UPDATED: News coming in from the Tokyo Game Show brings the all new slimmer than slim PlayStation 3. The 250GB version will be released on September 25^th and bundled with Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception GOTY Edition, Dust 514 and $30 of Dust DLC voucher. The launch price for this will be $269.99. For those wanting a larger capacity HDD will have to wait till October 30^th. This limited bundle will include a 500GB PlayStation 3 coupled with the much anticipated Assassin's Creed III and a free 30 day PlayStation Plus voucher. This one will set you back $299.00.

If it was possible to make SwapMagic for PS3 It was already released. I can use my PS3 without upper case and opened BD-ROM.I think its not possible coz what are u think about booting back-up discs? Swap Magic has CD loader system on PS2(Elf file boots back-up disc). PS3 is more secured system. We cant even boot any 3rd party program over 3.56(maybe 3.60 coz we have keys) except DEX. If you can run a 3rd party program with SwapMagic over 3.56 you are able to run MM I think. I'm not a developer but I can see somethings clearly

Looks really nice...
Would be great to get one...
So before in previous generation of consoles we had only one slim model,
now is new fashion--2 slim models for generation.
Interesting to know---will microsoft release second "Super Slim Xbox360?

Can PS3 Super Slim run Linux?

What is funny---it consupts---190w, like previous models....

Does someone know where is port for installation of HDD in PS3 SSlim?

1. Nope, it cant run Linux. This feature will most likely never be included again because it was used for hacking in the PS3.

2. No, the PS3 Slim alread halfed the power consumptions that the 1st PS3 did. The first PS3 could use around 200w when playing games, the PS3 Slim uses around 100w. I dont think anyone have done any power consumptions test on the new PS3 Super Slim yet.

3. I havnt seen it yet, but it has been said that you can use standard 2.5" HDD on it.

Linux was not used to hack the PS3 and was not the reason it was removed. It was costing Sony too much money to maintain a feature that not many people used. If OtherOS could have been used to hack the PS3, it would have been done a long time ago. It wasn't until OtherOS was removed that people really started hacking the PS3. The first PS3 Jailbreak used 3.41 which didn't even have OtherOS in it.

My big issue with this model is the likely hood for the lens dying quicker due to dust as the lens is right out there in the open and we all know how delicate the Blu-Ray lens is.

Linux was not used to hack the PS3 and was not the reason it was removed. It was costing Sony too much money to maintain a feature that not many people used. Your correct sir removing OtherOS was actually the reason why geohot started looking into exploiting the ps3. He didn't like the idea of them removing it, and naturally as a programmer he will try to get linux to run on anything. He just happened to stumble on to a whole lot more then he expected in the process.

@ccfman2004 that's not quite how I remember or understand it, OtherOS (on 3.15) was used by geosnot to find an exploit (he had a 3.21 CFW /OtherOS that he never released) which prompted $0ny to remove OtherOS but they told the public it was cost reasons as they had already removed it from Slims so there was no apparent reason for them to also remove it from Phats which were and are stil capable of running OtherOS on 3.15 @ no cost to $0ny

The 190watts is actually a PSU power output, not the total consumption rate per kwh.

Although that PS3 had 380watts PSu, it doesnt mean that they are power hog device, actually there's only 10-20watts difference between Fat BC and a Slim model when playing a game. Although Slim PS3 is win when in XMB which drops to 80watts but Fat stays in 120watts power consumption in XMB.

There are two things to OtherOS. You're right that it was removed (or rather, not included) to begin with when the PS3 Slim came out. And you're also right that Sony gave the reason that they did this because it was too expencive for them to maintain this feature indeed.

After this happened, Geohot started looking to hack the PS3 as bitsbubba mentioned. At this time, all the old PS3 Phat models still had OtherOS. Shortly after Geohot had showed his exploit, Sony removed OtherOS from the PS3 Phat models too. I dont think this is a coincidence, but who knows.

So two things to this case. OtherOS was removed from the PS3 Slim models before any hacking attempts was done. But it was removed from the PS3 Phat models after Geohot showed his work.
