PSX-SCENE Forum Discussion for Sony PlayStation/PsOne/PS2/PS3/PSP/PS VITA
  • PS3 Internal HDD Encryption Disabled by Graf_Chokolo

Despite Graf_Chokolo's house being raided by police and a legal battle with Sony, he continues to release his PS3 discoveries. Today he has unveiled a very interesting aspect in PS3 development regarding PS3 hard drive encryption. His discovery is a method for disabling hard drive encryption, which would allow you to use your PS3's hard drive in any other PS3 console.

Guys, take a look at “ps3dm_sm set_del_def_encdec_key” command. You can disable/enable virtual FLASH/internal HDD encryption with that And by patching HV process 9 (which sets ATA keys before loading GameOS) you can disable it permanently. It means you could swap your internal HDD and use it on another PS3. But you have to restore the content on it after disabling encryption because all data will be encrypted of course.

Soon i will implement ENCDEC device driver for PS3 Linux and you will be able to experiment with ATA encryption. ENCDEC device is responsible for VFLASH/HDD encryption on PS3.

For more details, see my HV page here: http://www.ps3devwiki.com/index.php?...se_Engineering

And thanks to PS3 Linux fans who help me to test my ps3dm-utils Huge thanks to you guys. I can have fun with PS3 even without having one actually

      I really disagree on that....

Multi-man is updated twice a week, sometimes even more...
there is a ps3 media center that just came out...
      naima cfm...
      ps3ita...
tons of methods to by pass psn came out...
      and so many other stuff...

things will go a little slower now that sony has made a "huge update" on the way things works on the ps3 and on the authentication... But sooner or later more wonderful stuff will come out.

this is amazing and hope that things keep coming from graf... usage example:

Ps3 at home on main tv, ps3 in bedroom, ps3 at work.... 1 hard drive 1tb in size for now holding all of your games/linux/videos/setting/gamesaves/ect

Move hard drive from point a/b/c no need worry about not having your stuff with you no matter where you are or on top of that being able to bring your hard drive over to a friends house and having all of your stuff there with you to use on his ps3 system.

even tho i'd love to live in such a scenario, i'm sad to say this ain't crossing the realms of wishful thinking!

Sata data connectors have a connect/disconnect cycle of maximum 250 times. And this is in the post-2009 WD/Seagate 2.5 inchers...for the older ones, it's even lower

You won't want a perfectly okay drive, full of your save games and 'backups', with a broken connector! After all, warranties only replace the hard drive...not your save games

I know this is off topic but I switched my hardrive but my ps3 wouldn't let me backup my harddrive to my eternal (it would keep giving me errors) any idea of how to restore my game saves to the new drive? (I'm so close to beating dragon age 2)

Off topic...yes. Perhaps you should start a thread. Advantages to starting your own thread include but are not limited to: 1.) Having your own thread 2.) Knowing exactly where answers and replies to the topic are (Not having to rummage through 200+ posts) 3.) Respect from others 4.) Faster answers

      On topic: Graf...You Go Girl!

It's great we got rid of yet another DRM feature that restricts the console. This might speed up things slightly even for just gaming, because there is always additional latency and CPU overhead involved with hard disk encryption. Sometimes it can even limit transfer speeds significantly. At least it becomes easier to just connect PS3 hard disk to a linux PC, mount the file systems and backup your game saves or transfer other files. I guess this could be already possible with unencrypted HDD because the file system and partition table drivers exist at least in the PS3 branch of Linux.
