  • Hidden Feature DropBox 4.10 PS3

The new PS3 4.10 update that was released a while back, has given rise to a new and a hidden feature of sorts. Sony have decided to add dropbox support with this firmware upgrade making it a welcome addition. However, it is not to be mistaken with the cloud storage that is applicable only to PlayStation plus members. New users get access to around 2 GB of data which can be later expanded to 5 GB through the beta test program. You can sign up for a dropbox account if you don't already have one below.

so, any website that works with the new browser is now considered a hidden feature of ps3? well, we must absolutely post about it.

that post on ps3hax has dropbox referral link in it. that means any user who follows that link and signs up for free dropbox account will extend referrer's dropbox account per 250mb up to 5gb. sneaky.

Why? Dropbox is very useful on my PC but why the hell would anyone want it on their PS3? If anyone can tell me I'd be very interested to know as I can't think of any real reason. (you can't share game saves can you? It's technically illegal to share many TV programs and most films and music...)

Its so you can share your credit card details with friends, and, because its Sony, eventually with the rest of the world.

This COULD be useful, but we'll have to see. If you can upload your gamesave files from your PS3 and download them back to the appropriate folder, that would be great for me, since flash drives don't seem to want to work with my PS3 lol.

EDIT: It just freezes my PS3 solid. I guess I won't be making use of this thing.

Why would you share your creditcard details with friends? I would never do that unless it was a huge emergency, and i surely wouldnt need to use a console or any other electronic device to do that, i'd rather just visit them in person instead.

But if you want to share your creditcard info on Dropbox, why blame Sony if Dropbox get compromised?

@yes159 - I think you completely missed the joke about Sony's total lack of security

      Maybe google "sarcasm"?

I didnt miss the joke and dont need to look up sarcasm The reason why i asked him is because i dont see the relation between the joke and this article, so i wanted to ask about it.

Dropbox is an external service where you can upload and share files over different devices. If you use your PS3, PC, cellphone etc. etc. to upload the files from, Dropbox remains the same. For the creditcard info to get on Dropbox, you have to make a text file with your creditcard info on it and upload it to Dropbox. This is why i asked why he wanted to share his creditcard info with friends like this. For the creditcard info to be in danger to the world, then someone have to compromise your Dropbox account. So in other words, this doesnt have anything to do with Sony's security.

Yeah, it might very well be that i read too much into it indeed, sorry. And i didnt mean to start any big discussion around it or anything like that (this havnt happened, i am just mentioning it). I just wanted to ask where the relation between the joke and this article is, that was all

don't sweat it, we all do it sometimes. The only relation is that this is online storage provided through Sony and Sony's security is known to be lax. I personally wouldn't use it for anything beyond save game storage in case your system fails and you need to recover

I dont think that this solution is provided through Sony, that is the thing Dropbox.com is an external service. I guess you can do a comparisom to i.e Netflix, that eventhough Netflix is supported on the PS3, it isnt a service that Sony offers nor a service that runs through Sony's servers. With Dropbox on the PS3, it is just an addition to the list of devices that Dropbox.com supports. Dropbox is also supported on PC and cellphones (atleast for iPhone and Android).

I havnt tested Dropbox on PS3 myself, but i'd be surprised if it is supports anything else than photos, videos and music. I dont think that savegames or game install data is supported.

I didn't mean it's provided by Sony, just through their network which has many holes that have been exploited. I advise anyone to be cautious as to what they upload to this server - meaning no personal info, no pictures of your girlfriend you don't want anybody else to see, no software that is not 100% legal, etc, etc, etc

this is not a ''hiden feature'' the reason that the ps3 can acces dropbox it bacause the ps3 browser update this has nothing to do with sony

This doesn't go through their network...

And you cannot even upload anything to dropbox from the ps3.

I hear ya, but this just started cuz I was trying to explain a joke about sending credit card info to the whole world. There's a reason you should never do that. Usually means it wasn't that funny to start with. Stupid, stupid, stupid

XMB Manager Plus already downloads PKGs from DropBox through the PS3 to your external HDD to install with CFW, lol no browser needed
