  • Exclusive - PS3 User Cheat Device Review

I received a PS3 User Cheat Dongle for review the other day, to share my experience with it here. For anyone unfamiliar with the cheating device which has been marketed recently, it is a dongle made by the PS3 Break team which allows you to cheat on your games in a very "gameshark" manner. Basically, unlimited money, health, mana, and whatever else you want can be achieved with one little dongle.

First, the unraveling. The packaging was very unimpressive, but it doesn't really matter as long as it does the job. It was properly protected from the hazards of the shipping company though.

The product itself was in a nice little plastic box, nice and safe from any hazards. I was a little surprised at how large the USB dongle is. I was expecting something just a little bit smaller. Its made so that if you put it in the far left USB port, it doesn't block the others. It also has a MicroSD card slot, so it will accept additional storage

Here's a feature which the PS3 Break team previously used on their dongles, it has a "truth sticker." Basically, its serialized, and you can go online to their website and verify that it came from them and its not a knock off.

Now, this dongle only works with 3.41 firmware (Update: the device now supports 3.55 firmware), so I was stuck downgrading. Luckily, I have a phat, so it wasn't much of an issue. I just backed up my DRL files so I didn't lose blu-ray playback and went on with it. I read the directions on their website for downgrading, and it was the same thing as what was posted everywhere a while back. So I plugged it into my computer, and was shocked to see...

VERY ANNOYING, but not function threatening. Most of my USBs said the same thing after moving from XP to Vista and then to Win 7. The downgrade process was definitely easier than I was expecting. Their website said that dangles being used on phats needed a different file on the dongle, so I downloaded off their website, placed it on the USB, and plugged it back into my computer, as per the directions on their website. As it initiated the USB dongle, it grabbed the update file, updated itself, and deleted the leftover file, very convenient. Next, I downloaded the downgrade.bin file from their website as well. Once that was on the dongle, and I pressed power then eject buttons, my PS3 was in service mode. From there, I just placed the 1st lv2diag file and the 3.41 pup from their website on my regular USB, booted the PS3, and went for a drink. When I came back from my grape soda, my PS3 was on 3.41. I loaded the second lv2diag on my USB drive and booted my PS3 again and it was in standard mode. As I went through setup, I was shocked to find out that I DIDN'T LOSE ANY INFORMATION!!! All my game saves, backups, and profiles were there. I had to re-select my theme, but that was it. Wish I hadn't deleted all my homebrew and most of my game data before downgrading (made the backup faster), lol. So, once I was on 3.41 and set up, I just deleted the downgrade.bin file from the dongle and it was back to play mode. I booted with dongle, went to the app_game folder on the xmb, and saw...

VERY good sign, it fired up and worked on the first try, wish my iPhone would have done that when I was using it as a jailbreak dongle. Well, seeing that, of course I clicked it just to see what options were in it...

Well, I was disappointed with the list of games, so I went to their website and read there was an update. I downloaded it, plugged the drive into my computer, and updated 1 file. Couldn't have been easier. Plugged in back into my PS3, and it FROZE!!!

Apparently, this dongle doesn't like being powered up without a job to do. Well, that was an annoyance. I rebooted the PS3, and couldn't get it go back into jailbreak mode. After about 3 or 4 times, finally I realized I'd left an external hard drive in the USB slot, and even though it wasn't in the primary slot, it was causing the jailbreak to fail. Well, hey, my mistake. I hadn't used the dongle method in awhile, so opps, lol. Well, at least I was back up and running.

Going back into the PS3 User Cheat menu, I was pleased to see a larger list of games and cheats. It's nice to know that they can include more cheats as easily as updating a single text file.

Still a lot of Asian stuff in there, but I guess that's cause its a worldwide product. At least it was organized better this time. Well, I saw Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 in there, and the video on their own website showed GOW3, so I'll give that a go...

I had forgotten their was a "money" system in Ninja Gaiden, but max health and magic is NICE. So I fired up the game, went the normal process of installing it, and started up a new game. After all the cut scenes and filler, finally! Game play! Now, I had thought max health meant the bar would be at the max level it would be at after collecting all the stuff that increases your life. I was happy to see that it refills the health automatically. That means that the PS3 User Cheat application is running in the background, modifying the values in memory as the change. I was NOT expecting that. How they have an application running behind a game is something for the skilled dev's to figure out, but hey, maybe that's why it's only on 3.41 (Update: it now works on 3.55). So anyways, on to the photos...

Now before anyone says I suck at Ninja Gaiden (cause I don't, lol), I was standing there just getting beat up, and thrown, and exploded, all while my health bar only flickered and went back to full!!! So I fought through the masses until I could finally use magic (had to test that too), and I'll let the photos speak....

As you can see, even actively casting, the available magic refills almost instantly, even before the spell is over. Impressive... No more running out right when you need it... Well, time to play through until a point in the game when I could shop and try out the money aspect of the cheat....

Even after buying everything I could, and even upgrading a weapon, my "money" refilled by exiting the shop and then re-entering. Pretty nice, now if only Muramasa could upgrade more than 1 at a time...

Well, all in all I was very happy with it. I got sucked into Ninja Gaiden again, and thoroughly ticked off my wife, but hey, that's what Playstations are for right? It only does everything, lol.

Overall, the PS3 User Cheat dongle works as advertised, and spoils any game it supports just right, lol.

Good thing I'm not a CFW dev. If I was, I'd make something totally awesome and block the use of dongles forever...

I just hate those things, the sellers are such scammers... And Where the *** is Sony now? they're using their stuff for this and MAKING MONEY out of it BY SCAMMING, but oh sure.... Sue those evil Linux nerds. (well... geo you piss off.)

Well, here's the thing. It has a payload on it that's not visible, permanently re-routes the app_home folder to the eboot on the dongle, which is not able to run by itself at all, so IDK how a port could be accomplished. I know that the payload on it uses memory addresses to hex edit the values in real time, same as all cheat devices have worked for ages. I also think those memory addresses could be different in 3.55. AND, I also know that most devs would never work on porting something like this because cheating is heavily frowned upon, even by me. The device works great, and I'll be unbiased in a review, but I like a challenge and this dongle, of course, takes it away.

No the application does not running in the background.

It does nothing else than patch a ram adress to another value.

And all the cheats are from the CMP Forum. Itīs nothing else as the Ram equavilent of the cheats from CMP.

Burden of proof is on you, otherwise we don't have to do ****. I'll wait for a free alternative, I'm not buying anything more for my PS3. Not from Sony, not from anyone.

The list of games it has is rediculous:

"I was pleased to see a larger list of games and cheats"

Based on the link above this comment it total BS. From the initial release they only added a handful of games. Yes, technically larger but by almost nothing.

I would think it would need to run in the background to keep those cheats active after the values would be changed in the game. I'm getting this idea because of the hex modifications you could do with zsnes or similar cheat software for any game. I've only used em on the PC but I would think the logistics of hex editing ram would be the same. If you modify the memory address just once, it will peak your health for example but you would still take damage. This cheat dongle locks in those values for the duration of game play, so something is keeping the values from changing.

They added a half dozen games in a week. Give em some time they'll have a larger library. Here, how about "I was pleased to see a larger list of games in such a short time period from initial launch", happy?
