  • [UPDATE] Install Package - The PS3 Homebrew App

PSX-Scene developer deroad is back with us today, and has a new PS3 app for everyone here at the site. Enjoy the ability to install package via homebrew app, thanks to this release...

Hi everyone, since i'm working on PSChannel (i don't know when it will be finished), i had to build a few features for it (i will not tell which they are). so i written this simple homebrew to install one or more PKG without using the XMB option. this app is useful if you, for some reason, can't use that option.
it will create on the XMB a new icon that will allow you to install that pkg.

    How to use it:

place in the main directory of your USB a pkg (it can handle up to 100 pkgs, and the max size for each of them is 4GB).
then plug in the usb on the ps3 and run the app.

it will search the usb from /dev_usb000 to /dev_usb009, once found it will start it copy and create the right files to allows you to install it from the XMB without the option.

THIS APP WILL RESTART THE PS3 ONCE FINISHED.

i hope that this app can be useful (maybe also someday).

Direct Download old version (both files)

    [OLD][Download] https://www.dropbox.com/s/qsaczaxuvy...ll_Package.pkg

This new version allow to install packages also from the /dev_hdd0/package folder, just not plug in any USB and it will search in that directory

Well, this app allows you to install signed packages (and unsigned if the ps3 is patched for that) in a way that can be done also on OFW.

Well, i don't know, but let's say that this homebrew comes already installed with a PUP. this can be useful if sony block the install package option.

Not for us OFW 4.21 though is it?
well, if in the future there will be a way to run signed self on new FWs, this can be useful, because it doesn't use any special syscall and doesn't require to patch the OS.

Also you state that it will

Does that mean the pkgs will show like PSN downloads before you install them, (like an icon in a bubble)?
Yes, it will create those bubbles! they are the best way to install packages without the normal xmb option

oh. it doesn't do anything. you can delete it

I just use the feautures of PS3_Extra for installing bunch of pkgs, this way all pkgs are in the right place...
FIRST THING: I'M NOT ALWAYS ONLINE! AND WHEN I READ THE QUESTIONS, I WAS ON MY SMART PHONE. i hate to write long answers from that.

Is'nt Rebug CFW already have this options?
      Rebug :
      -Can install multiple pkg's...
-Can install pkg's from "packages" folder on usb root & hdd0...

      I don't get it!
Why deroad bothered himself to make this?
      Is he got just bored?

      @deroad
If you can implement in to Multiman, that would be awesome
      Good work mate...

What's not to get? A secondary pkg installer is useful in case your CFW gets broken - it does happen. Also if there's no limit to the number of pkg files that can be installed at one time it would be better than any standard pkg installer. There's a limit on the standard installer. I found that out when I had to restore my system I was trying to install over 100 pkg files at once so I could just let it run over night and a lot of them didn't install

When people try to do mods they don't understand things get broken. You'd be surprised

in the beginning stages of XMBM+ if you installed the pkgs in the wrong order *install packages/Package Manager disappeared and the only way to fix at the time was re-installing FW if they had this app it would have saved them

      Deroad,

I just though of something regard your software and those that use a dongle firmware (TB, Cobra, PSKey 3.41, etc) Since your new version only scans the hdd0 is there is no usb detected, does that mean that people on those fw will not be able to use the internal hdd0 part of your homebrew?

I would test but I dont know where my dongle for 3.41 went

Maybe a system prompt on loading the homebrew that would ask hdd0 or USB00* would be more benficial than autodetect
    1. deroad's Avatar
      deroad -
      no.

It scans usb if one is plugged in. If nothing is plugged, it will check if the folder "packages" in /dev_hdd0 exists. If it doesn't,
he homebrew will exit without rebooting the ps3

i never liked Backup Managers, and i'm against piracy, but if deank (not sure if this is the right name of the Multiman dev) wants to copy this code, he will need to ask me it, since the code is close source :P

Backup Managers these days aren't really about piracy for everyone. Only way I can play a legal copy of Dragon's Dogma is by coping it to a USB drive, change the eboot and use a backup manager to run the game. Running from disc won't work.

exactly! plus, some of my older games have dick long loading times cause they didn't use any tricks like install the game or repeat data on disc to make loading faster. when i back it up, it's like heaven only waiting a few seconds (if that) to start playing, e.g. Tony Hawk's Project 8.
I even had a buddy come over once and he noticed how much faster the loading time was.
