PSX-SCENE Forum Discussion for Sony PlayStation/PsOne/PS2/PS3/PSP/PS VITA
  • Gitbrew releases PS3 RSX Documentation

Yesterday, the developers of Gitbrew announced they would release RSX Documentation for the PlayStation 3 if they received enough donations within 24 hours. Well, the people came through and achieved this goal, and thanks to them, we can all enjoy the benefits of having RSX documentation at our finger tips.

The heart of the Playstation 3 is made up of two processors: the CPU (Cell Broadband Engine), and the GPU (RSX Reality Synthesizer). With this documentation, homebrew is no longer restricted to the CELL Broadband Engine and it's various SPUs. Now authors and developers on the scene can use this information to bring about new and updated works, such as emulators and homebrew games.

In graphic sense, would a PS3 be around the some "looks" as a mid ranged gaming PC?

      Maybe we'll finally see a PS2 emulator...Or not. I don't know.

This could mean better media players and so on. I myself was playing with a 400+ Euro Zotac ZBOX this weekend and I didn't get a satisfactory MKV 1080p support before I enabled hardware accelaration in the GPU. This zotac is so similar to the PS3, slotin Blu Ray and everything but the CPU had only 2 cores and only 1600 MHz, about half the speed of the PS3 but I need to have an anoying operative system like win 7 to get all the drivers. Didn't even get 720p while I tried XBMC with a simple Linux core from a DVD and later from an USB 2 Stick. It really feels like the GPU does more work then the CPU in the Zotac when playing MKV files. I think this will make a big difference when watching 1080p on the PS3...

Forget about that. It's not going to happen. Sony couldn't even get a good 100% software emulator for PS2 working. Even the best PC emulators for PS2 require an expensive gaming computer to run at a decent framerate and they still have loads of issues and low compatiblity.

Get a PS2 or buy a BC compatible PS3 from another person if it's important, because that is really your only choices.

We'll be lucky if we see good advances on N64 emulation.

You mean graphics wise? No. It's almost 6 year old technology at this point, which, in PC terms, is a lifetime.

They needed $300 to by a ps3 to do testing on a new exploit that will allow us to play new games. They are doing the hard work. We can at least pitch in to supply the equipment.

I'm with you. They are practically selling this stuff. Reminds me of the "Media Cabinet-gate", but less explicit.

They have every right to sell it, so not sure what the problem is. Do you work for free? If not, then WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU? WHY WOULD YOU DO SOMETHING FOR MONEY WHEN YOU COULD BE DOING IT FOR FREE? YOU ARE A DISGRACE TO WHATEVER INDUSTRY YOU WORK IN!

And that's why the feds, sony and anybody else with an investment in the console are coming for YOU.
You do it because you can,not for money.
If you want to make money go invent something new not rip-off somebody else.
Reverse engineering is not invention or creation it's reverse engineering.
Get a job with sony if you want to make money of this.

Since when is reverse engineering not a legitimate career path?

They are not trying to make money. They needed a new 3000 model to test a new exploit they have been working hard on.

Are you both rights. Reverse engineering is the only way to make the whell keep on turning. This new feature (rsx domain) would let us to serious homebrews like dreamcast emulator, and why not PS2 !!!! I am U18 4 this !

so were the devs designing the emulators not able to use the gpu at all before? or they could but just not that effectivly?and is this official or was it dscovered?i just hope that this helps to advance the emulator scene , i would like to finally see a n64 emulator but ,hopefully the devs wont be too pig headed or proud to use it,like the ones working on the n64 emulator that refuse to use the official sdk ,i mean they could just do 2 branches of their project, 1 that uses the sdk ,and works, and one that uses pslight and whatever happened to the rumored dolphin port? i hope this will be able to that a realtiy that and a dreamcast emulatorthis is really great news
also i hope this will bring rsx support in linux ,but i doubt it , i would love to have the cube desktop and compiz effects in ubuntu working on a ps3

Don't you think that talking about "ones right to be paid for his work" in a forum full of "can I play Portal 2 on my hacked PS3? Don't want to go to OFW right now since I like the homebrew... " is a bit contradicting?
