  • UPDATE: Install Rebug CFW 4.21.1 on possibly any PS3 version [Flasher Required]

UPDATE: PlayStation 3 developers Rogero and Cyberskunk have confirmed that this method does not work on PS3 3K models. I would like to see confirmation regarding PS3's running base firmware >3.56.

Big news coming out of the French scene site ps-addict.fr. As news broke a few days ago regarding the method posted by Spanish devs over at Elotrolado on installing E3's CFW 4.30 on PS3 with Factory OFW 3.56. French PlayStation 3 Developer raymanvtwo has now figured out how to install REBUG REX 4.21.1 on more PS3 version (possibly all ps3 versions) with the use of a HARDWARE FLASHER The news has suggested that this will work on any PS3 model, however at this time period reports have varied from one PS3 to another on 3k models and Super Slim 4k models.

As expected this process comes with some big risk. One of the major risk being it could result in a permanently brick console if the process is not followed correctly or if some unknown problem has not been identified yet. So if you are worried of a perma-brick on your console. I would advise to wait this one out and research your model before attempting this process. This process requires a format of the HDD so one would have to backup any data they want saved.

Reports have suggested this works on the 25xx models, but no clear info yet if possible on 3K models or the new Super Slim 4K model.

WARNING: This will format your HDD and could result in a permanent brick!
PSX-Scene is not responsible for any damage you do to your PS3. Please follow the instructions and beware that there is potentially some unknown risk not known at this time.

    Rough Translation

This method will format the hard drive of your PS3, make sure to recover your important data. Also, you incur a risk of irreversible brick in case of bad handling. Neither I nor PS3-Addict can not be held responsible. If you are not able to follow this tutorial to the letter, thank you spend your way!

Firstly, ensure the validity of your dump, flow rebuilder is the best in the field. Also check that all your fichiez is a different size of 0 bytes (including bootloader_0). If there is a problem, it will help you out.

Now that you have your dump, to see if the offset 200 if you or IFI FI.I with HxD as hexadecimal editor. If you IFI, go to the next step. If you FI.I, open flow rebuilder Select "Byte reverse and extract a NOR dump file." and then made your dump "execute operation". If you get an error is that your dump is not good. Before you dump, you must make new bytes reversed under penalty brick your PS3 but it will be easily retrievable.

Now, you need winskeet and patch (here and here or mirrored here). Winskeet open, go to the tab "patch" in "input file", select your dump file and select the patch. Txt file previously downloaded the archive. Made apply and save your dump patched.

    Code:
    patch1 : OFFSET 0C0010 LEGHT 6FFFE0
    patch2 : OFFSET 7C0010 LEGHT 6FFFE0
    patch3 : OFFSET 80000 LEGHT 20000
    patch4 : OFFSET A0000 LEGHT 20000
    patch5 : OFFSET 40000 LEGHT 20000
    patch6 : OFFSET 60000 leght 20000

Now write your dump patched (do not forget to do it again if you had reversed bytes FI.I at the top). Now your PS3 Decomposition Systems is no longer able to work, do not worry, this is normal. Go to the recovery menu (it may be that your PS3 shuts herself at the first attempt, the second should succeed). Install CFW Rebug 4.21.1 (available via the "system update").

If after several attempts you are unable to install Rebug CFW 4.21.1, format the HDD, then reinstall the switch on the PS3. On a USB drive to FAT32, put the. Rebug 4.21.1 CFW PUP (available here and here) in x: \ PS3 \ update and rename it to PS3UPDAT.PUP. You will get a message asking to connect a controller and press the PS button, then follow the plug your USB drive, make sure there is no disc in the drive BR, then press START and SELECT at the same time for 3s and follow the instructions to install your CFW. Enjoy.

PS: This method has been tested with the Rebug CFW 4.21.1, if you use another CFW, it will be at your own risk. This method has been tested on a PS3 with the metldr "anti CFW 3.55", it should work on any console. Thank you to give me a feedback on the effectiveness of this method and possible problem. Thank you also include PS-addict and I and keep the links given in this tutorial if you publish on your sites this method.

Finally, thank you to the work of the "Three Musketeers" and the Rebug team has allowed me to patch my PS3.

So maybe now I can stop telling people about the downgrading clause about what firmware came with their system.

If this turns out to be true that you can install on any version of the PS3 including the ones with 3.6+ fw, it is huge news for the scene. It means that Sony is almost completely p0wned. All that remains is finding the keys for pup installation and the vsh.self keys for the 4.31 fw. Anything else?

If anyone out there is thinking about downgrading I personally would wait it out another month because it won't be much longer until we will be able to put CFW on almost any PS3 with OFW without a hardware flasher. At least wait until something more stable is released if you already own a hardware flasher. Great job to everyone working so hard in the PS3 scene. I for one am eternally grateful for everything being released. All I can think left to be done is emulating PS2 games.

I disagree with this warning. Go buy a hardware flasher. Just don't buy it thinking its your answer to cfw if you have a model that came with >3.55 and are stuck on newer ofw. A hardware flasher is a good investment though, you never know what cfw what will be just around the corner that you will want to try out -or just around the corner from that. Plus if you brick...

I'm so glad I don't have a flasher anymore because I would have tried this on my 4k, I'll wait for reports before I go get a flasher because there are a couple of things that worry me like the new metldr 1.2(?)

Not possible, Sony have changed the keys for PUP install and they are no longer susceptible to the attack that fail 0verflow used.
However, with hardware flasher you can patch the check and allow install of any PUP so Sony are pwnt still
Any future firmwares can be decrypted by the recent leak of lv1 key so it should always be possible to use a hardware flasher to mod a ps3. After you have flashed you can desolder it and use it again on a different PS3 too =D

are you suppose to install pup from xmb, or do it thru recovery? cause i knew when i shut it off it was gonna panic on boot. i guess i should try installing it from the xmb next on the next attempt

If anyone would like to donate a PS3 Slim with 3.56+ base firmware for experiments with this contact me via email (support@mushymods.com)

I always make 100% clean NOR backups before any writing patching and have a 100% success rate with unbricking.

Anyone who sends me a slim with 3.56+ will have Rebug installed FREE OF CHARGE (minus shipping to me) and this will also help the scene big time.

First come first served on this one!
