Could We See The Reveal of Sony's Next GEN Console This Month?

I'm sure many an avid PlayStation follower and scener has noticed the ever flowing rumors regarding Sony's next generation console, dubbed the Orbis. We have reported here regarding the subject, however many more rumors have been circulating the internet. This includes the specifications of the console and when, or if, Sony will reveal it's latest rendition in 2013 or 2014. Following kotaku some might have noticed a teaser video, released by Sony, that suggests a reveal of it's next gen console could be as close as 20 February 2013. Check out the video below.

Sony just posted this video on the PlayStation blog. Looks like a teaser for the next PlayStation (code-named Orbis), don't you think? It ends with a date: February 20, 2013. Will Sony announce their next console then?

We've confirmed with Sony that the event will be livestreamed. More details to come.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that "people familiar with the matter" have told them the next PlayStation will indeed debut at the event on February 20.

Is this just a marketing ploy for hype and media attention or could we see Sony beating it's rival, XBOX, to the punch?

It would actually make sense to announce their system outside E3 and before Microsoft. The 360 was announced this way with a MTV special.

It would be nice to see Sony being the first to launch a newer console.. Maybe they could stop complaining about losing money off the bat because of competition and not blame everyone, everything, every scene for the money lose. Just my thought..

I just hope they keep capacitive buttons because the traditional buttons on the newer slims feel cheap as hell.

Well this generation looks more like a traditional PC more than ever. Let's hope that means better backwards compatibility moving into the future, assuming they don't do something crazy again like using an odd architecture like CELL.

I'm sure it's the NEW PS4 - I'm assuming & predict it's specs will be better than the Xbox 720 & they know it hence then doing an early announcement as many of the reports are saying I agree that it will definitely be backwards compatible - have a touch screen controller - & Gaikai will be linked in someway with lots of social interaction etc... What I'm worried about is the price? I would hope they'll have some sense & price this sensibly - charging $500 like I'm hearing these days is insane!!??

Yeah, expect the $500 price range, at least. Even a handheld started at $300 (granted, with cellular 3G support) so you can expect the price of this to be through the roof. Besides, people pay $600+ for Iphones.

i'm not sure if you count it but the wiiu...

anyways, like people are saying, if it's more powerful than the 720 and comes out earlier, that'd be the tits. that'd really put other consoles in their place.

I hate capacitive buttons. I have them on two of my TVs and they are a bitch to use in the dark. Give me real buttons anytime.

I agree with Raikalo. With 'smart phones' being so expensive, you'd think that Sony would charge slightly more, especially if their new console is far more advanced than the PS3.

I'm more concerned about rumours about single ownership games, with them being tied to your account only?! That would be pretty gutting.

It's Sony, so expect a 500-600$ price range (this will translate in 500-600€, which doesn't make much sense, but well ...).

And games at 70$ the first 2 years at least.

A lot of people are stating that this is too early, and that some good games are still ahead of the PS3. Too early ? I'm sorry, but the PS3 is in it's 7th year. How can it be too early ?

To be honest with you guys I was expecting the next-gen to start 1 year ago.

The lifespan of a console is reducing slowly, and will eventually come to a 5 year for each generation. Considering how fast the hardware industry is advancing, it's common sense.

A hardware can't last that long anymore, or it will be at the expense of developers creativity and possibilities.

I wouldn't be too concerned. That will never happen as long as games are released as discs and internet access in the US remains the same.

I doubt Sony would make that console pricing mistake again. I expect $400 for the console and $60 for games in this economy. Also, to me it seems like the life cycles of consoles are stretching longer rather than shorter.

good games are still ahead of the ps3. david cage is exactly right saying that devs should still consider this console.

when you see some beautiful games that come out, that's how you know that other devs aren't using the ps3 to the potential.

Actually, closer to 5 years used to be more the norm before a new gen, they have actually gotten longer as far as i can tell....

But yeah, it's pretty obvious to me that they are going to announce the new PlayStation; even news sites like the BBC and The Guardian have been saying it, I can't believe a PSX scene site is so far behind with this news.... but still, good post, no disrespect intended.

They have been boasting about all their past consoles in separate videos added to that page to the announcement. It is pretty blatent now that they are going to announce the PS4.

Yeah, I think at this point we can be pretty sure. I'm excited and 6PM EST can't come fast enough.

It's funny how when the PS3 came out they boasted about a long 10 year console cycle, and today if they announce the PS4, that will mean the 360 has at least a year longer cycle.

yeah though 360 exclusives don't look as nice visually as PS3 exclusives. Gameplay on them isn't as good either actually.... PS3 just has better exclusives.

To me, the PS3 exclusives are better than the 360 exclusives, so, to me the PS3 is better since it has more features, better hardware, better reliability and the better games. If the next xbox is better than the PS4 I will get that but I just doubt the games will be better.
