PSX-SCENE Forum Discussion for Sony PlayStation/PsOne/PS2/PS3/PSP/PS VITA
  • Pave The Way For Next Gen Console Gaming

With the eminent release of the "PlayStation 4", which has now being given the alias "Orbis", there has being an abundant amount of speculation revolving it's evolution into the next generation of console gaming. With new technologies available many are hoping for a game console that not only shadows it's predecessors but out right obliterates them in all areas. There is talk of dropping the DualShock control that we have become accustomed to with biometrics, to the more controversial end of the used game market. Like I said this is all just speculation. But what concerns me the most is the future of the PSX scene and will there be one?

So lets take a step back and delve into the history of the PlayStation scene. A prime example that debunks my above statement is the legendary PlayStation 2. A console that Sony only recently seized production on and has undoubtedly one of the largest scenes in console hacking and homebrew. So with that said we can rest assured that the PlayStation 3 scene will survive, especially if Sony backs off while concentrating on it's latest console, the 'Orbis'. In fact we could see a rebirth of the PlayStation 3 scene and possibly the return of some developers, who felt the risk that Sony imposed was not worth participating, and thus releasing work that was once a guarded secret. The possibilities are endless and I'm sure that you would agree that there are many unexplored avenues of the PlayStation 3 and the power the console possesses.

Now moving forward is a question I have asked myself many times. A question that arises whenever a new console is released. When will the 'Orbis' be hacked? Looking at the PlayStation 3, which was a reasonably formidable foe, one wonders what Sony has up their sleeves. Will past misconceptions find their way into the next generation console or will the security pose a threat to the 'Orbis' homebrew scene? My guess is as good as yours...

      Very nicely written.

I have a couple other thoughts that I will add in little while (so as not to run late getting to work ).

I agree with the writer SceneButNotHeard, that perhaps after the release of the Orbis, the PS3 scene could stretch it's legs and bring many new advancements to such said scene.

All I can say is you can probably forget about being able to soft mod the new Playstation. The epic goof that lead to the 3.55 private keys being found will likely not happen again.

Unfortunately, I see Original Drive Emulation being the future.

Don't be so sure. With keeping in mind that it's all rumour, both the Orbis and Durango use x86 CPU parts. While that doesn't inherently mean there's any security issues to be had, it does mean that the "talent" pool of hackers that may be interested is substantially higher.

What I would like is a console that allows for backups and homebrew, but with some form of unique matching of codes between game disc and console so that said backups can only be played on that hard drive, but one can only dream....

"When will the 'Orbis' be hacked?"

Well maybe never.. look at 3DS for example. Nobody managed to hack the 3D side of things yet.

Can probably forget any kind of media on this... it will likely be digital content only. No ODE.

Sony won't allow games to be backed up on the hard drive and be played without a disc in, no matter how much security is on it, just in case someone finds a hack for that bult-in feature. Look at Microsoft. If I remember right the 360 allows you to backup the entire disc on to the hard drive but you still need the disc in to play the game.

Their fear of piracy slows progress. Happens in all markets... Look at the record labels that tried their best to stop legit MP3 shops online.

Imagine how good a console would be if no time and money was spent on building security for it. They simply don't need security... Look at PC games. Very easily hacked, usually the day of release or before but still very profitable. The only reason console games make more money is because more people actually play console games than PC. An example of this is the guys who make The Witcher games. Their PC games don't even have any DRM you can pirate it with no cracks yet they make plenty of money from their PC games.

Lets hope this time round the include at least 4GBs of RAM and VRAM (should be 8GB for both).
Also, they should at least allow developers to release patches or re-release of some great games that run with higher textures at 1080p and not the fake 720p which is really 640 upscaled.
Imagine Red Dead Redemption finally running at real hi res 1080p.

      It make sense
Do because of the previous PlayStation's
      Were no't Backwards Compatible
      Well on the other hand,
Sony just see it as reselling the same old stuff
That We love to play and also they my polish it up a bit
But at the same time We would no't care too much about re buying
The hit title's Just for it to be on are newer Console?
((That is what is going on now))
There may no't be as much to pick from but it's the same concept,
The PS3 have a Emulator with in the PS-Online store free to Download
But They offer PS2 title's that you have to pay for
Knowing that you may have the same game laying right next to you? lol

I been around since the days of the NES I remember waiting outside funcoland almost 20 years ago to get my PS1 it was the coolest thing I had ever seen (at that time). But if sony cuts out used games then they can cut me out too. I will not buy the PS4

I agree. Sony has paved the way for normal every day gamers to do what they are told but has blocked anyone who is willing to put some time in and efforts to try to create something new with what was offered to us. The PS4 can wait and show low sales from us sceners.

      Good article
It always starts off on a unknown path
Is it or is it no't? "Hackable"
If Sony did not learn from their past then Yes it would be possible
But if they have learn something then there going to focus a bit more on security
Funny thing is that The Homebrew Channel is on ((Wii U))
And the Wii U was Just release on November 18, 2012 in the Us
Its the 1st of the Next Gen Gaming Consoles.
The next one up to bat I'm guessing something from microsoft then Sony?
One more thing I would like to see the Next Gen Console here and now,
So the PS3 can get less and less attention and developer's can come back
      with out any harassment.

      Homebrew Channel on Wii U

Absolutely agree with you I said exact same thing when I bought my PS3.The way I figured with the technology continue to advance there is always something better that comes out.Its hard to keep up and also getting more expensive and with this economy, not everyone can afford it.

Hack proof console = bad idea. Anyone know's numbers between xbox and ps3. Xbox also hacked very next day when it came and that was a huge advantage, games and accessories sales to grow naturally.
