  • Naehrwert - PS3 HDD Decryption POC

Here is another one of my favorite PlayStation 3 developers. Naehrwert has announced on twitter a proof of concept. This POC involves the decryption of PS3 hard-drives. What does that mean to you? Access to the HDD via your PC.

I have no idea to be honest. I just know that the encryption/signing key for the firmware is not the same as the decryption keys. Maybe there are different when it comes to things on the harddrive though.

They are entirely different situations. Using a separate key to encrypt/decrypt is extremely useful if you want people to be able to decrypt the data, but not encrypt it. The hdd needs to be both encrypted and decrypted by the user's system, so there's no reason to have separate keys.

hello there, sorry to sound ignorant all, i did register on this forum just to ask help. so yesterday, i decided to finally upgrade my hdd, seems simple enough, i figured i didnt need to back up my ps hdd because i have a docking station, so bam, i should just be able to polug it in, and reboot everything, yes?? well, apparantly, noone ever mentions in thoese tutorials, that you cant do that because of ps' encryotions. all i did was remove the old one, put the new one in format it, then realize i cant access the old one.. i am not a hacker, nor do i understand the lingo. i am however hoping that someone will understand and hopefully help or offer some kind of assistance... i still have the orig 40g, all i want is my data and saves... annny help would be appreciated, i would even compensate. thanks in advance!!!!!!

You need retrieve ata key etc form your PS3 (so you need also CFW) and wait for app supporting this fs support. For now you can make sector by sector image of this HDD and wait for tools.

i really appreciate this, but i dont know the first thing about modding. i have, i believe it is a first gen 40g. with only the two usb ports. if i put cfw on it, can i not go on the psn anymore? i dont know anything about doing that sort of thing. i dont understand how even just removing it renders it useless.. i didnt format the orig drive, so it in theory should just plug back in and work like normal.. this makes me want to sell my games and ps3.

You can just put it back in get a usb hard drive do a backup then swap to your new drive and restore your backup. Trophies and some copy-protected stuff can't be backed up like that so you'll need to get it back off of psn.

i already tried that... this is exactly what i did... remove orig drive... put in new one, format it... plug in old drive via docking station to ps... no avail, plug in to computer, no avail... so i put the old one back in the ps, and it said i had to format it.. which i didnt, because then i would lose all the data that is there, but is somehow undetectable because of encryption... all i did to the other drive is remove it from the ps, so why is it saying its not recognized??????

I think its some sort of copy-protection. it probably uses different key for each hard drive or something.
you should have read about it before installing new drive, it has been mentioned many times.
afaik, with cfw you cannot play on psn, but you should be able to go back to ofw and then online.

PS3 want format old drive because she assigned new HDD. So it's normal that she don't recognize old one. It's protection layer of this system prevent for shuffling different HDD with different contend from different consoles.

As I said before, keep this HDD safe and when easy method will be available you must jailbreak your console and get the keys. Only then you can decrypt old HDD on i.e PC. So just wait. Keep this HDD save, make sector by sector image and wait. You can also in future married old trophies data from old HDD with new ones from new HDD (but npaccount must be the same).

-i figured it was copy protection. i also firgured, at this point, that it was mentioned everywhere. on the quick and easy tuts that i looked at when doin a google search for how to switch out hdd's for ps, they never mentioned it. yes, they do say back up your data, but they dont say that using the hdd and a docking station (like how any other one should work) in fact, dosnt in this case.

""PS3 want format old drive because she assigned new HDD. So it's normal that she don't recognize old one."" \
-i also figured this happend... i assumed it assigned a new one, so when i put the old one i didnt re format it... so yes, i will keep it safe for when something does comearound. let me restate this, i know nothing about cfw, and instaling it, and "breaking" a ps3.. i have a hacked psp, and i know how to play roms on it, thats it..... what does "make a sector by sector image" mean? is that a way to infact see what data is on there, but yet is indefinitly unaccesable?

It is not "copy protection". He don't know what he talking about. ;]

Sector by sector copy - it is a copy making copying from first sector to the last. It is making HDD image just like disc image. There are many apps for making HDD images, using many different tools and method - for unknown data the only way to doing it properly is reading all sectors.

For Windows I propose using MHDD. For Linux, dd.

riiight, so why exactly would Sony encrypt hdd? just to fu*k with people data? it is preventing you to pirate games by downloading them and selling hdd full of them to other ppl. I call that 'copy protection'. you call it whatever you like.
      @op
there is a windows version of dd, too. but be careful with dd, they call it 'DiskDestroyer', because if you swap source and destination (for eg.), bad things happen.

It does no such thing. If you can run backups from an hdd, you can also copy anything you want to it.

So...? There's nothing stopping people from selling unencrypted hdds full of games.

If the person buying the hdd is able to play the games, then they have the means to copy it to their own hdd anyway.

you can't use unencrypted hdd in ps3. that's the whole point.
duh, pirating is making an unauthorized copy. encryption is used to prevent pirating, thus its a copy protection measure.

Sure you can, just plug it in via usb.

No it's not. You can easily copy encrypted files. It's used to prevent people from reading them.

we are talking about the internal drive, not usb.
so what if you can copy encrypted files? its preventing making 'usable unauthorized copies'.
      you're nitpicking.
some games have had protection 'look in that page of manual and type the word.. blabla'. so that is not 'copy protection'? as I said, I call it that, if you have problem with it, sorry..
btw, I also call all trojans simply 'virus'.
