  • JB2USB – A New Clone Of True Blue?!?! Maybe Not???

There has been a warning spreading about this product, that it is not compatible with any of the True Blue v2.5 games.

And the clone wars begin, a while ago a team had released a dongle that would allow users of CFW to play certain PS3 games that required firmware higher than 3.55, calling themselves TrueBlue. The dongle had some competition when JB-King was released and now a new clone has hit the market retailing at $19.99, calling it JB2USB. What is your opinion or take on this device is it yet another clone, or is it the same device with a new look. Have the clone wars started yet again ? You can visit the homepage at www.jb2usb.com

Ok people....I am a rational, old (42) hacker/modder scene dude since before most of you were born. OK....I cut my teeth on Apple2 and C64 and then Amiga before leaving the world of computer gaming and going over to 3D0 and then PSX. So I have been around for a long time.

I am sick and tired of all the true blue hate out there....STFU is all I can say to people who don't want to support it. I get it....its not freee.....boohoo. I dont' work for them but feel the need to promote them as I will now enumurate the good things about TB dongle:

      1. I paid $50 delivered for mine to USA from HK.
      2. Build quality is great...nicest dongle I have ever seen not that it really matters but the thing feels solid
      3. The CFW is great...no problems, went right from KMW to TBv1 and then TBv2 and never had to mess with safe mode or anything. All the hacked PSN stuff installs and works fine and no problems with power on/off and reboot. Its just like KMW.
      4. Other than at Xmas new Eboots come out every week.
      5. Everything I have gotten runs from USB fine (fat32) and even games that were problematic before like Eternal Sonota and HS Golf just seem to work with TB CFW no bd-mirror settings required.
      6. People this is cheap....cheap solution considering it will cost you 1 game.

Ok now for all the stupids who keep saying oh I will buy it when game X becomes available. I am only going to list the fixes for games that are really worth a damned IMO that you can play and you tell me that its a waste or you holding out is worth it.

Those are the ones I can think of that are B grade or better games you could be playing with TB. About 50 patches total have come out now so you could also play other shovel ware and jap titles if you care too.

Also...a few of the best games are on BD only and if you read some of the smack out there they say there is a reason. Which may or may not be true. Eventually we will either see eboot patches for HD or leaked ISO to burn to BDR yourselves (Sniper already leaked as BDR ISO). I am playing from BD

Yes they cost a whopping $10 each and no they won't HD install. I haven't tried to image/copy one but think I will today just to see what happens. So as far as I can tell 2 top games FF13_2 and MGS HD are not fixed. We will likely get MGS games as PSN content at some point and I am sure they are working on FF13_2 as many people want it.

So to the haters of TB STFU and stay on free KMW and don't play anything new. I don't care, and anyone else getting its benefits doesn't care. To those sitting on the fence...I just gave you a lot of ammo for choosing this 3.55+ games solution and I say come on in the TB water is fine. I like everyone else would love a new 4.x CFW that gives us everything we want. I bought Vita and would love to have upcoming ps3/vita features and may buy a clean ps3 to use for remote play of games I care about if they ever support them. In the end it is all a crock of shit and someone is going to make coin off you playing games....learn to love it cause it aint changing any time soon. Oh yeah...I wouldn't buy the knockoffs. The key to this dongle is the team behind it knows how to 'hack' 3.6+ games and no one else has figured that out yet or leaked it. I think those thinking this is just leaked dev eboots are idiots. There are some bits of info out there about what PD is doing and there is apparently some work involved. Their DRM will likely never be cracked as it would be just as hard as any other and who will waste the time when we need people hacking vita/3ds and other new still secure devices.

Rant over....thanks for listening and feel free to flame away...don't care going to check out new TB releases that just came out this morning (syndicate/twisted metal)

Well said sir, I am probably going to go ahead an order my TB dongle this week.

Question: You think it's worth going with original? these clones a waste of money in long run? Thanks

Anyone who supports TB and defends them are.... I shouldn't say the word. They want nothing but to profit off the scene, yet you support them. People try to compare them to modchips, but modchips WERE NEEDED... We do not need dongles.

You guys keep saying how you own your PS3 and you should do what you want from it without Sony trying to stop you... Well... Do you own your TB dongle? What do you think about the kill switch in it which DESTROYS your device from being used if you don't use it however you want? If Sony did you would be in uproar but instead you bow to TB and let them do whatever the **** they want with YOUR device...

You are nothing but little sheep who lets others profit off the scene and tell you what you can't do with your device you paid for... Idiots.

Exactly. I refuse to pay those that profiteer off something that should be free to the community. So my PS3 hasn't been used since 3.70 came out. Not really a huge deal; I have all the PS3 exclusives that are worth playing. The non-exclusive games I just play on my JTAG 360. Those are hard to come by, but the Reset Glitch Hack can be done on any 360 (and fully allows homebrew of any type).

      Blueprint,

For someone who's in their 40's and suppose to be an old school scene'r I find it quite funny your promoting DRM protected exploits. Shit the old school community I'm from loved the challenge and our reward was knowledge and the respect of breaking new ground, we 'keep it free' for the community. Things certainly have changed over the years, I was thinking maybe its cause a lot of us were young back then and now that were adults some are trying to profit from their work but the ones who stayed true to the spirit got actual jobs and this is more of a hobby or sport of sorts and still didn't charge for their accomplishments. Thankfully there are still a lot of us left who keep the true scene spirit alive. Wish a lot of devs would stay away from the darkside even if they do feel a lot of these new generation kids are greedy and unappreciative because there are still tons of us out there who truly appreciate the work being done.

I'm rational as well, and you've also stated you won't be reading this reply. Fair enough - this is for anyone else who gives your same argument then :P

I'm not much younger than you - I grew up with a NES, however, and pretty much stuck with consoles on all sides through now. I've been into console hacking since I owned my SNES and a PSFII backup unit (which needs a new IC, now....). While many people who owned one of those probably only owned it for piracy, I owned it because it both allowed me to play import games, and also any "romhacks" (translations, etc) that I could find. When the SegaCD came out, it was discovered you could burn a copy and play it (unfortunately, there was a big lack of games, and no translation scene anyway), but this really only came in handy for those of us who wanted to play Sonic CD with the original Japanese soundtrack.

Flash forward to around 1995 - the Playstation and Saturn were out, and both were modable. I bought a modchip for my PSX, and built my own switch for my Saturn, and I was in import heaven. There weren't really any emulators or decent homebrew on either platform, so there was still a lack of interest to burn games (other than the Tobal 2 translation, which was well after I had imported it). *note: the Saturn's mod-switch only allowed switching the console's region, and would not allow you to boot any burned discs..

Perhaps if the Saturn had faired a bit better, there would have been a translation effort for some of the great titles which never came over here (such as Shining Force III books 2 & 3), but Sega decided to beat Sony to the shelves and launched the Dreamcast. Once again, we were able to boot from burned discs (with a bit of trickery, this time around) which meant there was once again, a chance for a 'scene' (as we know it) to emerge. As the Dreamcast was a bit more powerful than previous consoles, and simpler than the Saturn's complex design it was perfect for homebrew to actually take off. The best part was it was free. The downside - so was piracy, but at least it was no longer just "piracy vs imports" for modding systems. Once the Xbox got hacked, console hacking and homebrew really became a hobby for many, as piracy wasn't really so much a part of the picture - sure, you could throw a bunch of downloaded games on a hard drive, but you could do that with games you owned, as well as other content to really turn an xbox into an awesome HTPC.

Now, we've seen the focus really shift. In the past, modifying a system for homebrew would never stop you from playing any game you had purchased (with some rare exceptions, which did have solutions). Having a jtagged or rgh'd 360 will give you the same type of functionality as in the past, but on the PS3, it's almost pointless. Why have a modified PS3, when I'll only be able to play homebrew and games that came out before 3.60 fw (yea, SOME are patched for CFW). Even buying a dongle means I have to wait for each particular title, and there's no guarantee there will be one. Any games I own are irrelevant past that point, so I can't enjoy titles I've already paid for because I need to buy another dongle, and hope Paradox or someone will release a patch for me. Meanwhile, my jtagged 360 plays any game out, and that will come out, thanks to dashlaunch. Whatever I buy, and/or will buy, will definitely be playable.

Even if I were to just mod the 360'd DVD firmware, or buy an ODD emulator, I don't have to wait for a patch per-game. Nobody's trying to make money off user's [potential] piracy, or every little thing they want to do.

All that being said, I don't have a problem with dongles like Cobra, or even so much the original JB, as they were a chip that allowed you to mod your system, and enjoy it's capabilities. TrueBlue, however, are releasing the eboots themselves, and therefore they're basically "pirates that accept credit cards". By DRM'ing their dongle, they're not just protecting their work (because let's face it, there's no such thing as copyrights and having the ability to sue a company that steals your code and profits from it), but they're forcing people to buy their dongle to keep their homebrew capable PS3's "useful", as well as denying you the ability to do any eboot hacking yourself, or anything to get your (already purchased) games working without somehow making sure they got a cut.

They have a right to sell their dongle still... they're just dicks about it, I guess :P

That is a damn good game and would be worth the $20 but be cautious of this thing until someone gets their hands on it and opens it up. If it's the same board/chipset inside of it just with a different case then it should be good for all future game patches, but if it's a poorly constructed knock off it will probably be short lived like JB-King or break inside of a week

Ok....so I am promoting them.....still doesn't do much to damage my old school credentials. Look when I started I was obviously a kid and couldn't afford to buy all the software I wanted. Surely that was a motivation to 'hack' things. Easyist copy job ever was my first computer which used cassette tape. You could just throw programs into a dual dubbing deck and dump them to a clean tape. There was an'enthuisiest' down at the local Radio Shack and he collected TRS-80 CoCo games (google it if you don't know) and he had a tape that had like 25 mail order only games on it. Good stuff. I later found you could put a piece of tape on a CoCo cartridge and it would interupt it's autoboot. You could then dump the cart to tape/disc and 'copy' it. Whats the point...that the damned thing had no copy protection and life was great. Fast forward. I agree with you that today we have sort of an arms race going on between HB and the Corps that put out these systems. I have been annoyed to death with the PSP and their 100 firmware releases that didn't add much functionality. Same thing witih PS3. Too many updates to 'secure' a hacked system. To me the PSP would have never been worth squat if it wasn't hacked. UMD sucked, was slow, and battery robbing. You couldn't really enjoy much off UMD. Also opening up the PSX emu was key for me because there were a lot of PS1 RPG classics I just didn't catch back in the day that I played on PSP. So I do get it.

My larger point is that hacking and piracy tend to go hand in hand. The scene is alive and well and has always functioned regardless of the greed and pirates. Most exploits are done for the thrill and fame alone and then someone comes along and makes money from it. Glitch on 360 is no different. The JTAG is a glitch hack, takes about $5 in parts and an old x360 and you are hacked wide open. Now there are all these easy glitch products. The people creating the glitch boards didn't engineer these hacks the open community did, yet they are proffiting plenty. I am not saying you should like it, nor do I particularly. I just am not going to let $50 and a sense of loyalty to the 'scene' keep me from having more functionality. Someone is going to make money and who really cares if it is Sony, Devs, Walmart, or some clever hackers in HK. They all get some of my coin. Piracy is not going to kill gaming and neither is the open scene. Only bad games and bad systems hurt gaming and we don't see as much of that as we used to so how are things getting worse because of the greed? Knowledge is power and at the moment these TB dudes got the power. Pay the piper or don't play. Eventually their secrets will be out, but maybe it is better that they are not. I don't think they have a way to create a new 4.0+ CFW or they could do that and still tie it to a DRM and then they would really be boss and piss people off. I think the longer their stuff isn't cracked and offered freely the more likely Sony won't figure out what they are doing and attempt to secure future eboots against it. Who knows but for now TB is the only way to play newer games and the only way to play them from HD or USB and stay 'unlocked' on 3.55 so you can have all the other great HB stuff like showtime and multiman. If TB and Cobra would join forces then we could have the ultimate 3.55 dongle and more people would buy it. Maybe those companies/teams should consider that.

Frankly, as much as i hate paying for games, dark souls alone is easily worth $20, so even if it doesn't work in the future, it's still money well spent.

I'd like to bow in the dust for Blueprint. Perfect "rant" on why TB is worth it's dullarhs.

I also like how one guy, GhayLeonsX, rants on and oooon about why TB is so cruel, evil, and killed the Jesus baby.
While he, on the other hand, thinks the original JB is a damned holy grail.
He thinks of the original JB as a holy grail, because it was exploitable (He says so himself. He hates TB, because it's unbreakable for dummies who can't figure out how to make one themselves (I want a bigger smiling smiley)) <--- Case and point actually.

The original JB makers weren't foreseeing enough to incorporate DRM into their device. Just ****ing imagine what would've happen then. Maybe ze patches from Sony would've been different (I don't know, I'm no modder/hacker/scener/ePenis-needer - Ino not of ze basics and couldn't care less).

      Anyways:
I don't get why the ranter, GhayLeonsX, has enough money to buy original games, and not a second hand console (Only people without income, or living in a 2nd grade country OR having 10 kids can't afford a SECOND HAND CONSOLE WITHOUT ACCESSORIES!!!).
I'm on ****ing welfare, and I'm getting more than any student (and some have part time crappy jobs) - And I make as much as some of my holmes (well I get their taxes lol).
Also being a stoner has its advantages

Besides that: Referring, theoretically, to bought games as yours in such a sentence, makes ME think you buy original games you can't play (and probably haven't tried out) without even knowing if it'll be possible.
C'mon! Who the hell wants to buy games, they know nothing about, just to play it offline on some crappy CFW!!?!!?

      omg...

Buy cheap ass second hand console without crappy games, without controllers, perhaps only with power and hdmi cord - I got this 5meter hdmi cable with mine :O I was like.. OMG!! Is that coming WITH ME!!? hahah...
I mean, paying 100$ for a used PS3 with that cable cost me LESS when he gave me that cable. That sucker, retail price in an electronics store near me (one of those overpriced ones) is at least 50-100$ it self hahahahahaha.... (I gotta change the lens, but wtf... I don't care).

      anyways..
People REALLY should consider what TB has to offer.

Buy your damned second hand PS3 - Don't buy 2-3 games which you can't even ****ing play on your current 3.55 (omg, seriously, take a picture of yourself, beside your bought game and show the world who's the dummy for buying a game he can't play!!!)

Then you, with TB, you get to try out some of the most spectacular titles on the PS3 - Sure it has short comings, but omg. They are NON-EXISTENT compared to 3.55Kmeaw!!!!!oneoneoneon!!!!

Then you go out and buy the sucker, second hand or platinum, after completing the singleplayer offline.
OR better yet. You decide the game is just so ****ing awesome, you're gonna go get it while its hot and GUESS WHAT! PLAY IT ONLINE ON YOUR LEGIT ****ING PS3!!!!

I mean... I was ****ing waiting to buy/order my TB here, in the following days (when I collect the tax payers money loool)... now I'm more inclined at spending +100$ at getting my PS3 fixed, and playing UFC3 online!!!!

      Oh I forgot to mention:
Paying for a ****ing second hand PS3 without anything with it + buying a ****ing TB comes pretty much close to what a customized xbox would've cost you fools.

Scream all you want, several months has past since you whiners started complaining about it. I bet, the first SUPPORTERS of TB already have had their 60 dollars worth!!!!

You may be surprised but there's no true Scotsman.
If it's not free, it defeats the purpose of the scene. Sure there are ungrateful twats who take and don't show an ounce of gratitude, but this is about being able to run homebrew to your heart's desire, not being able to pirate some newer games here and there. In our pursuits we are supposed to defeat DRM, not enact new DRM that is probably illegal if anyone had the balls to take them to court.
