  • discBOOT - Play PS3 Games Burned to DVD/BD

Developer deank has released another great tool for all of your jailbroken PS3 consoles, called discBOOT. This tool will allow you to play your PS3 game backups, both on DVD and BD, through the XMB without the need for a backup manager on 3.41/3.55 CFW/MFW. You will also be able to take screen-shots and listen to music while playing games using this method.

    Hey there folks!

Here is the promised little tool, which will let you play your backups of original PS3 games when burned on DVD/DVD-RW/BD/BDRE discs.

Download link: discBOOT (1.3MB) (Windows application)

If you're familiar with ebootFIX tools you won't have problems. It will be included in the ebootFIX/MOD package for the next multiMAN FULL version.

The usage is simple and you're provided with instructions once the program completes its job:

    Code:
    1) Drag & Drop to discBOOT.exe the "PS3_GAME" folder of the game you want to play
    2) The tool will create a folder with 3 files:
    - PKG for 3.41
    - PKG for 3.55
    - TXT with instructions
    3) Burn the game to a disc (PS3_GAME folder and PS3_DISC.SFB file from a backup created with multiMAN or another manager)
    4) Insert the burned disc into your PS3 tray
    5) Install the PKG file for your firmware on your PS3
    6) Launch the game from the newly appeared icon

    That's it.
IMPORTANT: When you burn the game to a DVD/BD disc, make sure that you're using a proper backup of the game. It means ALL files as they were backed-up on the internal hdd of your PS3 - no split .666## files should be present. All 4GB+ files must be in once piece.

Proper steps to create a DVD/BD backup of a PS3 game:
    Code:
    1) Start multiMAN and insert the original PS3 game disc
    2) Create a backup of the game to:
    - If game contains files bigger than 4GB -> INTERNAL HDD
    - If game doesn't contain files bigger than 4GB -> internal or external
    3) Transfer the backup copy to your PC (if game contains 4GB+ files you may have to use FTP)

At this point you should have the PS3 game backup on your PC with all files 1:1 (no split files!)

    4) Open a burning program like IMGBURN and drag PS3_GAME folder and PS3_DISC.SFB file to the root of the compilation
    5) Burn the disc
The good things that come with this:

    * You can now make in-game SCREENSHOTS for all games you play via this method
    * You can play music from XMB Music column (background music) while playing the game
    * This method doesn't require payloads of any kind - only CFW/MFW on your PS3

Here is a screenshot I just took: (press {PS} button while in-game, go to Photo column and select "Screenshot")

Remember: Use this method ONLY with legally owned original PS3 games.

There is no guarantee that this method will work with all games, but if you follow the instructions in this post and generated txt - all should be fine.

How does it work? discBOOT application:

    1) uses the original game folder to get the icons, sounds and PARAM.SFO
    2) doesn't change/mod any of the original files - it only copies ICON*.PNG, PIC*.PNG, SND0.AT3, the license and trophies
    3) uses a precompiled PS3 program, which enables direct disc access, enables screenshot and background music and then waits until a disc is present with /dev_bdvd/PS3_GAME/USRDIR/EBOOT.BIN. If no disc is present - it will just sit on black screen until you insert one. You can't use original PS3 disc.
    4) Once it finds the file - it executes it - that's it.

    Enjoy!

    Dean

Even if it were possible, someone would have to write a TSR (terminate and stay resident) program to handle the transfer of data over the network as needed and still play the game without any noticeable lag in gameplay. It could probably work for emulators because the roms tend to be small in size, but PS3 games tend to need a higher data transfer rate than most, if not all, networks can handle. Plus you run into memory limitations, and alot of games need data to be written to memory at specific locations (like save game data or your general progress in the game). It's my understanding that a TSR would have to be at least one of the first few things placed in memory, which would offset all data in memory after that which would pretty much screw up the game. Maybe when the PS4 comes out and networks have also advanced this might be possible, but I don't think it ever will be on the PS3.

Oh, and don't sweat the newbish question. We were all noobs at one point. It's never a bad idea to ask if you don't know something, I just hope I know enough to help
The PS2 can play games over a network connection. Why not the PS3? It took a long time for the ability to play games over a network on ps2 to show up in the scene but it did happen.

If memory serves me well. The PS3 can play PS2 games via SMB Share using Open PS2 Loader. Seems to me that playing PS3 games over a network connection is possible. The PS3 Bluray drive reads at around 9 MB/s no matter if it is dual layer or single layer. The ps3 could handle the speed requirement of streaming games over a network. Surely the PS3 would meet any hardware requirements as well. However, as you mentioned, the software side would be the challenging part. There are plenty of great PS3 Devs out there that could pull it off in my opinion. We can load a .self over a network connection! That's a start! LoL

Heck! Even the Wii has a Proof of Concept for playing wii games over WiFi! Don't think it went far in the development but, ITS POSSIBLE. LoL

I'm not saying i can do it, or anyone else for that matter. What i am saying is that it is POSSIBLE! LoL

I think deank would have mentioned that if it did play 3.60 games. Since we cant decrypt 3.60 appldr, we cant decrypt 3.60 eboots. So yeah, whenever Sony decides to encrypt their eboot with 3.60 applr keys, then you wont be able to play these games.

being able to listen to music and play games at the same time is a big plus for me. it'll also be nice to make some room on my hard drive too. glad to see the scene is still moving forward.

Granted, it could be possible, but I seriously doubt it would be practical. Most home networks can not maintain a sustained transfer rate of anywhere close to 9 MB/s especially if there are multiple internet connected devices in the home because the router would split the data transfers between the different devices and even though you wouldn't be connecting through the internet, just your local network, you would end up with a game that stutters and freezes at random awkward times, basically making the game unplayable. Think about the last time you tried to play a disc game that was badly scratched. The PS2 was not a Hi-Def system and I'm not familiar with the specs on the Wii, but I can't picture that little kids toy being a true Hi-Def system if it does have the capabilities. From what I've seen of the games they are pretty simple and less involved than anything on the 360 or PS3 so you can't really compare those systems. The PS3 would need that constant high data transfer rate to be enjoyable

I can't foresee RAM being an issue (because the game still needs to be loaded into memory piece by piece regardless of it being on a BD, HD or network). If you can have the PS3 look at a different location for the backup then the only limiting factor should transfer speed.

Considering the majority of people are using 5,400RPM drives as their backup medium (mine is 80MB/s), reading a game over Gigabit Ethernet or some sort of eSata RAID setup should be feasible... I don't think wifi would be fast enough, though I am curious of the data speed that is necessary to avoid slowdown in games.

I like this idea. It's a good reason to burn backups instead of leaving them on my server. Compressed it's 1.2TB. It's also a reason to get a Blue-ray burner. I sense this may even help to drive cost of blue-ray disc down a little bit since a lot of people may use this.

The way you suggest would be possible, but most people don't have the high end network like what you're talking about. Most people have a desktop or laptop, a wireless router, and their PS3. If someone did work out the details with the software, the majority of home networks just don't have the capabilities to properly support playing games over the network. It does sound like a good idea, just not a practical one

So is it possible to have a backed up game in the drive and launch another backed up game from the hard drive, so negating the need for an original disk in the drive? Anyone tried?

i doubt this would work i may be wrong but i doubt you will be able to do this as from what im understanding u need to install a pkg file to the ps3 which effectivly will tell the ps3 to bypass bluray checks i assume and load the game on the dvd if burnt to dvd. so i would still think you will need an original blu ray game for multiMan to function loading games. dont quote me on this as i may have misunderstood what these apps do.

Jesus, what kind of terrible networking are you using?

Even if you had a terrible switch/router (with only Gb throughput across all ports) and had a couple of fiber (100Mb) connections maxed out - > you should still be rocking well above 9MB/s on GbE (PC -> PS3).

You would have to be using 10/100 (or wireless) to get slower than 9MB/s - in which case you have no-one to blame but yourself (stop using ancient tech).

Great new possibility but useless for now except loosing more money in burning and killing the nature cause not so much ecololy compliance !
Cause no more compatibility & less flexibility once burned u can't change eboot etc.
