  • CobraUSB Update 3.55 Cobra CFW

The latest update appears to be a bit vague, but it actually adds support for 3.55 consoles (via utilization of their own Cobra CFW). It isn't specified if it will remove functions of an existing CFW on the console, but it seems the logic they are going with is if you have Cobra, you don't need other CFWs.

it's still a bit unclear on how the process works, as it says 3.55 support, but then further specifies that you must be running 3.41 on the feature list. But the user guide may provide some clarification for those technical minded.

Cobra USB requires certain binary files of the firmware not to be changed. Changing these files may
make Cobra USB not to work at all, or to behave incorrectly. Changing fonts, xml, etc is fine, if the user
    knows what he is doing.
I'm not going to make any further assumptions on the matter, we will have to wait until it is tested and it can be further understood. I'd recommend you heed the warning above though.

This would almost certainly be a direct reaction to the recent dumping of the devices 2.0 version, one can only assume it is to keep customers loyal and future customers coming in(what company wouldn't do that really). Now with the recent 3.0 features added here is the revised feature list of CobraUSB:

Well I just ordered Cobra 3.0 xD, I can't wait to test new stuff =P. And as always I will keep supporting the open source scene & free projects.

I remember when I bought a TI calculator then a E3 stick, then I went for Kmeaw xD, the beauty of evolution, now Cobra for my old PS3 without a BD-Drive.

      SeeYa!

Exactly! Plus I love and always will support the other projects that are already open source and free to everyone, I hate in a way that Cobra Team is not releasing their exploit to everyone free. I believe that they would get lot of good donations even if they release this for free (not the hardware of course xD).

I agree, but then we go and look at MultiMAN and how Deank only got $25 of donations up until like 2 weeks ago =/

Wish people would support devs more, and then maybe things would progress quicker

I think same as you, sometimes things look so nice, clean and simple on the user interface but when you see the code behind all of it, then you can see how difficult it was for the developer / programmer to write and put all that logic in the proper place so everything work great. All of that requires time, sometimes less and sometimes more. So I believe that everyone that can, and have some extra dollars, should donate to the people who deserve it most.

      SeeYa!

I don't even have a PS3 that would allow CFW, but i still have donated money to the scene ($30 all up). Not much, but enough for some people.

Actually I have made a decision, and you may be my witness. I'll match my current expenditure on donations (mentioned above) and give it to the Cobra Team if they make the code completely open source.

I'm also thinking of donating $10 to JFW when its finished(regardless of open source or not)

EDIT: I just realized you are one of the very developers we are talking about ! If i every need to use your tools, expect a donation !

hmm kinda funny that on the list they posted in the article it doesnt say anything about ps2 backups, so were they removed or not yet working in fw version 3.0 ?i was thinking that maybe there would be better support for ps2,like for the 100% back compatible consoles,i hope hansi still has the dongle he used to sniff the 2.0fw,and if there is anything that you would be able to do on 3.55 that you cant on 3.41 ,or less, like the suspicious absence of anything mentioning ps2 in the features list

It is mentioned on page 10 of the updated v3.0 User Manual (PDF):

      http://www.cobra-usb.com/downloads/u...english_v3.pdf

Here is a direct quote from the latest user manual (edited a few lines so they are readable without formatting):

      Making PS2 backups

This feature is mainly for backwards compatible models (CECHA, CECHB, CECHC and CECHE). PS2 mode
won’t appear in other models unless the software emulator option is unlocked (see “Settings menu”
      section)

      1. Start Cobra USB Manager from XMB.
      2. Press square four times to change to PS2 mode.
      3. Insert an original PS2 game or a DVD+/-R or CD-R backup. It will appear at the beginning of the
      list.
      4. Select it, press circle, and choose the destination device from the list. Wait for the copy to
      complete.

      Playing PS2 backups

This feature is mainly for backwards compatible models (CECHA, CECHB, CECHC and CECHE), although
PS2 backups can be loaded in other models if the software emulator is unlocked (see “Settings Menu”
      section).

Currently, ps2 backups can only be loaded from internal disc, and not from external drives or optical
discs. You can however transfer backups between them.

      1. Start Cobra USB Manager from XMB.
      2. Press square four times to change to PS2 mode.
      3. Choose the backup from the list and press X.
      4. Cobra USB Manager will mount the backup and exit. You can start the PS2 game backup from
the XMB. Don’t forget that you must assign slots to virtual memory cards in the XMB if they
      aren’t already assigned.

Cobra USB Manager uses the following directories for PS2 backups:

      · /dev_hdd0/PS2ISO
      · /dev_usbXXX/PS2ISO -> currently, only for transferring, not loading

      Allowed format are:

      · DVD backups: iso files with 2048 bytes per sector.
      · CD backups:

      1. ISO files with 2048 or 2352 bytes per sector; CD backups with 2352 bytes per sector are
      more compatible.
      2. Cue+bin: Data track must be mode 2/2352.
Cue+bin+wav is not supported: audio tracks in wav files are ignored.
PS2 iso backups are automatically unmounted when returning to XMB from the game.
Because of the special nature of the PS2 emulator, Cobra USB must be connected when exiting a PS2
game from the emulator menu. If Cobra USB is not connected, you will return to a normal not patched
      3.55 XMB.

      PS2 region

Currently, there is no support to load original games from different region. However, backups in iso are
region free, and the ps2 emulator successfully switches to the proper frame rate.
The regional lock of original discs doesn’t apply to making backups; you can backup your regional locked
game and play the iso backup.
      SeeYaa!

As per their site, PS2 iso playback works only for CECHC and CECHE.

CECHA and CECHB will be supported in future updates.
