PSX-SCENE Forum Discussion for Sony PlayStation/PsOne/PS2/PS3/PSP/PS VITA
  • CobraUSB 2.0 Update - PS2 ISO Support Added

Users that lack backwards compatible PS3's, were previously out of luck when it came to playing such classic PS2 titles as Metal Gear Solid 2, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, or Gran Turismo 4. That all changed today, with the release of a new 2.0 update for the CobraUSB dongle. The dongle previously only allowed playback of PSX ISO's but now adds support for PS2 ISO's to its list of features.

As great of news as this is, it should be noted that the manufacturer states that playback of PS2 ISO's on consoles lacking hardware backwards compatibility, must rely on the built-in software emulator. They go on to state that the the built in software emulator is rather buggy and sometimes slow, so it should only be considered a gimmick for the time being. However, if your system does have hardware backwards compatibility, you can expect the same great playback as if you were running the PS2 game from a disc.

Furthermore, the new update brings a host of new bugfixes and improvements. One such improvement is the ability to run PS3, PSX, DVD and BluRay ISO’s without needing an authentic disc inside the system. The manufacturer goes on to state that this functionality will arrive for PS2 ISO's in a future update.

We have released Cobra Firmware v2.0 and Cobra USB Manager v2.0, which are both available from the downloads page. Changes in this release include:

Added the ability to play PS2 ISO backups from CECHC and CECHE backwards compatible consoles. Support for the remaining backwards compatible models, CECHA and CECHB, will come in a future update

PS3, PSX, DVD and BluRay ISO’s can now be played without a real disc inserted in the PS3. Support for discless PS2 backups will come in a future update

Added an option for those users without a PS2 backwards compatible PS3 (including Slims) to test PS2 original games and ISO backups using the PS2 software only emulator which is by default included with all PS3′s. Please note however that as the software only emulator is slow and very buggy, this feature is disabled by default and is only intended as a gimmick

Cobra USB manager can now make PS3 ISO’s from backups in the standard “Jailbreak” directory format, using the copy function

Cobra USB manager is now less strict with cue/bin filenames

Bugfix: Cobra USB Manager was unable to get the PSX CD-ROM/CD-R title, and displayed “PSX-CDROM” instead

Bugfix: Under rare circumstances, Cobra USB Manager could dump invalid PS3 discs

PS3 Slim can not play PS2 ISos End of story.

But a Few changes in Multiman can allows backwards compataiable models to backup PS2 Games and launch them. Since the source code is released I am going to give it a try not making an changes to dean's retro emulator work but adding it. Also thinking of making a CHT feature somehow. maybe with a change directory to use an eboot.bin from a different folder.

Do you have to be on FW3.41 for this or is 3.55 ok too. I heard the sony fixed the dongle hack in 3.55, but probably doesn't use that exploit, since that the console needs to already be jailbroken already anyway.

Because for some reason they can't be bothered. I have myself raised the question about it and have seen other people post threads about it but it's never been applied by anyone apart from the Cobra devs. I personally just want the PS3 DVD reading for games and films to be region free (and please you dumb gits get it into your heads that the PS3 is region coded before you message me that it isn't) so I can buy and use import games that were never release in my region. There is swap magic which could be a reason why they didn't bother, so we could all get that if we want but it's not ideal if you get irritated by load speeds because I hear the read speed is slow due to it being USB1.

PS3 is region locked for games? No it isn't.

I have a PAL PS3. US (NTSC) games that I have used on it, work fine. Also, Japanese games which I have tried on it, also work fine.

So what are you going on about? You sure you are calling the correct people dumb? The PS3 is only region locked for movie DVDs/Blu-rays NOT games.

Looks like you are the one who is dumb...

I said PS3 DVD reading of games and films, not PS3 games which are all blu ray. Yet again someone replies to my post without reading what i've said properly. This is exactly what I was talking about when I said dumb.

I was only on about PS2 games. I wouldn't have mentioned about swap magic and USB1 load times which are exclusively to do with the PS2 and the PS2 compatibility in the PS3.

Too bad it doesn't support CFW 3.55 plus my ps3 is CECHA so thats not supported either. Would be awesome to get full ps2 playback on it though.

I would appreciate PS1 iso support on CFW3.55 or Multiman. PS2 full compatibility on non backwards compatible PS3's is a pipe dream.

actually it is region locked only most ppl will never find out because the developer of the games decide if they want them to be locked, there are 2 -3 titles I know of which are locked
