  • GUIDE - Transfer PSX/PS2 Saves to PS3 and Back Again + OSX Support

Thanks to gliitch for putting together this great guide I am sure many PS3 owners will be happy to know about and use. There is no need for Sony's Memory Card Adapter anymore, as it has basically been reverse engineered. Not only that, this new form of transferring saves is actually more beneficial than the old way; because, using the old method when transferring files back to your PS2 or PS1, the saves would become corrupted.

With this guide you wont need the Sony's Memory Card Adapter, also from what ive read, Sony's Memory Card Adapter does convert PS1/PS2 to PS3 save files, but when you want to tranfer them back, they become corrupted. This way, that doesnt happen

This tutorial will be split into 2 parts

    • First part Converting PS1 saves
    • Second Part Converting PS2 saves

    Part one:

    PSX SAVES:

    The things you'll need:

    A hacked PS3
A hacked PS2 (so you can copy your saves onto a USB)
A PC - playing PSX games on an emulator (easiest way to obtain your saves)
(or one thats capable of running homebrew)
FTP Client (FTPZilla) & for the PS3 any FTP client will do i.e.: OpenFTP
    Memcard Rex
    & your PSX saves

The file formats can be MC, MCR & whichever formats you save as
Ok, first go to your PS3 boot into your ftp client navigate to /dev_hdd0/savedata/vmc/
Here you'll see your PSX & PS2 Virtual Memory Cards, copy the file that has the VM1 file extension on the end, to your desktop.
This is the PS One memory card. (keep this in a separate folder on your desktop so you don't get confused later)

Edit the end of the extension and replace it with .MCR (VM1 = .MCR)
Now, open up Memcard Rex > navigate to "File" "Open" & find saves you'd like to inject into your PS3's VMC
Once you've found them, select Edit & scroll down to "Export Save"

Create a folder on the desktop, that has all your saves, call it PSX Save Files.
For each save you export, it will create a "mcs" file (Single PSX save) keep doing this until all the saves you want are in the folder.

Now, load up Memcard Rex again & go to the folder which has your PS3 VM1 file in it, it maybe empty but thats ok.
    Go to Edit > Import.
Now its time to inject all the saves into this file. Once this is done, save it. Memrex will ask you if you want to save it again, click Yes.

On the desktop go to the folder with your newly edited save and rename the extension back to VM1.
Finally load up FTP on your PC & PS3, navigate to /dev_hdd0/savedata /vmc & then replace the existing VM1 file with the newly created one.

The files will appear as though they are invisible
Load up a game PS1 PSN game, quit then head over to the PS1/PS2 Save Utility they will then appear as if it was always there the save will appear in the [PS1/PS2] Saves Category.

*When the saves are exported to a USB the PS3 converts them to .PSV files which adds a signature to the file, so theres no way of decrypting it yet, but with this method theres no need to *

    Part 2

    PS2 SAVES:
    Items you will need

mymc - PS2 Memory Card Utility
    Your PS2 Save files
    Hacked PS3
    FileZilla
    PS3 FTP Client

Copy the VM2 file to your desktop which is located in /dev_hdd0/savedata/vmc/Internal Memory Card.VM2
Rename the extension to .ps2, open up mymc. Navigate to your memory card which should be on your desktop.
Here you'll have a list of save files, you can export these to the desktop, & edit them, then inject them back into the card.

Alternatively, you can take a download PS2 save & inject it into the card, by highlighting export.
Once you've done this its time to rename the .PS2 file to VM2
Copy it back to the PS3

The save issue is the same as the PSX Saves, you will just need to boot into any PSX/PS2 game & exit, your saves will then be displayed.

    SIDENOTES
This is an updated version of porting your ps2 saves into the ps3, which required Swap Magic to do so before hand, now i have removed that need.
Make sure your save is of the correct region, as it will not work.
Ive now made this tutorial compatible with Mac OSX, you'll need to install Wine Bottler - its a little buggy but it does the job.
I have personally tested the following programs - PS2 Save Converter, mymc & PSXG 160 confirmed to be working. Memcard Rex does not work with this method.
    Enjoy

Yes it is possible it become a corrupted, not only the fake cards.
I was transfered my ps2 save files on usb drive for make a backup.
When I transfer back to other memory card or same MC, it become corrupted.
And it corrupted my MC's file system.
My only chance is having a format mc program...

lol this post is a bit funny ...

A few months ago we had something called "PS3MCA" which allows you to read PS2 memory cards straight from a PC without need a PS2 or PS3.

It was announced on this very site and was developed by members of the PS2 forum ...

And by any means THAT was the only REAL reverse engineering.

Not this where you use the PS3 to unlock the PS2 memory card and transfer the data using FTP...

The purpose of this is to do it without the memory card adapter. The title is just a lie.

No, PS2 HD collections are essentially PS2 games being ported over to the PS3, so they act like a PS3 game. They use PS3 savegames.

The save file is probably essentially the same, with a different format. It may be possible to do, but if so, i don't think anyone has even looked into doing so.

It's not a lie... If you read closely he is saying he just made a 'GUIDE' for it, which is true...
He didn't say anything about him reverse-engineering it, or him making the program. He is just explaining how to do it with the ps1/2 savegames.

Thanks for the guide btw I also used to have problems with corrupted save files, especially with the fake memory cards (which sometimes would completely wipe my card clean empty -,-) but after a long time too with the sony memory cards.

If anything, that would indicate it's a guide to reverse engineering it.

This guide has absolutely nothing to do with the memory card adapter, and no reverse engineering has been done.

Exactly Like I said the device was reversed ages ago. Its a nice guide that eliminates the need for the device for jailbreakers but it wasn't a reverse engineering feat.

It was the "magic gate" security in memory cards what was "reverse engineered" years ago, not the format of the card

The format of the card was dumped much more years ago (because with a hacked ps2 you have full access to the card)... later there was several program able to make a dump of the card (an exact 1:1 raw copy of his contents, block by block)

The structure of this "raw" dumps was documented again lot of years ago
I habe been editing the "Game Saves" page in ps3devwiki months ago adding all this info and a lot more
Revision history of "Game Saves" - PS3 Development Wiki

The manual gliith made can be resumed with this:
      .VM1 = .MCR (both are a "raw" copy 1:1 of a PS1 memory card)
      .VM2 = .PS2 (both are a "raw" copy 1:1 of a PS2 memory card)

There are a lot more file formats supported for the ps3 (used when you export to PSP... or USB.. etc...)

.VM1 was discussed moths before (i found several manuals in several forums, most copyed)... i added a "very resumed" manual of this conversion the day 15 May 2012‎ (with a source link of course... i had more links that was variations of the same manual but i choosed this one because was the most completed and the most newer)
Game Saves - PS3 Development Wiki

With .VM2 i spent lot of days looking at the file structure, comparing with other cards (i was trying to find a PS3 identifyer, but there was none)
All this time i spent taking notes, and building this table
Game Saves - PS3 Development Wiki
*there are links to the source documentation, or course
I didnt added a manual for .VM2 conversion, but i added this note at 30 April 2012
Game Saves - PS3 Development Wiki
      Code:
      ====Virtual Memory Card PS2 (.VM2)====
File structure is the same than a "original PS2 memory card", there are not apparent differences
Finally, i must add that i was talking with gliitch 2 or 3 days before his manual, and i was helping him in a irc publically and privately, explaining things and giving him links (and at the same time i was playing with ps1 animated icons to document them in wiki)
I advised the method with .VM1 was discovered before, and that no reversing engineering was needed for this, and i explained him that .VM2 works in the same way

      --------------------------------

In resume... take a read at this page at ps3devwiki, all is there (and the sections that was copyed has source links), there are other formats not documented yet, so feel free to help
