  • PS3 Linux RSX Driver Released

Around this time last month, gitbrew announced on twitter they had released RSX documentation, because they had reached enough donations within a twenty-four hour time limit. Well people were complaining the document they received was not what they were expecting. Member at gitbrew, daxgr, has released a Linux RSX driver, and also noted that this driver would have been noticeable to everyone, "WITHIN 24 HOURS" after the donations.

Here is his official statement in regards to the whole situation:
Well I am pleased to announce that RSX Driver for Linux is released. The RSX driver is the product of hard work by durandal and glevand, who gave up many hours to accomplish this. So here you go, the link for the RSX driver: git.gitbrew.org/~glevand/ps3/linux/ps3rsx.tar.gz

On a side note, may I add that contrary to public belief for 5 YEARS, the RSX does not rely on DMA to process graphics, but rather uses PPU instructions to push objects to RSX VRAM. So... yeah another breakthrough by the team who scammed everyone.... Gitbrew.

PS: To all those who started complaining about this noble effort to enable RSX on OtherOS(/++) , such as "gitbrew is a scam" or "they are just SDK samples", check out the date of the file.

Gitbrew was always about developing things for developers AND users alike.
Sadly, users don't always appreciate the effort, a simple omission to include the release URL, that was due to durandals medical condition and glevans personal issues, seems to be enough...

Well keep that in mind, Gitbrew gave their word to release a RSX driver and succeeded; anyone who had cared to browse glevands directory WITHIN 24 HOURS of the donations would have seen it.

    Regards,
    daxgr@Gitbrew
This release is a Linux RSX Driver. The RSX "Reality Synthesizer," is the PS3's graphics-card. Basically, this is for dev purposes.

Now this is great news. Thanks Gitbrew for all your hard work. I have read around on many sites and the concession is that this is not an actual driver but a Linux kernal module. So only when a dev builds on it would it become as useful as a fully working driver. But will enhance Linux usability. And no, you cant run hardcore games within Linux either. So this is not user/noob friendly. Distro's like red Ribbon would have to be updated in order for it to be useful.

they should have a step closer to CFW 3.70 or any method to play newest games pity on them

but their main reason was to bring OtherOS which they did .

Sooo basically this gives us better graphics processing support in linux? Cool I don't use Linux on my PS3, but i may if it become more on a complete experience.

The RSX driver was leaked a while ago and is used in Red Ribbon Linux and let me tell you it's FAST.

(Sorry for being a noob)Does this mean we can use N64 emulators on Linux on the PS3?Could I run MineCraft well on the PS3 with Linux?Or is this just so the OS runs a little faster?

You'd have to wait for someone to code that and find out. Obviously with more GPU power, a lot more things cna be done. But things also need to be adapted to the RSx i believe, seeing that the PS3 isn't setup internally like a PC.

@brakk3n Do you have proof that the "driver" is implemented in Red Ribbon. Not looking for a flame, just amazed i missed it. I have been waiting for RSX prior to installing Linux. Can you elaborate please. @amp2006 Nice recovery on your post. @konio38 Possibilities are all their but would take a advanced Linux dev to pull off.

Red Ribbon uses the RSX for Linux's swap partition and let me tell you it really, really speeds things up. Well apps and all. Emulators, etc ... still need to be optimized (along with the core code). I'm not 100% sure that Red Ribbon uses the leaked code, but right around the time it was leaked it was implemented in Red Ribbon. Forget YDL, UBUNTU, etc ... Red Ribbon is da bomb. It's too bad I only had a few hours to mess with it. I'm still not going to hack0r my ps3.

is it only going to be incorporated into red ribbon? what about ubuntu?will this mean that someday soon if someone builds an sctual driver for ubuntu on this then we can have 3d games, and the cube desktop and compiz effects running on a ps3 ?or would still not be powefull enough to handle that
