Graf_Chokolo Delivers on his Promise - Publishes Petitboot Tools for Linux

The other day we reported on graf_chokolo's success with installing Gentoo Linux on to his internal hard drive of his PS3 Slim. He accomplished this by resizing the VFLASH (virtual flash) of his PS3 and installing the kernel there. Today, graf_chokolo has released petitboot for the PS3 as well as updated tools to allow dual booting of Gentoo Linux and GameOS. If you plan on following graf_chokolo's directions please not this is for advanced users. If you are not very technically skilled please wait as a dual-boot custom firmware is coming soon.

New Additions and fixed for “utils Storage device” used to manage the partitions of the PS3 hard d rive:

Added commands set_acl and get_acl
Added descriptions for set_acl and get_acl commands
Fixed ps3stor_mgr_get_region_acl

Usage:

ps3stor_region [OPTIONS] DEVICE COMMAND [ARGS]

Options:

-H, – help: Show this message and exit
-V, – verbose: Increase verbosity
-V, – version: Show version information and exit

Commands:

create DEVID START COUNT LAID : Creates storage region
delete DEVID REGIONID : Deletes storage region
set_acl DEVID REGIONID LAID RIGHTS : Sets region access rights
get_acl DEVID REGIONID INDEX : Returns region access rights

Example of creating a hard drive partition:

ps3stor_region / create dev/ps3stormgr 0×1000 0×1070000002000001 0×8 3

The “PS3 hvcall tools” mentioned in the list above is used for handling kernel panics–restarts the console after a kernel panic.

Usage for PS3 hvcall:

ps3hvc_hvcall [OPTIONS] DEVICE COMMAND [ARGS]

Options for PS3 hvcall:

-H, – help: Show this message and exit
-V, – verbose: Increase verbosity
-V, – version: Show version information and exit

Command for PS3 hvcall:

panic ARG1

Example for PS3 hvcall:

ps3hvc_hvcall / dev/ps3hvc 1

Does the dual-boot custom firmware mean that we will be able to choose between running 3.55 KMEAW and 3.60, or will it only be limited to being able to choose between linux and a GameOS firmware, like 3.55 or 3.60?

Obviously, you'll need 3.55 already to install the dual boot cfw

Hopefully this comes to fat ps3's .... I'm probably going to buy a slim one so i could upgrade my old one to OFW but im still not to sure.

I get what you're getting at, but no where in this was mention of dual boot CFW. Rumors start just from statements like that, like the one below:

It's not dual CFW, it's CFW and Linux. There's no telling if it is or even would be possible, but anyone can hope for dual CFW. My thoughts are chances are if something like that was possible or becomes possible, it would be a choice between CFW and OFW or CFW and Linux.

Even though I know some technical things, just to play it safe, a PUP with this for easy installation is the likely solution just to rule out as many errors as possible (CFW and Linux that is.)

No where in that article did it mention dual booting custom firmware.

Today, graf_chokolo has released petitboot for the PS3 as well as updated tools to allow dual booting of Gentoo Linux and GameOS.

Check out after the break–at the very bottom–for complete instructions on how to compile petitboot. Also, a hypervisor custom firmware with the capability to dual-boot GameOS and petitboot (for Linux) is coming.

GameOS is the XMB and Gentoo Linux is an operating system. If you want to consider it a firmware, that's fine...but that's not what it is.

Sure... you will need a dual boot enabled cfw to be able to achieve this dual boot procedure between linux and gameos. But what he meant is that it does not mention anything about what alot of peoples tends to believe: dual boot cfw to another cfw or ofw ect... Just dual boot between GameOS and Linux thats all the article talks about. Now, its normal that we all want to see the dual boot between cfw and cfw or cfw and ofw... But from reading the whole article its not mentionning anything about that just yet.

So does this mean we can finally install linux version of xbmc ?
or full driver support still not done yet. i'll be happy the day when that happens.
