  • Geohot Closes First Round of Donations - Legal Fees Covered

The other day, we reported on geohot's request to the community to help his legal cause with donations. With the help of some of our very own members, along with many other generous people, geohot has received the amount of donations he was hoping for. He has temporarily closed donations for the time being, as his legal bills are covered for now. In his public statement on Geohot.com, he states "Expect to see a few more lawyers on my responses!" It's refreshing to see that his legal battle is starting to become more of a fair fight, all thanks to the community's generous donations.
First round of donations is closed
Thank you so so much for all of your help, things are looking up money wise. Expect to see a few more lawyers on my responses!
I have enough to cover my legal fees for the time being, and in the absolute worst case scenario, we don't want Sony getting it :-P

For now, the best thing you can do is spread the word
Let people know how Sony treats customers
Let people know Sony would rather sue than be proactive and try to fix the problem
Let people know about laws like the DMCA which stifle innovation, and don't do anything to fix the problems they were created to solve

If pirates won't pay for games, why would they pay for his legal fees?

this is actually good news for Sony and their lawyers. Him reaching out to the community for support shows that he is running out of money to pay for his legal team.

Even hackers and pirates won't help him for long. Pirates don't want to pay for anything. All Sony has to do is wait it out for a little while longer and he'll exhaust all of his resources.

Why does everyone seem to think that this is all about piracy. Its not. I have my system modded and own every game that is on my hard drive. The fact that he has closed the doors on donations shows that people that mod their systems do not mind paying for things.

I personally think the fact that geohot closed the donations after he received enough support, demonstrates he has upstanding character. He could have just left the donations open forever, but he only took what he needed. He's a decent guy and if people are willing to donate, that's their own choice. If you don't want to donate, no one's forcing you to.

the purpose of jailbreaks and backup managers is to keep your games on a hard drive and run them off a hard drive, it saves your expensive bluray discs and surely saves your bluray drive which it does not last very long...ask sony??? sony wants to charge you $200 to fix a bluray drive which they made faulty in the first place!

You're right. Pirates don't want to pay for anything. Thankfully, pirates aren't the people who donated money to cover his legal fees. Those people were members of the hacking and homebrew community, people who believe that they have the right to do whatever they want with hardware they legally paid for.

Also, the fact that the community raised over $10,000 to cover his legal fees in less than a week...I think that shows just how far people are willing to go in order to fight for what they think is right. The fact that Geohot stopped taking donations means that he's got more than enough money, and the community is ready to reinforce him should he need any more.

Piracy? Yeah, that's wrong. No doubt about it. But when a man can't modify his property any way he sees fit, then things have to change.

Just think, what if people weren't allowed to make their own custom computers? What if you weren't allowed to buy and install an extra hard drive or video card?

I wish people wouldn’t assume everyone is a pirate or for piracy. This suit isn’t for piracy, it for console rights. I donated and I don’t own a PS3, but the day if I ever decide to I would like to do to it as I please. Why should I spend hundreds of dollars on a system, and still technically not own it. That doesn’t make any since. It’s like Microsoft banning people and crippling the 360 for hacking it, yet you paid all that money for it. I hoping for a win from Geohot and giving us the right to do with our systems as we please.

Obviously you realize he's fighting for our freedom as a consumer. What if your new car decided to drive itself back to the factory becuase Toyota wanted it to? Crap like that is at stake for real.
