  • Major Corporations Quietly Drop SOPA Support

The recent news on the web regarding the Stop Online Piracy Act was not digested well by many websites and their members, not to mention the recent message to Sony from “hacktivist” group Anonymous. (Which I feel is unrelated, seriously.) Today news comes to me that Sony, Nintendo and Electronic Arts have removed themselves from the SOPA bandwagon.

    To Quote:
Major game companies Nintendo, Sony and Electronic Arts have quietly removed themselves from the official list of organizations that support the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).

For anyone who’s unfamiliar with it, the proposed SOPA legislation gives both the U.S. government and copyright holders the authority to seek court orders against websites associated with infringing, pirating or counterfeiting intellectual property. If the act passes, it could drastically change the way the Internet operates.

On the surface, the gaming companies probably threw their support to the bill because it would also help curb piracy of gaming. However, I’m sure they’ve been paying attention to the onslaught of negative press and customer dissidence experienced by domain registrar Go Daddy over the last few weeks.

In Sony’s case, it’s probably best to stay clear of any piece of legislation that would draw attention from activists. Earlier today, “hacktivist” group Anonymous pledged to once again take down Sony’s Playstation online gaming network due to the company’s SOPA support.

Overall, public support for SOPA seems to be crumbling, as a number of big companies have removed their names from the official congressional list

The people supporting Anonymous have lost touch with reality. These guys are low level terrorists that have not attacked Sony. They have attacked Sony's customers. That means each and every one of you. They shut down PSN. Sure it cost Sony some money, but it also cost the customers their access. They gained access to your accounts. THEY ATTACKED YOU!!!!. They are putting themselves out there as some kind of Robin Hood, but they are just ordinary thugs. They aren't doing a damn thing for anybody but themselves. Does anybody really think that these methods will accomplish anything?

Totally missed the point. Sony and any other company has every right to protect their intellectual property. Never mind the fact that this bill had no hope whatsoever of being passed with or without their support. All this hate for Sony. All I could suggest to you is go buy a 360. Oh, wait, Microsoft is a monopoly. Guess you just have to give up gaming altogether then. It is such a cop out to quote the corporate fat cat line. Sony employs thousands of hard working every day people. And if you count the distributors, truck drivers, game stores, electronics employess at Wal-Mart, Target, etc, you are looking at hundreds of thousands of jobs. Sony is not the devil. They are not the antichrist. They are a business and they provide a good product and for the most part good service. They aren't doing anything that any of you wouldn't do in their position. They are protecting their livelihoods. And like I said before Anonymous attacked YOU - NOT SONY. Don't believe the hype. They're no better than the corner dope boy. They are just a drain on everyone else in the world

I believe Anon attacks Sony's PSN, because as soon as it's down, people start to learn what's the beef against them is. It's a very strategical move and very affective. It's one of the basic moves in the Art of War.

I can see how this can be seen as an attack against end-users, but I am slowly beginning to see it from the anon's point of view. Very effective!

Name one report of one of the millions of cards taken being used, they took it and announced it and kept it public as a scare tactic. Agree or disagree with thier reasons, they did not steal from us charging the cards would be stealing from the banks.

It really doesn't matter if they used them or not. Just the fact that they took them and used them as any kind of leverage caused more stress and more hardships for the users, not Sony. People had to close their accounts, call the banks and report the cards stolen, some people spent days watching the news reports to see what the damage really was. That's time they'll never get back. Sure it cost Sony some money, but how much did it cost the everyday person, the banks, online providers, etc etc? They use fear and intimidation to get their point across. That is the very definition of being a terrorist. If these people are talented enough to shut down PSN and do what they did, then they could put that to much better use than swiping some credit cards. Whether you like Sony or not, they produce things. They make peoples lives better through entertainment and technology. Anonymous only produces grief and headache. Siding with Anonymous is very narrow minded. But hey, that's my opinion and that's all I'm gonna say about it. Everyone's gotta make up their own minds

I so hope they attack Sony again. If it means that I take the hit for them to achieve their goal, then I'm happy with that. The end justifies the means.

Do you even know what their goal is? Do you think that what they're doing is going to lead to some magic land of milk and honey? I've said what I think. Can someone please explain this to me in something other than "Fight the power". Maybe I'm missing something

You talk about terrorism like I care I live in the us and want the 90's back where terrorism was a plot in a movie not a excuse for my government taking all my rights away. If annonymous caused me grief it's nothing that bothers me. My grandma supported the Ira so she was a "terrorist" when all she cared about was an free Ireland. I am not 100% sure of this, but anon feel that that the internet is theirs to protect. Any company or individual that wants to stop the growth of sharing knowledge or freedom of speech/information within the global network will be seen as an enemy and will be attacked in a network war. We know that Scientology is one of their targets, because that "religion" suppresses information on what that organization is about. Anon, of course wants to expose their "vault" of data so people can learn more about them, not necessarily good or bad, but just information that has been kept from the public view, I read some megastars pay lots of royalties to get a preview of this information.

More info about them can be found here: Anonymous (group) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I live in the US too and the only way the govt can take your rights away is if you let them. period. You're not wrong about the winners writing the history books, but it hardly applies to these guys. They will never get organized enough to do any real long term damage. I for one don't need some attention seekers pretending to stand up for my rights. I'm sorry they didn't get hugged enough when they were kids. Maybe their daddies drank too much. IDK. This SOPA act will never pass because in the end people won't stand for it. The government works for us not the other way around. They forget that sometimes and have to be reminded from time to time but this is hardly the way to go about it.

For their approval to SOPA, we have also declared that our fury be brought upon the following persons. Justin Bieber. Lady Gaga. Kim Kardashian. and Taylor Swift.
Really???? you expect to be taken seriously going after them???? All they are are pop stars. The thing about them is they will fade into the background without your help. The worse thing you can do to them is to let them taste success and then wait for them to realize their time is up. Take a look at MC Hammer or Vanilla Ice. You guys don't seem to know what you want to do

Anonymous is something that terrifies the powerful companies. It's disorganized and anonymous with no real center of control. Rich and powerful people tend to think of things like a body where severing the head kills the beast. In this case it's more like a slug or biomass were loosing a part won't effect the whole. That's why they tried to make an example out of named hackers. Anon has the advantage that few if any are known.

As for governments taking rights, I'd like to point out that a single snowflake can't stop an avalanche. The laws are made by the rich and powerful for the rich and powerful. This is probably one of the first times in the U.S. when normal people were able to stop the minority rich from making another law that would grant further power to the rich and powerful. What some may call terrorism I call heroism. No one dies, the rich and powerful get a bloody lip and find out what it's like to get screwed rather than do the screwing. The rich and powerful had the chance to lock the internet down when it was first created, but they decided that it wasn't worth their time, that no one would share since they didn't. Now they want to stop it because poor and middle class, nay the majority of the world finally has something that WE control ironically through sharing. We have something that isn't them. The internet will become the corner stone of the future. They don't control it, and that scares them $hitl3ss.

It's less about sticking it to the man and more about taking a stand. It's kind of a first so it's going to look stupid. Standing up alone for what's right usually does.

It was recently reported that Electronic Arts, Nintendo and Sony has pulled out their support for the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).

The House Judiciary Committee’s official list of SOPA supporters does show that these three gaming giants are not on the list anymore but still on the list is the Entertainment Software Association (ESA).

This means that EA, Nintendo, Sony and other gaming companies like Ubisoft and Take Two Interactive still support SOPA through the ESA.

If this bill is ever passed, the Internet community will be silenced and our rights taken away from us.

I see a lot of people saying SOPA will not pass. I'm sorry to say that I strongly disagree. At this point, even with the withdrawn support, it is still one of the most popular pieces of legislation in congress EVER. It is very likely that it will pass, in one form or another. It sucks, truly, but at this point talk will not accomplish anything. We need action. Real, legal, action that will show a united front, not the ramblings of a group that means well but has a sadistically immature way of expressing their sentiments. Also, try not to take every word spoken by an "anonymous" affiliate literally. There is little cohesion, it's hardly a group. There is no monolithic structure, no five guys in a basement plotting the downfall of government. The name is a banner, one that represents the anonymous masses that are so commonly overlooked and under-appreciated that they've decide to stand up and be heard.
