PSX-SCENE Forum Discussion for Sony PlayStation/PsOne/PS2/PS3/PSP/PS VITA
  • Official Update - Cobra USB Dongle v3.1

It seems that some issues were there when, the team behind the now famous Cobra USB, had released its 3.0 software for 3.55 compatibility, along with their own custom firmware for PS3 consoles. The Cobra Team have addressed these issues, and have brought their package to version 3.1. It is advised that you update to the latest firmware, to avoid any bugs.

Here is the quoted official announcement of issues that were addressed and fixed:
Cobra Firmware 3.1 is out, minor release to fix bugs.
    • Fixed stability problems. Cobra users are advised to update to this firmware as soon as possible.
    • Fixed compatibility issue with Mortal Kombat.
    • Fixed PAL/NTSC issues in psx games.
    • Bugfix: some few specific psx titles such as Langrisser Final Edition wouldn't play in other regions.
    • Fixed a possible discless bug under very rare circumstances.
    • Cobra USB Manager can now understand the ".001, .002, ..." name convention used by hjsplit and other similar programs and rename them automatically to ".0, .1", name convention. Users can use hjsplit or any other similar tool to split iso files in the PC.
    • Added functionality to the core to implement a cobra firmware updater in the PS3.

Can confirm PSX frame rate issues are fixed. Still does not support Multi-region DVD. Set the Region to 1, put in a Region 1 DVD and wouldn't play... None did. Not to sure if this will be fixed in future updates, but great that all PSX games now run at full speed!! Oh, but Jap Silent Hill has a horrible sound bug when you shoot an enemy. The sound will continue until another section is loaded in. But great work from the Cobra Team and hope you continue to support the Cobra USB for a long time to come!

i know imma get flamed for this, and its not an issue for me really, but anyways, with all the dongles like cobra, ect ect, it is very possible in my opinion that someone can take some sort of engineered chip and integrate it into a usb loader like this, and have it run ps2 games on any model ps3, im just saying, all someone would have to do is devise a chip that would work for playing the ps2 games, size wouldnt be an issue if you were getting what you wanted (thats what she said anyways).but i dont understand why someone hasnt released a loader that can emulate the ps3 emotion chip, and reroute the data through the chip so it can atleast play iso's from an external hdd, maybe incorporate it so that you plug your external hdd into this device and then plug the device into the ps3.sorry for the lengthy post, but read it anyway, because you know you want to.

High end PCs have trouble emulating the emotion chip, so putting that all in a dongle would be quite a feat.

The broken link on the Cobra website is for the CFW, not the actual dongle firmware. Also, PSX issues don't seem to be 100% fixed. I tried 3 PS1 games so far, 2 PAL and 1 NTSC on the console. The NTSC one works, and one of the PAL ones works correctly aswell. But the second PAL game (FF7) still has those issues.
