  • DoPSBox 0.74-PS3-R1 Emulator Released

Today, Robo Hobo, known for his work on the Mednafen emulator, released the first version of his DOSbox port, which he calls DoPSBox. DOSBox supports many old PC titles from the 80's to late 90's, such as the Duke Nukem and Doom series, Quake, Warcraft and more.

    DOSBox-0.74-ps3-r1

    Issues:
There are still some performance bottlenecks. In testing cycle values above 10000 provided the most issues. Tweaking some values in dosbox-0.74.conf may help to improve performance.
There are still some usability issues with the on screen keyboard. If a lot of typing is necessary you may consider hooking up a physical one.
Using the fluidsynth midi synth requires a soundfont is sf2 format. Place the file on the PS3 and edit dosbox-0.74.conf to set the value 'midiconfig' to the full path to the file. It's also necessary to change the 'mididevice' option to the value 'synth'.
There is currently no PS3 optimized loader. The DOS commands needed to launch the game need to be type every time you start the app. You can reduce the typing by adding common lines to the dosbox config file's autoexec section.

    Using soft mouse and keyboard:

When loading the application PS3 game pad one begins in Mouse Mode. In mouse mode the left stick moves the cursor, Cross sends a left click, and Square sends a right click. Pressing L3 will turn on keyboard mode.

In keyboard mode, the left stick moves the cursor, pressing cross presses the highlighted key. When a key is highlighted and any button is pressed (other than Cross, Square, L3 and R3) that button will be mapped to the key, in mouse mode pressing the button will be the same as pressing the key on the keyboard. Press L3 to return to mouse mode. This is useful, for example, to map the DPad to the keyboards arrow keys.

In mouse mode, press R3 to enter joystick mode. In this mode the game pad acts as an SDL joystick.

    Tip from Medox:

Those who want to mount folders from the ps3's hdd:

    1. Use openps3ftp (or something similar) and create a folder inside dosbox's USRDIR:
    /dev_hdd0/game/HBDB90000/USRDIR/yourfolder

    2. open /dev_hdd0/game/HBDB90000/USRDIR/.dosbox/dosbox-0.74.conf and add this at the very bottom (after [autoexec]):
    mount c ~/yourfolder

      i followed this tutorial here -> http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/showthread.php?t=26128

maybe the Dosbox.conf file needs just some more tweaking

I just installed it and copied across my dosbox setup from my pc. I now have Windows 3.1 running on it It's kinda slow and the colours are weird inside windows but I don't know if that's just a config issue for me. I played jezzball with the controller and was pretty easy. Can't wait to map some keys and get into some better games

King's Quest, all 7 of them, do they work? I've already got the Wii version of DosBox, and it runs King's Quest 5 and 6 amazingly (the two I play the most). I need to find a copy of The Incredible Toon Machine though. Any help there?

This looks very promising. Looking forward to later versions.

So far I've tried Duke Nukem 2, Tyrian, and Cyberdogs and they've all worked flawlessly with sound and the support for using the PS3 controller as a joystick is great.

      And the source is... where?
SDL for PSL1GHT don't *at least* have keyboard support, and is a bit flakey at best. Or is there an other public port of SDL for the PS3 gameos that I don't know of?
Oh, and DosBox is GPL too (but who cares about those sources ).

Edit: found it. http://code.google.com/p/sdcell/ . But it is not for PSL1GHT. Is is for the warez SDK from Sony? Which probably would imply that the dosbox binary is illegal to distribute? Anyone care to enligten me on these issues, thnx.

What's the largest cycle count you can use without emulation slowing down and sound beginning to skip? I didn't get very good results when I used DosBox in OtherOS, even minimized overhead from the slow framebuffer (using frameskip and unscaled 320x200 window). Scaling won't be problem in GameOS though. I found the emulation speed was between 286 and a slow 386, so good luck trying to use Fallout and Win95. Good for really old games though (really old in DOS terms).

Normally it'd be good to use "cycles max" setting to get all out of it, if that works in this GameOS version, but setting cycles manually is good for benchmarking how far you can go. The default core setting is the best you can use on non-x86 CPU (the CELL) and it is damn slow. On PC you can use "dynamic" which is really fast, you can even play Quake 1 and Carmageddon with great results (which are among the heaviest last DOS games.)
