General PS3 Questions and Answers
Note: Currently, you will need a PS3 Console with v3.55 or less to Jailbreak. If your PS3 is v3.56+, then you will need to make sure that it is downgradable to v3.55, and then heavily modify the console in order to get it ready to Jailbreak.
Why would I do it?
Backups, Homebrew, OtherOS++, QA Flag
What do I gain?
Experience, knowledge, reward of self satisfaction. Also the ability to play/design wonderfully developed programs from great authors.
What do I lose?
Time, money, and sleep. Seriously though, access to PSN, and the ability to play certain newer games is lost. There are breakthroughs from time to time that allow access to these lost features. If you are not patient then consider purchasing a separate PS3. One for Homebrew, one for Online and New Releases
Can I ruin my PS3?
Depending on the task, you either have a chance of seriously wrecking your system, or about as much of a chance of an official Sony update bricking your console. For the most part, you have nothing to worry about. Just take your time, and do your research, and everything should turn out okay.
Can I still use the PSN?
Depending on when you have joined the scene, you may or may not have seen this option available with jailbreak, and cfw. Currently, the answer is NO.
Do my games still work?
Most games work, with the exception of newer releases forcing you to update to OFW before allowing you to play. Sometimes there is a work around for certain games to get them to work, for example, fixing a few files. Sometimes you need a disc in order to play the backup, and sometimes you do not. Some backups do not play at all. There are several lists here at PSX-SCENE that will give you an idea of which games work, and which ones you will need to find/wait-for a fix.

There is plenty to do, from learning how to compile your own packages and FireWares, to designing you own programs, or just sitting back and enjoying the benefits the 'scene' has to offer.
