  • Dos Port For PS3 Released - Tempest 2000

Playstation developer Samson has released a port of the classic game Tempest 2000. Tempest is a tube shooter with a fixed environment viewed from a three-dimensional perspective. The object of Tempest is to survive as long as possible while scoring as many points as possible by clearing the screen of enemies that have landed on the playing field.

One of our dedicated developers samson, has released a dos port of Tempest 2000 for the PS3, here is a quote from his thread:
A member ps3hax mappy123 requested a port of the classic Tempest 2000, i figured yeah what the hell.. started working on the dos version last night and was very pleased with how well it runs on the ps3 using dosbox, so i decided as it was a retro gem to give it some nice xmb wallpaper and music..

press r3 at start up for joystick, exit via ps button.

credit go’s to the atari game dev’s and robo hobo for porting dosbox, and gliitch for helping me with the xmb music. and last but not least mappy123 for the idea

enjoy and be kind with your comments , its my first game port and its also been made in a day.

Thank you for porting these classic games to the PS3. I have an extensive collection of DOS, and early Windows games. I'd love to help convert these to a playable format on the ps3 but can't find a good guide on how to do so. Could you post the steps that you take so I can work on putting out some classic conversions too?

From the above article, it sounds like (by which I mean I'm guessing) the majority of this undertaking was in creating icons/etc. for the PS3's menu screens, and that the "game" itself runs a copy of the freeware DOSBox program with the Quick Start function to automatically mount the emulated files, and then runs the game executable (from dosbox.conf).

Now I know that samson may not see this comment as he may not frequent this site, but at least it will have been said... Is this really a good idea? Distributing commercial/"abandonware" games may not attract the kind of attention this scene is seeking. I'm not saying people shouldn't do what they want, but ffs, at least make them use their own copies / download the games/roms/whatever for themselves. A good example of this is ScummVM. You can play any game you want, but they don't supply them to you (with the exception of the freeware ones). samson has "credited" the developers, but that's not going to pay their bills, and just because someone says "Hey, props to Microsoft, this Veesta awss is da bomb!" (sorry, sarcastic example) doesn't mean they aren't going to try and sue them for giving away keygen'D license keys. I imagine that Atari still owns the rights to this, as they definately still own the original Tempest (which they currently sell on XBox Live and GfW Marketplace, as well as a compliation for NDS, etc. etc.) Anyway, hopefully he/she can take this as constructive criticism - how about writing an app that automates the creation of a DOS game package, or a tutorial on how to do so as BahumatLord suggested?

I have to admit that I agree with you about distributing prepackaged copyright materials. Granted, most of it is abandonware, but it's hard to really tell 100% whether it is legal to distribute or not. And I'm not getting preachy, I have been known to watch a bootleg movie or play a bootleg game. And don't even look at my iPod. Mainly I want to make ports for my own system so i can get rid of the couple thousand discs that I have in my closet (I have been a gamer since 1985). And no, they are not bootlegged copies, they were obtained from flea markets and yard sales, usually no more than 50 cents or a dollar a piece. What I was thinking of doing was that if it was easy enough, like you said, that it is just a matter of configuring dosbox and throwing in an XMB icon and background, that i would go ahead and start making packages for my system that only install the core files needed for the PS3. You would have to manually copy or ftp the files from the actual game itself to your hard drive on your own to bypass any legal issues. Believe me that once the police or the district attorney get involved in your life, it takes a long time and a lot of money to get rid of them. I don't take any kind of chances anymore. I wouldn't mind distributing the PS3 only packages if there's enough interest in them. I was planning on starting with the ID software collection (Wolf3d, Doom series, Heretic series, Hexen.... etc, etc), the Command & Conquer series (probably only the original dos versions), and anything else that was fun and addictive. Let me know if it sounds good to you guys and I'll start posting them as I get them running
