  • Naehrwert - PS3 HDD Decryption POC

Here is another one of my favorite PlayStation 3 developers. Naehrwert has announced on twitter a proof of concept. This POC involves the decryption of PS3 hard-drives. What does that mean to you? Access to the HDD via your PC.

Read my post above. You can't use this if you're above 3.55, unless you've already got your root keys, and it serves almost no real purpose, except recovering data in the event your ps3 dies.

or, if by some weird chance... we got the 4.21 priv keys..... and not the pub keys....we could possibly get core os and dev flash and modify them, then repack them into a CFW

but like i said, we would still need the newest private keys to repack the firmware. and even then, i dunno if that would even be possible.

THIS IS NOT EVEN RELEVANT WITHOUT THE PRIV KEYS, AND MAY NOT EVEN BE RELEVANT ANYWAY, DO NOT MISREAD WHAT I SAID PLEASE ;P

      EDIT:

      on a side note....
if you can decrypt the hdd with the root key, wonder if you could re-encrypt it with the root key also...

you can put files on a ps3 that is not modded or a dev unit. the hardest thing to do when you want to run unsigned code is to get an exploit to access the files, if this lets you drop files on that means that sony will have to find a way to verify all data on the drive, or they will have to require formats, or just leave it be as the ps3 should be dead in about a a year and a half.

To me it is a good tool. I have been wanting to upgrade my 320GB to 1TB for some time now but backing up the entire drive had been holding me back. I tried backing up once and it said the estimated time is 88 hours.
Now I think that becomes easier and I can see in front of my eyes what is happening. I can cheery pick files I need and let the rest be scrapped.

Not unless it was at some point modded.

And considering it has been possible to run a decrypted hdd for the last year and a half, i highly doubt any exploit will come of this, just because of this.

Well we could just re encrypt it .. Just look at hdd studio although it's a diffrent method it proved the re encrypt works.

Reading the other comments here, it seems that the PS3 wont read the harddisk unless it is encrypted. If that is the case, you need to encrypt the harddisk again before the PS3 can use it, and i doubt that the encryption keys for the harddrive are the same as the decryption keys.

Also, don't you think this would be useful to people with their PS3's corrupted hard drives and RSOD'd PS3s? They could backup their data before formatting. Currently, the only way to access data on your PS3 HDD is through your PS3 itself. If the PS3 is shot, there's no way to backup the data, even if you switch the HDD to another PS3 afaik. I may be wrong about that last one, but I know a lot of people don't have 2 PS3s, me for one.

Correct. Another ps3 would not be able to access it either.

You would need to have already dumped your root key before the ps3 died, but fortunately a lot of people are doing that now to convert to dex.

I thought PS3 HDD decryption was already achieved by Graf Chokolo? (Remember him? )

Not really the same thing. That didn't decrypt the hdd at all, it just allowed you to use a decrypted hdd.

This. You don't know how terrible it is booting up your ps3 and it saying "files are corrupt, you need to format all your data to use this HDD". Good thing I had a spare PS3. My 640gb hard drive was mostly full when my PS3 decided to screw me like this. None of my gamesaves were backed up to PSN either.

This gives me hope. I hope a sort of gui comes out later.

First we need a compiled app in PS3 side for GameOS to get these keys, and app in PC side which not only support this custom USF2 but also give user opportunity to type his own key and decrypt/encrypt it on the fly. Probably will pass months before someone will do it.

Anyway, I have waiting for this day many years. Congratulations and thanks for Graf and Naehrwert.

We have been able to do this for a long time now from graf so why is this such big news? Once the encryption is removed you can only access the stuff that was added after the encryption has been removed, all the old content still can't be accessed.

Because it was not possible to decrypt the hdd. It was possible to reformat it without encryption. It's not the same thing, and serves different purposes.

hm, in theory, if one could use unencrypted hdd in PS3, wouldn't it speed up PS3 a bit? if no on-the-fly decrypting/encrypting is needed, CPU usage/temperature should be little lower.

I haven't looked closer at the PS3 at all, but I'd say it's safe to assume it is indeed the same key for decrypting as for encrypting. This is due to the fact that symmetric encryption is faster than the asymmetric counterpart.

      We have not.
How to disable HDD enc? - PS3Hax Network - Playstation 3 Hacks and Mods

And as I understand correctly, this will not for removing encryption on PS3 side but dec and enc on PC for i.e data recovery in case when You get a YLOD/RSOD. This is completely different things.
