  • Graf_Chokolo Installs Gentoo/Linux on Internal HDD of PS3 Slim

    Slim PS3 owners can now rejoice! Graf_Chokolo has successfully installed Gentoo Linux on the internal HDD of his slim PS3. He managed to accomplish this by increasing the PS3's virtual FLASH region from 256MB to 40GB. He then installed Gentoo to this area, a location which GameOS does not touch. Users can format their PS3's hard drive and the Linux installation will still remain intact.


    Great news, guys I was very busy in the last days and i managed to install Gentoo on the internal HDD of PS3 Slim
    I created a new VFLASH region of size 40GB and installing my Linux kernel there right now And GameOS doesn’t touch this region when i boot it So you can reformat your HDD (but not VFLASH) and Linux will be still there I resized VFLASH from 256MB to about 40GB

    Next steps:
    * Compiling petitboot for PS3
    * Installing petitboot on VFLASH
    * Creating HV CFW which is capable of booting GameOS or petitboot. petitboot can boot Linux (or other OS) from HDD, FLASH, USB, CDROM or NFS (just like 3.15 did it or me on my PS3 3.41)
    * Creating a more user-friendly approach for installing Linux on internal HDD

    BTW, check out my new ps3stor-utils and Linux device driver ps3stormgr. It allows you to create/delete storage regions on PS3 Linux I used it to create a new VFLASH region for Linux.

    Here are my Linux partitions on VFLASH:

    brw-rw—- 1 root disk 253, 112 Mar 25 19:19 /dev/ps3vflashh
    brw-rw—- 1 root disk 253, 113 Mar 25 19:19 /dev/ps3vflashh1
    brw-rw—- 1 root disk 253, 114 Mar 25 19:21 /dev/ps3vflashh2
    brw-rw—- 1 root disk 253, 115 Mar 25 19:23 /dev/ps3vflashh3

    OtherOS++ will be back and even better than my 3.41 version

    HV rules !!!

      Hopefully they can make something similar to petitboot so a ps3 can load up 2 firmwares

      whats the advantage to having two FW's i cant wait till this gets on a PHAT :] in the info section it said you have to format your HD or its optional? thanks this is great news cant wait to have ice on PS3.

      I think it would be great to just be able to use a separate firmware. For instance, I would like to be able to boot into 3.60 when I want online and be able to go back to 3.55CFW when I want my homebrew.

      ok i see that would be pretty sweet. thanks. you think there would be any draw backs to it like stressing the PS3 out hardware wise or shorten the life span?

      Thank you. and this is probably possible I bet graf could do it quicker because firmware is already made for ps3....linux must be ported

      Thanks for the leaps and bounds Graf. It shows that you truly do have passion for your work. Great news!!! I cannot wait until I see my cube desktop on the PS3. When I do, I will most likely sh|t my pants. The bash command line will be alright too I guess...

      So with this would it be possible to Flash the VFlash with a a different firmware so you could switch between CFW and OFW? Sorry, I'm not familiar with this stuff, I read the article but I didn't fully understand it (:

      People really need to get reading skills, somebody mentions 2 firmwares and we already got excited people that think they will be able to switch from CFW to OFW LOL.

      If graf can make this happen(if at all), u would be able to choose from GameOS(CFW) or... petitboot(Linux/OtherOS)


      Some people really show how ungrateful they are to this person, he is doing his best on getting Linux to work but all these people care about is having 2 firmwares(wich is nowhere mentioned lmao) and getting PSN back via 3.60 OFW...

      I agree with Turkish on this one. I don't see why tariq786 posts that comment as a response to Turkish's post in this thread.

      I am excited about graf_chokolo's progress and I am following it closely on his blog.
      I actually decided for the PS3 while it was jailbreakable (at that time 3.42 wasn't broken) because I hoped that hacking would provide linux or other optimised media playback support.
      When graf is done, my PS3 can finally become the media server it is supposed to be :-)

      Yeah, this place is lacking moderation, thats why stuff like this happens. This Turkish hating infection is spreading like a virus. Banning all those Turkish haters could remedy the situation imo. When they see they can get banned for flamming Turkish maybe they will realise who is the bad guys after that.
