PS2 Emulator Working On CFW 3.55 - FAT & SLIM

Now here is something that will interest many a scener. Recent additions to the PS3 developer wiki explains how you can run your original PlayStation 2 discs on your custom firmware 3.55 console. And it seems another dongle goes down since this method does not require the use of a Cobra Dongle! A game compatibility list is in the workings so lets test it out and report back your findings. Please note that in order for this to work you will be replacing files on your console. So make a backup of your /dev_flash before proceeding.

About Playstation 2 Software Emulator:

Getting Playstation 2 Software Emulator working:
Method (on Firmware 3.55, without! Cobra-USB Dongle or Downgrade) for all consoles (fat & slim).

Replace following files on your consoles /dev_flash/ with the ones included in this archive p3dwik-ps2compatfiles.rar
Get into Factory Service Mode (FSM Tool/Dongle)
Insert your Original PS2 Game Disc
It will run.

Note: Backups wont work. You're getting the compatibility of the 2.60 software emulator with all of its bugs.

seemed really great til i saw you need to be in FSM. Also, the game or two i want to REALLY play doesn't play well :/
I really don't wanna mess around with FSM or flash files too much (i'm still on cex even though dex looks attractive).

this looks pretty safe so i look forward to what people have to say

how to exit factory service mode

again, west coast can bite. i am about to go to bed and this news is released. i want ps2 compatibility so bad; then again, this does need a little working on so more games can work.

i haven't looked much into it, but try googling "ps3 usbld loader" or "open ps2 loader". they're said to also maybe give better compatibility. that'd be awesome... *drools*

Yes a Cobra Dongle. But in my opinion it is still best to have an Actual BC PS3 first to play PS2 Original or Backups.

I can't see the compatibility of this method being any different than a Cobra Dongle method on Non BC PS3's.

But accually if you have a backwards compatable ps3 and a swap magic disc you can load ps2 isos off a USB hard drive.

Or you could buy a cobra dongle, now eat noob shit and choke to death.

No, it won't be. It does allow you to run ps2 games without a cobra though, which is something.

It's almost as if people don't even realize that it's much easier to rip your disks to an hdd and play them from there. Or that an hdd that could hold every single ps2 game someone might ever want to play takes up less space than even a single game with its case. Or that hdds load faster than disks. Or that hdds can't be scratched up and ruined the way disks can be. Or the million other reasons other than piracy to play games from an hdd rather than the original disk.

Maybe. I am just saying the compatibility may not be any better. And that should be mentioned before people all going into FSM on their PS3 just too try PS2 Original games.

Plus this isn't really news, as I remember a guy on PS3hax or somewhere posting this method a long time ago.

Hmmm... Got myself CECHA here, but statement was completely clear - software, means ps2_softemu.self involved, which I can't say about ps2_gxemu.self. Anyway, gonna make some tests.
While back at 3.55 it refuses to launch Gran Turismo 4, due to region restrictions as it seems, cause I have 01 model, while the disc belongs to europe.
Also, as for ISO's - IMO, it won't take that much to simply use remapper syscall for redirecting dev_ps2disc to any specified location. Just take your time and show some patience.

If it was that easy don't you think they would have tried to do that already? And why do you think it has been so hard to get the PS3's PS2 emulation to work in the first place?

The big problem with the way the PS2 emulator works on the PS3 is that when the PS3 loads a PS2 game it almost completely replaces the PS3's own OS with the PS2's OS, and in that process it throws out anything loaded into the PS3's memory, which includes any syscall redirects.

mikael110, you seems pretty concerned, so I'll be straight. I didn't mention LV2 patching - it's definitely needed. Yes, gameOS wiped out almost completely, but some environment still persists, as well as booting parameters. For example, there's couple of games that requires installing at HDD's special partition, and the paths are not wiped out, but instead holds in memory for launching sake. I'm telling you, cobra team did this somehow, moreover they used almost same syscalls, however they way of lv2 patching is still a mystery.
That wouldn't be easy and I didn't claim to be, though it possibly can be done.

yeah I'll agree that it's certainly not impossible, as cobra has proved. I just wanted to express that it wouldn't be as easy as setting up some simple sycall redirects which is what I assumed you meant in your original comment.

But if you were talking about figuring out the method that cobra used then yeah that would certainly be good, nobody has been able to figure that out so far though.

Gave a few games a try and the compatibility is exactly the same as far as I can tell, and I can't see it getting better any time soon considering cobra team has been at it for 2 years now. But hey, the more eye's on it the better I guess.

I see it as a good step in the right direction. 100% compatibility might not be on the cards but I do hope for some improvements. @windrider42 It's news here or at least to me and some others. But thanks for your input.

I was bummed to find my newly ps3 bought last week was a 60gb that wasnt backwards compatable & my swap magic from ps2 shows up in multiman but doesnt work thats it but still happy witth my ps3 but i did so much enjoy the ps2 & games my brother decided to take with him to ny many years ago that were mine.

but hey i like to see this progress even though, most see as not useful which is not a surprise to me by now..

i love to see things i forgot about or didnt even see as i do mods for everything i mean everything moddable i do it all & time is against my blindness. on updates for everythingi is time consuming plus bleeding eyes never did anyone good.

so though you see no usefullness in little acts of dev guess what that shows that when you leave a negative comment i remember & build a more understanding of your avatar character which by now is laughable for those with negative words.

& how little you give to the world of creation. though i am big & small to the world my actions are big ripple effect to those who care about progress no matter the content or progress as long as it is a forward step. with support from the users.

im sorry but i can no longer sit by & just let things i could never do no matter how good i think i am just get ridiculed just because of small willed minds.

I cant use my controller after i started a game
I have a SLIM and using KMEAW. Tried with GTA San Andreas, WWF Here comes the pain and Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy
Tried it with cable and without. Tried with both USB ports

I've read similar reports, but nobody is including their model # - that could be a factor.

Looks the same to me. i also remember the thread. I wonder if there is any difference or if its exactly the same.

EDIT: Its not the same. Using that method you had to downgrade to 2.?? so kudos to people that discovered this.
