.

While Sony kept their cards close to their chest with rival Micorsoft still to unveil the Xbox 720. We did learn that the name will in fact be the PS4 (PlayStation 4). The controller (Dualshock 4) was announced and shown. It's design is much like the recent photos that have surfaced/leaked in recent days, with a new touchscreen (see photos and details below).

Sony has also shown how cloud gaming will fit into the PS4 via Gaikai services which was acquired by Sony about a year ago. Sony is calling the service the "PlayStation Cloud". While Sony was very vague in some aspects of the console. They said the cloud will allow for everything PlayStation to be played via the PS4 when the cloud is established in various stages. They did make it clear the PS4 will not be Backwards Compatible with PS3 disk but did indicate it will be via the cloud. No details were given on B.C. on PS1 or PS2 disc games. Also it seems like a big focus will be on Social Gaming for the PS4. Friends will be able to view live gameplay from your console. With the press of a new "Share" button the PS4 will broadcast live gameplay to all your friends to see. A friend will even be able to remotely take over the controls in game to finish a difficult part of the game. Check below for more details on these subjects and more. Including some PS4 Trailer's of Exclusive Games that were announced via the PS4 unveiling.

    Topics addressed in Press Conference
    • DualShock 4 & PlayStation 4 Eye
    • Digital Titles will be playable as they Download
    • Gaikai will provide instant Streaming of games to the PS4
    • PS Vita Remote Play for PS4 (all PS4 games will be playable on the Vita)
    • PS4 has cloud-based backwards compatibility (no details about disc games)

    Complete Press Conference

Today is an exciting day for gamers everywhere. As you may have seen live with millions of others across the world, just moments ago we introduced PlayStation 4 (PS4), our next-generation console that will deliver breakthrough gaming experiences for our fans starting this holiday season.

PlayStation 4 is centered on all of you – the gamers. It redefines rich and immersive gameplay with powerful graphics and speed, intelligent personalization, deeply integrated social capabilities, and innovative second-screen features. When we designed PlayStation 4, we focused on building an architecture that will allow the greatest game developers in the industry to push boundaries and dig deep within their imaginations to create the most immersive and unique games for you to enjoy.

    Killzone: Shadow Fall

The future of PlayStation is all about great games and entertainment, and at PlayStation Meeting 2013, we brought some of the brightest and most creative minds from the development community on stage to unveil the games that will define PS4. A partial initial lineup for PlayStation 4 includes first-party games from Guerilla Games (Killzone: Shadow Fall), Sucker Punch (inFamous Second Son), Evolution Studios (Driveclub), and Japan Studio (Knack), as well as titles from our partners such as Activision/Bungie (Destiny), Blizzard Entertainment (Diablo III), Capcom (Deep Down), and Ubisoft (Watch_Dogs). PlayStation also reinforced its commitment to self-publishing and the independent development community by having Jonathan Blow onstage who gave a sneak peek of his upcoming title The Witness. Finally, the incredible minds at Media Molecule and Quantic Dream gave glimpses of their conceptualization process and the future of gameplay with some remarkable footage. We only scratched the surface at the event, and will have many more exciting titles to come.

With so much amazing content in development for PlayStation 4, we want to give our fans every opportunity to check out virtually any PS4 game when it becomes available. In the future, when a gamer sees a title of interest in PlayStation Store, they can immediately start playing a portion of the actual game.

    Knack

Our next generation console will change the way you interact with friends while you play. PlayStation 4 lets you instantly share images and videos of your favorite gameplay moments on Facebook with a single press on the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s “share” button. You can also broadcast while you play in real-time through Ustream, allowing friends to comment or jump into your game in new ways. Be sure to check out the post from Shu Yoshida, WWS President, for his thoughts on DUALSHOCK 4 and the “share” features.

With PlayStation 4 we also want you to access your games quicker than ever before. PS4’s “suspend mode” eliminates the load time on your saved game and allows you to immediately return to where you left off by pressing the power button. PlayStation 4’s background downloading and updating capability also allows you to immediately play digital titles as they download, or update the system when the hardware is powered off.

Leveraging PlayStation Network with Gaikai technology, PS4 will make it easier for you to play your favorite games and access content wherever you are. We see PS Vita as the ultimate companion device for PS4 and it’s our long-term vision to make most PS4 games playable on PS Vita, so you can bring your favorite games from the big-screen TV to your PS Vita over Wi-Fi. We’re also introducing a “PlayStation App” for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices that acts as a second screen, allowing for unique gameplay possibilities such as viewing maps during an adventure game or remotely watching friends play during an epic battle—right from a smartphone or tablet.

With so much to look forward to in 2013, I want to take a moment to thank you for following PlayStation through our incredible journey and allowing us to bring the most advanced hardware, software and networked gaming experiences into millions of homes around the world. We’re excited about this next chapter, and will continue to provide you with more details about PlayStation 4 and the broader PlayStation ecosystem, as we get closer to launch this holiday season.

Announcement Trailer's for PS4 Exclusive Games

    Specs
    PlayStation Eye

    PlayStation DualShock 4

    PlayStation 4 Console

    Hardware

    Dualshock 4 & PlayStation Eye

I’d like to give you a tour of DUALSHOCK 4 and the features that will provide game developers the freedom to create brand new experiences that previously were limited to their imaginations.

    Design

DUALSHOCK 4 adopts the familiar form factor of the DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller with some key enhancements:
    • Motion control is enabled by a new highly sensitive six-axis sensor
    • Dual analog sticks fine-tuned for better precision plus improved surface materials and shape for more delicate manipulation
    • L2/R2 buttons on the top of the controller employ a curved design for easier, smoother interaction
    • A new “Options” button combines the functions of the DUALSHOCK 3’s “Select” and “Start” buttons for operating in-game menus

New Ways to Play, Share and Connect

In addition to these features that build on the controls that you already know, DUALSHOCK 4 offers new features that enable new ways to play, a key part of the PS4 experience. One of the biggest innovations we’ve designed centers on the deep social interactions that will surround all games on PS4.

The “Share” button allows you to easily broadcast your gameplay in real-time through streaming sites such as Ustream, where fellow gamers can comment and even join your game in new ways. For example, if you’re stuck in a difficult level, your friends can offer health potions or special weapons that you can use during gameplay. You can also instantly upload images or video to Facebook by pressing the “Share” button. As both a developer and a gamer, I’m personally excited about the opportunity to get help from friends when facing a challenge, and I can’t wait to see what my friends are playing in real time along with videos of their favorite in-game moments.

On the front side of DUALSHOCK 4 is a light bar with LED that illuminate in various colors to match the color of the character in a game as a simple way to identify players. The colors can also provide useful information to players, such as when their character has taken damage during a game. DUALSHOCK 4 was developed alongside a second peripheral, a dual camera which can sense the depth of the environment in front of it and also track the 3D location of the controller via its light bar. The new camera incorporates four microphones capable of accurate sound detection and source origination, and it will support the PlayStation Move motion controller with more precision than ever before.

DUALSHOCK 4 also has a touchpad at the front of the controller as a new input method, offering more ways to interact with games. Additionally there’s a built-in speaker and headset jack to deliver high-fidelity sound effects from the games. A headset will be bundled with PS4, enabling gamers to chat with friends during online gaming and to hear sound effects from the controller.

There’s a lot built into DUALSHOCK 4, and the features were all thoughtfully designed with input from the development community (both our internal studios and third parties) and PlayStation gamers. Our goal was to give game creators an open canvas to express their ideas, and DUALSHOCK 4 combined with DUALSHOCK 4 will help us achieve the future of gaming that we at PlayStation see ahead of us.

I find it strange that some people expect and feel entitled to backwards compatibility. It is rather silly. It isn't Sony's obligation to do it. It is the consumer's responsibility to keep their PS3 if they really want to play PS3 games. PS4 is not a PS3.5, it is a new console. Just because Sony made BC consoles in the past, and were the first to do so, doesn't mean they are automatically obliged to do the same with every console.

Make a second model for BC? You have to understand that most of the time console manufacturers lose money on the consoles they sell. They are sold for less than what it costs to build them and they make money from the games. To make a BC console would cost SO much more they would have to either lose a shit load of money in making them or have them at such a huge cost more than the non-BC model that no one would buy them and complain about the "ridiculous" price of it compared to the other model.

People are so hard to please because so many are self-entitled.

Really? I was not aware of that. Thanks. I'm king incline into buying a PS Vita. But, with the announcement of PS4, I'll probably wait a little more.

I agree. I even think about a Nintendo WiiU being able to actually play those cartridges from Nintendo 64 and SNES. Which is a extrapolation of the Backward compatibility concept.

While you make valid points there. Here is why they dont hold water with me at least .

Slim ps3 can now play ps2 games now on 4.xx FWs with PS2Classic in the store.. Well why does someone need to buy the game again? Why cant they just put their GTA: SA ps2 disc and play, as the GTA: SA ps2classic is the original ISO. So this could be a reality but sony rather have the $10 bucks from you. even if you have bought that content already..

So instead of giving customers complete B.C. like they did in the PS2 and early PS3 days. they changed the model so they could essentially milk the same customers who made each system a success by supporting them over the rivals.

Look at what sony did to FAT owners taking their linux away. Sony had an obligation there as they sold the system to users who wanted linux..

So to me its about sony correcting wrongs more then feeling ENTITLED as you put it. They are even saying that old ps store purchases wont carry over which is complete BULLSHIT..(so i guess it was an expensive rental?)

Say the PScloud does have ps3 titles available as they claim it will.. And you bought that game on the PSstore for the ps3 why wouldnt that title purchases carry over.. One word GREED..

So i believe Sony has more of the entitled attitude more so then users wanting B.C. With today's technology they could easily make the system full B.C compatible. Also i feel it is even more important as the hardware don't last and production has ceased. (PS1 and PS2 and PS3 one day). In the end they will make the ps4 full BC compatible on the cloud but you will have to re-buy your collection. So that's why users feel ENTITLED because they are sick of rebuying their collections over and over.. I mean renting their collections over and over again.

Hell why not have a premium models that does it all natively, for a higher price? That to me would make sense but they wont do that because they feel the current model will make them more money in the end. So they are happy with that even if it means screwing over their customers..

krytonic I know making a console at launch costs alot and games sales make up for the lost money per console sold but here is where i see a problem with your statement. What if my ps3 dies and its out of production, what do I do with my ps3 games then. When my ps1 died, I just bought a ps2 because I knew the ps2 was backwards compatible and I didn't have to search for a ps1 thats outdated anyway. Manufacturing the necessary hardware for ps3 backwards compatiblilty in the ps4 woudn't cost sony alot, the ps3s cpu and gpu costs sony around $120 to make right now (both not each), they can easily cut it down to $70 or even $60 by shrinking the nm from 40 (gpu) and 45 (cpu) currently to 22nm or even 14nm and also by merging the dies of the cpu and gpu together like what was done to the ps2 and xbox 360. Sony can sell the ps4 $100 more and make $30 to $40 more per ps4 with backwards compatibility included. Also what would sound more appealing to customers, the ability to play ps1, ps2, ps3 and ps4 games or just the ability to play ps4 games. I was absolutely appauled when sony announced the ability to play ps2 games on any console but you had to REBUY THE DAM GAME. I know someone is gonna say "well the ps2 games are remade for the ps3" don't believe me and others like STLcards have said, ok do this, download lets say ps2 gta3 psn pkg on whatever website you can find it (im not gonna name sites), decrypt the package and you will find the game content on the psn pkg compared to the disk is IDENTICAL, so Sony can make disk based ps2 backwards compatibility on every ps3 but just as what STL said sony just want to milk money out of their customers and if this is the case for the ps4, im not gonna buy it simple as that. I've dealt with enough bullshit with the ps3 I'm not gonna go through it again.

It is our responsibility to keep the console to play the games we want to play, not Sony's. They are not obliged to give BC at all. It costs them money to do it so why should they? We buy a PS4 for PS4 games. PS3 games is for the PS3. If your PS3 dies years later it is not their fault. When Sony made VHS players is it their fault when yours dies and you can't play your VHS tapes anymore? Are they obliged to make DVD/Bluray players backwards compatible with hardware?

You are really looking at this in the wrong way ..

I understand where you are coming from but one key thing trumps all that. They are reselling you digital content you have already paid for. Why doesn't Sony allow you to download the content for free if you have own it all ready?

When you buy a disc product you pay for the content for 98% or more of the price.. Not the disk correct?

      A couple examples:

      PS2classic:
They could play the disc on slims now. but sony blocks this. Why? greed, they want you to rebuy that content again from PSN store. Even though the technology is there in the ps3 unit allows for the disk to play on slims now with the Improved emulator in 4.xx FWs.

So that is taking advantage of the consumer.

PS3-PSN purchases will not carry over to the PS4 Sony reports.. (but guess what that same content will be on the cloud)

So if you bought hundreds to thounsands dollars of content well guess what when your ps3 dies. that content is done.. So did you really buy it? I bet when ps3 production stops then the ps3 store will not be supported either, so even if your console survives your content will not be there because the ps3 store will not be there.. So they sell you the content and you actually don't own it..

Why cant a psone,ps2claccis or ps3 games (that will all be on the cloud not carry over) GREED..They want to milk every dollar they can..

Yes i agree its up to the consumer to take care of the products but no matter how much you take care of. They still will not last.. Besides Who wants 3-4 consoles when you can have them in one? and its is very possible.. In terms of emulation. How much money has it took Squarepusher to make all the great emus for the ps3. compared to a compnay with endless resources. They spend more on a corporate lunch then that each day.

Yes Sony is not obligated to do this as the consumer is not obligated to buy and fall in this business model again.

Sony could do right by transferring purchases from PS3 store but they said to this point they wont.. That is a slap in the face to everyone who bought content. Then like i said its only a matter of time before sony says the ps3store servers will be shut down.. So you never owned that content you rented it at full price.. THAT'S WHY SONY IS OBLIGATED TO DO SOMETHING IN THAT REGARD>.

Now Sony announces that the ps4 will have no CD support. come on CD support is not a high dollar item but guess what they can sell the shit out of music and PSone classic by removing it.. That is the issues. I sure in the hell will not support a company with it business model like that and either should anyone else. If that is the business model they have @ launch.

I agree that if you buy something from PSN, so a digital copy, then they make a PS3 software emulator to get digital copies to work then sure they should give you download and play it but that is not the point I was making. The point I was making is they are not obliged to make the console backwards compatible at all. The people I was calling silly are the ones who seem to think Sony MUST make their PS3 discs work, or that Sony MUST create a software emulator for PS3 downloads to work... They don't have to. But yes if they do make a software emulator for downloads and you downloaded a game on your PS3 I agree 100% it should be provided on the PS4 as well.

Well it depends though.... on the BC argument. The reason why Sony stopped doing the BC models was because of 2 things. Nobody wanted to pay 499 - 599 on a ps3 with no major games out. It was also costing Sony a shitload of money.

Idealistically it would be nice for the Ps4 to be PS1/PS2/PS3 BC but how much you actually think that console gunna cost? It took 2-3 years for the ps3 to even become 400 bucks with a price drop by dropping BC. It would be more wiser to just keep your old console to play IMO.

For me I never really gotten into the hype of BC on my Ps3 because it was pretty rare of me to play ps2 games again which I haven't. Not saying the Ps2 sucks but in reality the Ps2 in general brought better games to the table than the ps3 ever did. Killzone came from Ps2... GOW came from ps2... devil may cry came from ps2 and etc..etc.. I have more better memories playing my ps2 Shadow Hearts than I do with my ps3. They games are far shorter but they do look pretty but idk

Ps2 is like a legend! Simple but to the point. I know eventually I will buy a vita and a ps4 in the near future but Sony gotta focus on the main thing. GAMES! GAMES! GAMES!

About the ps2 classics.... they are a rip off to owners who already have those games but for me the Hitman collection I never played hitman and also when I bought the GOW Collection I never played GOW like that so the classics are in a nutshell.

krytonic yes Sony don't have to but the ps4 will sell more if backwards compatible. What I'm trying to say is an all in one device makes more sense, the ps2 was at the time, the ps3 60gb still is. For Sony to say "oh you have to buy your ps2 games twice to play on your ps3" that mindset is absolutely wrong. If sony had a system where it would check your ps2 disk then download the game for free on psn that is a better system (of course you must have the disk in every time to play so you can't pirate), maybe they can implement this on their ps4.
We live in a generation where all our device are backwards compatible, blu-ray players don't have to be backwards compatible but they still are because people are still happy with their dvd collections, windows 8 is backwards compatible with windows 7/vista/xp...etc programs because people expect this. Usb 3.0 is backwards compatible with all past Usb revisions (usb1.0/2.0 blablabla). Sata III is backwards compatible with Sata II and Sata I hdds. The point I'm trying to say is almost everything is backwards compatible to a certain extent. I want my ps4 to have ps1,ps2 and ps3 backwards compatibility because I want an all in one device. I don't have enough room on my entertainment shelf to have all of my playstation consoles hooked up to my tv.
Also playing ps1 and ps2 games are better on the ps3 because they look better when using hdmi cord(can also hook it up to any pc monitor, not just ones with composite, component inputs), the analog video cables (composite, component) will always suffer some screen artifacts that can't be removed, because ps3 can use hdmi, the visuals from ditigal cables suffer no screen artifacts, ps2 games load 2x faster in my experience, making infinite virtual memory cards (I have only 2 ps2 mcs and have used up 5 vmcs on the ps3), 1st party wireless controller is just awesome(where i sit, the ps2 controller cord just reaches me), 3rd party wireless controllers ones on the ps2 are shit in my experience. If somehow people can still find backwads comaptibility is bad for ps consoles then I don't know. The ps4 will have enough power to software emulate ps2 games, maybe even making them native 1080p like on my pc.
As I stated before the manufacturing of the Cell and RSX is only a bit above $100 and can be slashed by merging the dies and shrinking the die to 22nm or 14nm so It doesn't cost much, the EE+GS for the ps2 would only cost sony $60 to $70 at the time when the ps3s were backwards compatible, blu-ray is the reason why they costed so much not the ps2 chips.

slim psone still kickin, slim and fat ps2 still goin strong.

im sure my psx and first fat ps2 would have survived too if not for swap tricks and bad cheap dvd/cd-r lol

keeping systems clean, and using them for only games made for that system have kept them alive for me.

just bcuz my ps2 played dvds doesnt mean i should slash its life span to shreds playing movies and old games on it ffs.

same for ps3. i put a blu ray in there once, but the pc has a blu ray drive and its on all the time anyway.

why kill your brand new system doing anything but playing games on it? isnt that what its all about? the games for that system? nothing beats playing the games they were meant to be played: on real hardware.
for me, anyways, i will get any flashcart/chip etc etc i need if i can play on actual hardware.
