  • Proposed Sony Plans To Use Biometrics To Prevent Piracy

DRM has really come a long way from the days of entering the word at page 6, line 3, word 2 of the user manual to be able to play your purchased games. A recent patent by Sony involves the use of eye scanners, finger prints and possibly DNA to verify that you are the owner of a piece of software. I just thought you guys would like a taste of the possible future for Sony products and DRM

    About the patent:
Website playstationlifestyle.net uncovered recently a Sony patent that describes a system to track your fingerprints, iris, and dna in order to prevent hacking and piracy, as well as for targeted advertising purpose. Sounds like a great idea… not.

Your Identity and your privacy are today the major assets giant tech companies fight to control. Google has proven that targeted advertising is a very profitable business, and all companies want their share of the loot on your personal information. Beyond this, companies like Sony, that sell digital products, are spending considerable amounts of money to protect their products from piracy, through the use of malware DRMs.

In and “ideal” world, DRMs would recognize the person who paid for some specific digital content, and let that person use the digital content on whatever hardware they want, whenever they want. This was, actually, the promise of DRMs and of the cloud. But practically, what DRMs actually are today is a strong limitation in how you can use your purchased content, which is usually restricted to a few devices (it used to be 5 for Sony, it is now 2), a few allowed copies (something that goes along the law of many countries), and is in general a major pain in the a##. People who bought Ubisoft games recently might know what I am talking about. Bottom line is, DRMs are not doing what they are supposed to do.

Sony think they might have a solution, by providing a patent which proposes to recognize a user through biometrics, such as their fingerprints, iris, or DNA. Such a system they say, would allow to create a system such as “By associating content with an authorized user, each download may be made unique so that only the authorized user (e.g., one who has paid for the content) will be able to access it. Such a technique may be used to prevent hacking or copying to steal music, software, video games or other copyrighted content“.

In other parts of the patent, Sony explain: “the invention can be used to prevent unauthorized sharing of online accounts. A biometric identifier, such as a fingerprint ID, that is generated during ordinary use of the online content allows the content server to determine whether a user attempting to access an online account is the user associated with that account.”

Sony also mentions improvements to targeted advertising, when your device (potentially your console) knows who is actually currently using it.

Well, I’m all for the possibility to play the content I purchased everywhere I want. But storing my DNA on the servers of the number 1 target of hackers worldwide is definitely not the solution to that. How about we simply get rid of DRMs, and let people enjoy the content they purchased however they want? Last time I checked, selling mp3s without DRM seemed to work pretty well for companies like Apple and Amazon. HumbleBundle is doing great with DRM free video games, etc…

Hopefully, this is one of those patents that get filled but never used… How about you, would you like Sony to play with your biometric information? Do you think hacks in the future will require you to alter your DNA with the help of radioactive injections?

They should also implement a lie detector and a gatling turret/bomb device to get rid of piracy once and for all.

Don't be silly, barcodes can easily be scanned and copied. Microchips on the other hand...

you do realise these are fake apps right?

"Make them think that the iPhone or iPod touch actually has fingerprint recognition capabilities."

      idiot...

next time go and learn how a touch screen actually works.

As for Sony doing this DRM stuff, I very much doubt they would ever use such a system on commercial products, perhaps internally inside the company to stop things leaking but outside... no. Even if they they did it would be so easy to hack on system that can be taken apart as it is public it would be pointless to put in.

And the FBI are hiding in the bushes outside your house. xD

A touch pad or screen on devices like the ipad and vita can NOT scan finger prints... It can not detect the little individual lines that press against it when you push your finger on it.

That has been done to my boss at work... He has been mircochiped since the 90's just the other day he had a small incision on the side of his head to upgrade the chip installed.

Lol, i'm glad to see that people take this with humor Pretty ridiculous, especially the DNA stuff. There isnt a home device that simply can scan your DNA like that. Fingerprint and iris scanners are old, although i'm not sure that iris scanners are advanced/cheap enough yet for home usage?

I laughed at the comic too, although the serial keys are mainly used to prevent used sales, not mainly piracy.

Extracting is one thing, but how do you read and store it?

Oh, the technology excist for sure, i didnt mean to say that Storing and reading DNA has been possible for a long, long time, but this are things that are done in laboratories as far as i know. The idea that a simple device for a home electronic device that can read and store DNA in a very easy fashion seems too far fetched to me. At least in the near future, who know what will be possible in maybe 10-20 years from now.

But about storing info like this, i think that the consumers rights in most countries are too good for something like this to happen. It would mean that a company would have access to your fingerprints, iris scan and/or DNA. Something like this is simply unacceptable, and the consumers rights wouldnt allow it at all.

I'm not really sure what the point of this patent is to be honest.

I'm just wondering, spread the word about what? This is just a patent. No matter how ridiculous it is (and the patent seems to be more about general usage, not that it is suppose to be used for DRM only), taking patent on something and putting the idea to life are two different things. I do however wonder what the point of the pantent is.

i honestly don't think this is gonna happen, sure they can say it is, but it would run the price of the cosole to close to 1000 dollars just to make sure someone doesn't steal 60 dollars.
