  • ProgSkeet Shipping to Reviewers - Arriving to Retailers Soon

IceKiller has revealed that the much anticipated ProgSkeet chip is now being shipped around the globe to reviewers. In addition, official suppliers across Europe will begin to receive their supply of ProgSkeet chips by July 28th, followed by the rest of the world shortly thereafter. For those of you unfamiliar with the ProgSkeet chip, it is a NAND/NOR programmer similar to the Infectus chip but suped up. The ProgSkeet allows users to read their NAND at 1MB/s sustained speed, which can be compared to the mere 50kB/s allowed by the Infectus chip. In addition the ProgSkeet offers a much higher range of compatibility in comparison to the Infectus chip. As exciting as this project sounds, users should probably weigh their options and hold off until the release of the competing, open-source PNM project.

'users should probably..hold off until the release of the competeing, open-source-PNM project'.....umm what? These are ENTIRELY different projects. One to help owners downgrade from 3.6xx and use the board to program eeproms etc etc (good value for the money), the other to source public keys to implement into lower firmwares. The PNM project may be open source but how many people do you think are going to have boards with dual Nor sockets lying around or will make one for the project? Just because it's open source doesn't mean it's accessible to the masses (there's irony in there somewhere), and besides, the PNM project might deliver public keys which is great, but once you have them, then what do you do with your dual-nor board, drinks coaster anyone? No_one has already stated that PNM Project is to recover keys, good luck to you guys with it, but please don't compare the two! Two boards are announced around the same time and you idiots have them paired off against each other like Rocky Vs. Drago.

I don't even know where to start - I guess I’ll break everything down:

I assume you are talking about the ProgSkeet - if you think the purpose of that particular device is to "help owners downgrade from 3.6xx" you are mistaken - the device is a NAND/NOR reader (it is as simple as that).

To be fair, the ProgSkeet is NOT even a PS3 device: it was designed to be able to read any NAND/NOR with the right configuration.

Again you are mistaken - the project is designed to add a dual NAND/NOR functionality to the PS3 along with this you could potentially do the dual NOR exploit mathieulh briefly talked about.

The PNM Project is open-source AND open-hardware - the idea is that eventually you can build one yourself (chances are someone will build a run of them - ozmodchips etc.). But still - The PNM Project was designed to be able to read the PS3s NAND/NOR (starting to see the similarities yet - they are both NAND/NOR readers!)

Your lack of understanding and your ass-hat-ery makes you call people idiots, yet we have to look at you talking shit (about which you know nothing about) in a giant wall of text

@shadywillie I'm sure it probably can but i'm also pretty sure this dual nor board PNM is using is custom made so as yet not available to buy. The PNM Project was initially spouted as for enabling Dual Firmware on your PS3, then it was spouted as being designed to recover public keys, now it's apparently a downgrading tool. All i'm saying is that there is no 'one against the other'. These are all good projects which move the scene on, but have some varying objectives, (which appears to have been completely overlooked here). The Teensy downgrade method has really progressed (congrats to all involved) to the point of being available to anyone with the skills/cahones to start soldering and Progskeet is available to order now with drivers already on-line (with the added bonus of quick write times and multi-usage). 'Holding off' for PNM is a pointless/misleading statement. Let's support them in finding the public keys, but if you want to downgrade, and don't mind burning your fingers, there are other options already out there.

Why 'eventually' build one yourself when you can buy Teensy or Progskeet now if you're desperate to downgrade (which is the majority of owners wishes)? The people I called idiots (a bit strong i agree) are the ones who are pairing these excellent projects against each other which have potentially different uses. I understand fully regarding dual-boot, (dospeirida is doing the same) and the intentions of each project. Thanks for your condescending reply though damox (however i'm used to reading them by now). You appear to be well qualified in putting everyone straight on just about every ps3 scene site out there. Good job.

speaking of dual boot ,couldnt someone just make an infectus ,that has an sd slot connected to it ,and some other chips so that it could reflash itself from an sd ,so you could reflah your nand/or teensy with similar add on and nor, without having to connect to your pc all the time to reflash and not having to have 2 nand or nor chips? would it be cheaper?where you would have an infectus , that can reflash itself from an onboard sd slot?obviously with a power cycle, but how long would it take for a nor? for a nand?to power off and reflash and power back on, would it take as long as a fw update?or would it only take a second of 2 ?obviously it would depend on the hw used ,but what is possible?could it be done so it could reflash really quickly?

Neither one is being designed for just downgrading... I think you have managed to miss the concepts of each project. The concepts are to read and write to the nand/nor. Which will allow downgrades but not just that... with the dual nand/nor the possibility of having a JB system that also has the latest firmware at the same time also full access to the flash....

As for damox "putting everyone straight" i wouldn't know but i think he's right in correcting your comments. The PNM Project will be a definate asset with the dual chips...

I'm not trying to annoy you or anything just saying .... you have valid points too...

      You would be suprised.

Try looking up other hardware/software that has been designed to read and write NAND/NOR chips. It can run you into the thousands.
