  • Official Showtime 4.2 Released

It has been around six months since we have seen the previous stable release of Showtime Media Player. Developer Andreas Öman and team have released version 4.2. This official release includes added chapter support, incorporates thetvdb.com, subtitle plugins and the virtual keyboard that I'm sure you already knew about. I have also included a list of fixes and additions spanning from the last six months.

    About Showtime 4.2:
    Some highlights:

    Virtual keyboard
    Integration with thetvdb.com
    Chapter support for movies
    Support for subtitle plugins
And as usual, a lot of bugs squashed
Here you will find some bug fixes and additions done over the last 6 months or so.

Really hopes this release sorts out the playback on quicktime files that you get on the youtube and navi-x plugin. The buffering on it can be really bad. Great work though, this is the best reason for cfw on the ps3

I have had this issue with MKV files and subtitles for some time now, when I ever I try to view an MKV movie with subtitles through Mencoder I get "corrupted data" on PS3 movieplayer and "connection lost" with this latest Showtime. This happens with both PS3 Media Server and Universal Media Server.

Movies work fine without subtitles using ffMpeg or TsMuxer. Anyone else experiencing this or know how to fix it? Thanks in advance, also thanks for the new version of this player.

My only gripe is that "automatically play next video" doesn't work when viewing from a media server. But that's a pretty small complaint in light of how much use I get out of this software.

Problem solved. PMS 1.60.0 (17.7.2012) works like a dream, 1.70.1 and 1.72.0 not.

I need help!! I can't figure a way to use remote play in showtime. I have already edited the PARAM.SFO but it just won't work. Maybe it is related to Shotwime being in the TV Column in the XMB or something. I want to be able to watch any videos in my PSP via showtime

I thought that had already been fixed? Either way, you can go into multiman in remote play and access showtime through that to watch stuff.

If your PS3 is connected to a PC via router, install either PSM ( PS3 Media Server ) or UMS ( Universal Media Server )

This way you can stream your video from PC, be it 4 8 or 40 gigabytes.

      Hey mate,
Can I ask what sort of setup you are using?

      Thanks,

for example via lan & SMB share ( smb://ip_of_the_pc/sharename )... no media servers or anything needed just good old samba

      Hey Raydan,
Do you have the Samba share set-up on a Windows 8 machine? Is this easy to do? I want to stream from my laptop directly to the PS3 ideally without using any media server like TVersity, UMS etc. as none of them really work well but am not sure how to go about doing this?

      All the best,
      Mark

If you want another solution then using PSM or UMS (and you are using Linux on the system you want to stream from) go for MiniDLNA, it's a wicked small DLNA-server, with some features none of the transcoders have.
Both the mediaserver solutions transcode in stead of stream, so using Showtime to play the transcoded streams on your PS3 in the first place is kinda stupid, it's already a tailored stream for the PS3, so you can just play it from the XMB then. MiniDLNA embeds the subtitles as stream and thus makes em selectable, Showtime understands this, unlike the XMB, also if you hook the opensubtitles plugin you basicly never have to look for subs again.

So far I have not encountered any file that would not play (except h264 level 5+, but those are rare, and can be easily recoded/transcoded)

Cheers eeeeek! Of PSM and UMS which is the better? I tried PMS last night and while it was easy to set-up etc. when I actually wanted to steam an MKV from the PC to my PS3 it played and then skipped\jumped to a random point and continued with this for the same file every time I tried it. It happened with another completley differnt file as well. Any ideas why this is happening? Maybe I should try UMS and see it it happens as well?

I should say that the PS3 and PC are both wired to my router behind my TV.

      Thanks,
      Mark

If I put Ubuntu on the PC that I have all my movies on can I then use MiniDLNA to stream directly to Showtime on the PS3?
