  • discBOOT - Play PS3 Games Burned to DVD/BD

Developer deank has released another great tool for all of your jailbroken PS3 consoles, called discBOOT. This tool will allow you to play your PS3 game backups, both on DVD and BD, through the XMB without the need for a backup manager on 3.41/3.55 CFW/MFW. You will also be able to take screen-shots and listen to music while playing games using this method.

    Hey there folks!

Here is the promised little tool, which will let you play your backups of original PS3 games when burned on DVD/DVD-RW/BD/BDRE discs.

Download link: discBOOT (1.3MB) (Windows application)

If you're familiar with ebootFIX tools you won't have problems. It will be included in the ebootFIX/MOD package for the next multiMAN FULL version.

The usage is simple and you're provided with instructions once the program completes its job:

    Code:
    1) Drag & Drop to discBOOT.exe the "PS3_GAME" folder of the game you want to play
    2) The tool will create a folder with 3 files:
    - PKG for 3.41
    - PKG for 3.55
    - TXT with instructions
    3) Burn the game to a disc (PS3_GAME folder and PS3_DISC.SFB file from a backup created with multiMAN or another manager)
    4) Insert the burned disc into your PS3 tray
    5) Install the PKG file for your firmware on your PS3
    6) Launch the game from the newly appeared icon

    That's it.
IMPORTANT: When you burn the game to a DVD/BD disc, make sure that you're using a proper backup of the game. It means ALL files as they were backed-up on the internal hdd of your PS3 - no split .666## files should be present. All 4GB+ files must be in once piece.

Proper steps to create a DVD/BD backup of a PS3 game:
    Code:
    1) Start multiMAN and insert the original PS3 game disc
    2) Create a backup of the game to:
    - If game contains files bigger than 4GB -> INTERNAL HDD
    - If game doesn't contain files bigger than 4GB -> internal or external
    3) Transfer the backup copy to your PC (if game contains 4GB+ files you may have to use FTP)

At this point you should have the PS3 game backup on your PC with all files 1:1 (no split files!)

    4) Open a burning program like IMGBURN and drag PS3_GAME folder and PS3_DISC.SFB file to the root of the compilation
    5) Burn the disc
The good things that come with this:

    * You can now make in-game SCREENSHOTS for all games you play via this method
    * You can play music from XMB Music column (background music) while playing the game
    * This method doesn't require payloads of any kind - only CFW/MFW on your PS3

Here is a screenshot I just took: (press {PS} button while in-game, go to Photo column and select "Screenshot")

Remember: Use this method ONLY with legally owned original PS3 games.

There is no guarantee that this method will work with all games, but if you follow the instructions in this post and generated txt - all should be fine.

How does it work? discBOOT application:

    1) uses the original game folder to get the icons, sounds and PARAM.SFO
    2) doesn't change/mod any of the original files - it only copies ICON*.PNG, PIC*.PNG, SND0.AT3, the license and trophies
    3) uses a precompiled PS3 program, which enables direct disc access, enables screenshot and background music and then waits until a disc is present with /dev_bdvd/PS3_GAME/USRDIR/EBOOT.BIN. If no disc is present - it will just sit on black screen until you insert one. You can't use original PS3 disc.
    4) Once it finds the file - it executes it - that's it.

    Enjoy!

    Dean

I'm wondering if the quality/brand of the burned dvd/Blueray disc could damage the PS3 blueray reader slowly. Can anyone answer me please. Thanks in advance!

I doubt it, the same would then be true for all copied CD's/DVD's , unless the disc is so crappy that it shatters inside while spinning

Unless I'm missing something I don't see the point in unecessarily wearing out the PS3 laser when you can load from the HDD. Plus loading times are a bit better.

So, do you play thru package or from disc icon. Nice work either way...

I would have agreed with you before today. I have 1 terabyte internal and 1 terabyte external. This may sound like alot to some, but I've already filled both of them up and had to do a little cleaning of the drives because there's some other stuff I want to put on there. I hated to do that but right now I can't afford another external drive and I'm sure that there are alot of users who are currently stuck with only their stock hard drive. I filled my stock 160 GB hard drive inside of a week. This is about giving people options on how they use their system if they can't afford to buy a bigger or better hard drive. DVDs for the most part can be found pretty cheaply and make a great temporary solution

but another external HDD would be better than continually replacing the laser

Absolutely it is ideal to play your videos and games off of a hard drive because you get faster access speeds which mean less time waiting on a game to load and like you said you run the risk of having to replace the laser lens or motor every few months if you use your PS3 heavily. Anybody who reads this, if you can afford it, upgrade your hard drive before using this pkg to play games frequently. If you can't afford a bigger hard drive, this is probably a good solution for you, just make sure that it is a temporary solution. Otherwise, you might regret it when you have to start ordering parts and dismantling your system to gain access to the disc drive.

Question: Is it possible to play backed up games from a networked hard drive?

Normally I wouldn't ask such a newbish question but I'm new to the scene and don't quite know where to go for this basic knowledge.

Maybe this could be further advanced to allow for Multi-Game BD Discs. Could be possible to create a menu to select the game you would like to play. Doesn't seem too far fetched does it? I could be way off base here but it does seem feasible to have multi-game discs.

Nice, well if you look at it in a optmistic way, its better to have many options of booting a game then having only one static one

I seriously doubt it unless someone like deank (creator of multiman) figures out how to do a redirection of the PS3 file structure like the way that you can hit Select+X to redirect your game back up and make your PS3 think it is physically inserted in the drive. Even if it were possible, someone would have to write a TSR (terminate and stay resident) program to handle the transfer of data over the network as needed and still play the game without any noticeable lag in gameplay. It could probably work for emulators because the roms tend to be small in size, but PS3 games tend to need a higher data transfer rate than most, if not all, networks can handle. Plus you run into memory limitations, and alot of games need data to be written to memory at specific locations (like save game data or your general progress in the game). It's my understanding that a TSR would have to be at least one of the first few things placed in memory, which would offset all data in memory after that which would pretty much screw up the game. Maybe when the PS4 comes out and networks have also advanced this might be possible, but I don't think it ever will be on the PS3.

Oh, and don't sweat the newbish question. We were all noobs at one point. It's never a bad idea to ask if you don't know something, I just hope I know enough to help

      WHAT???? NO TOAST??????

All I know is that deank is one of the hardest working guys in the scene and I can't even imagine how much of his free time he gives up so we can enjoy our systems. I will probably never use this program, but it's good to have options. Whether you understand it, can use it, or whatever, doesn't mean that someone else won't have a need for it. Some people just forget that there are probably thousands of different system setups out there and there are a lot of noobs who are still using stock hardware with their CFW. Look at the size of some of these games and it wouldn't take long to fill up a stock hard drive.
