PSX-SCENE Forum Discussion for Sony PlayStation/PsOne/PS2/PS3/PSP/PS VITA
  • PS Vita's PSP Emulator flash0 Dumped!

Some interesting information has recently hit the PS Vita scene, via a full dump of the Vita's PSP emulator flash0. The dump includes the kermit modules, and the PS Vita kernal keys; which means hopefully this will lead to kernel access, and we can enjoy many more homebrews on our PS Vita.

An unknown Vita developer has shared an interesting link some hours ago, which contains a full dump of the flash0 of the vita psp emulator - Including the kermit modules and the psvita kernel keys! This dump can lead some professional Vita developers to kernel access, which will give us the ability to play nearly every homebrew. backup launcher could be possible aswell, but for these ones a high rank developer would be needed for programming it.

tthousands tthoughts - While the dumping process has not yet been released, this is still another step in the right for the PS Vita scene. We can only hope that more comes from these developments.

I was about to say that exact thing Sora. Sony would never, not if they want to keep their customers, who a good portion of are still angry at them.

Either way Excellent job and looking forward to watching the vita scene progress!

Seriously...do you know think $ony would remove a feature? Look at how they re-acted to the 3 games that allow use of the Vita Half-Byte Loader (they took them off the market. Not as if they released a simple patch, they pulled them. If there is an exploit focused on the PSP aspect of the VITA I believe $ony would remove that feature as a whole. Now that is not what I want but looking at history what do you expect? Anyway good work on this

Two of them are back already, and the third will be once it is fixed.

once the exploit is known sony will patch it, and everyone will have no choice but to update, especially if new vita games come out, it will end up like the ps3 scene, this is all in my opinion so dont get all excited.

sony have learned from the psp days and the vita has so much control and restrictions it will be hard to keep the vunrabilties on there with forced firmware updates (you have to update if you want to use the vitas features and new games that you have brought too.) sony will keep changing the firmware frequently to block the exploits and ginuwine users will start to get pissed at the hackers, but you have to ask them is it really worth the time and effort to hack the vita if it will have the same troubles as the ps3 scene?

I'm betting that feature can be turned off permanently, once the Vita is hacked completely. If it can be turned on, it can be turned off. If they do do updates and so forth. It'll only be like the PS3 now. If you wanna play with such things, you must update.

well, duh. go back to the times when ps3 consoles could actually run ps2 games.

and yes, psp compatibility could be zapped under reason of "cutting costs" when newer ps vita models come out eventually. it might work for now since vita does not have much native games yet.

The PS2 backward compability was removed from PS3 due to cutting cost, but here physical chips were removed. It is something very different with the PSP stuff on Vita, since this is purely software emulation. A more similar comparison would be to remove the PS1 backward compability from the PS3 (which is done 100% through software emulation). The PS3s that have PS2 support still have it to this day, even on firmware 4.11. It works fine without any problems

Sony could always use the "cost money to maintain support" reason though, but i doubt it. Then things must get really out of hand before something like this is concidered.

A more similar comparision would be with the OtherOS support in PS3, since it was purely software AND it got removed because of alleged "security concerns".
And there is also the Cinavia thing, where Sony crippled their Blue Ray players (PS3 included) with mandatory updates after people have bought it.
Sony has a long history of removing featires or crippling their devices after the purchase. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it happens again in the future.

OtherOS is another example of a software solution that was removed indeed, but there is a big difference here. When OtherOS was removed, it was one function that stopped working. If Sony removed PSP backward compability on the Vita, it means that every PSP game you bought digitally will also stop working (assuming you dont have a PSP to play them on of course). So if one person have bought i.e 10 PSP games, he/she loses 10 functionalities, so to speak.

OtherOS was more of a novelty and a niche thing in my opinion. It was cool that it worked, but Linux ran so slow, so it wasnt really useful for much. There also wasnt much homebrew made for it as far as i know. Many of the people who complained about the removal also did it out of principal rather than being affected directly by the removal.

But with PSP games, this is something that has a much more broader appeal. Here people have also invested extra money into PSP games. Removing such a functionality will have a much bigger impact. Worse case senario, i can see that newer PS Vita models wont have PSP backward compability, but i cant see that the function is being removed from already sold units.

Did some original Bluray movies stop working on the PS3 after the Cinavia thing? I havnt heard any problems with that. I tried a Bluray movie from 2011 on it, and that worked perfectly. Doesnt seem cripled at all to me.

What have Sony removed in their history after people have bought their product? I only know about OtherOS. That desnt seem like a long history concidering that the company have been making products for 50 years. They have a longer history of adding features

This is good one step closer to homebrew in my book.
