  • Breaking News: Cobra Releases Source Code for Cobra USB

As i told you guys about the Cobra USB dongle going open source a couple days ago here. The Cobra Team has now released the source code!!!! That right the source code for the dongle has been released. So how did I know this was coming? Oddly enough this came from a request of mine that I presented to Cobra Team through rep magento. Really my goal was trying to find an official stance on what the road map of the USB device was, since it's release in early 2011 the device has boasted some fairly impressive features, but kind of remained staled of late and not progressing with the scene, but yet had many impressive exclusives features still. That is when I then sent out the following message:

"it's about time to perhaps give back to the scene a bit? maybe release the dongles exclusives. There is not many exclusives but it would be a great move seen from cobra."

So to my absolute surprise I got the reply i showed days ago from Cobra that read

"Open sourcing COBRA USB dongle files has been approved. We think it will be a good thing for the scene and there is no reason not to do it. It will all be made public probably this week. Thank you for the suggestion."

Then after a few followup messages i then received the overview.txt file i posted a couple days ago on my initial announcement of this news. So there you have it, after all the times we have had developers and hackers getting close or saying they had the device cracked. it was your own PSX-Scene Writer who made a simple request and the Cobra Team agreed. So that could be the most shocking part in all this, well it is to me. . Thanks to team Cobra for making a great decision here. Lets hope the scene advances it and lets also hope we see some open updates from to time on scene related things from Cobra. Hopefully this is a start of more from the Cobra Team.

Take a look below at the official message from magneto who is the official Support Rep. for Cobra over at Official Support forums Cobra host at PS3crunch.net forums.

A few days ago, STLcardsWS sent us a request, asking if we could release the source code of the Cobra USB dongle.

Today, we are fulfilling this request with a release of the full source code. We are releasing the entire source code under the GPL license.
You will find an overview.txt file which explains the content of each directory, and a readme.txt file in the cobralib subdirectory which explains its API and how to use it.

The source code is massive, and represents countless hours of work, containing 33,346 lines of C code, 5,981 lines of C++ code, 2,728 lines of assembly code and 35,530 lines in header files. We are sure that you can make good use of it, in part or in whole, within the community.
We hope that this release will be useful to the PS3 scene as a whole and that some of our exclusive features can be ported to the new and free custom firmwares.

As for all those haters out there who found the announcement of this effort as a new pretext to show your hate towards us, let it be known that this is not a PR stunt as you seem to think, this idea came from STLcardsWS, writer for psx-scene and dashhacks, who sent his request to us, and we accepted it.

We have no obligation to release the source, and if you don't want or like it, then simply don't download it. We are saddened to see people still finding ways to complain no matter what we decide to do. Even if it is for the scene that we do it. It is truly sad to see some people unable to show any other emotions than hate and ungratefulness.

Thank You!!! I, unlike some people, understand wanting to make money off an idea you had and the hard work you put into that idea. I also appreciate you thought it was time to share.

Isnt it also possible to play ps3 games from a network with the cobra dongle? Like for example you have games on your PC's HDD, connect with your PS3 and then play without having them on your PS3's HDD??
I heard of that a few months ago, was just wondering because it would save a lot of time and HDD space for me...

@yankeemay that was one of Cobra Exclusives and having PS3 in ISO format.

      from above features i listed
      Enjoy PS3/BD/DVD/PSX ISO/CUE+BIN from network

      Thanks STLcardsWS.

"Integrated support to play PSP game ISO’s from HDD" would be great!!!

The atual process of convertion one by one needs some improvement.

Read the first post where they outline how much code is in this thing.

actually, if you remove all code for the USB dongle hardware, that's not needed for pure software solution like integration in cfw, as well remove the code for Cobra DRM (again, no needed, because its only purpose was to obfuscate how Cobra works when the code hasn't open-sourced yet) and remove other common code that has nothing to do with the actual work of Cobra, then the rest of the code, which is the essence is not that much.

The best thing about open source is that more people can improve and learn from other people's work and maybe get those darn PSP Remasters working better.
