I'm with you man. I would check this thing non stop 24/7 for news but with turkish in the picture i don't think thats going to happen for a while. I irked Sony this week asking why there is no mention of removing OtherOS other than the 3.21 firmware revision. I asked why it wasnt in future firmwares (incase a person updates from 3.76 to 3.56). Basically they state they are not allowed to comment on the OtherOS removal feature in firmware 3.21, than the canned response. Me pointing out it was not mentioned in future firmwares didnt go as well as i had planned. (sorry for long copy/paste of my email)

As much as we would like to address all of your questions, there are certain topics that are simply out of the scope of this department within Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA). You have reached the Consumer Services Department within SCEA, and we handle all general inquiries for our PlayStation(R) family of products, warranty and repair information, installation and troubleshooting, general corporate business inquiries, and third party software referrals, just to name a few.
Very specific questions on any particular product (e.g., manufacturing process), programming details of software or hardware, 'reasons or beliefs' on why a product did or did not include certain features, personal opinions, and personal contact information for developers, publishers, and other company employees, are some of the topics that cannot be addressed. Also, there are certain topics that we may not be able to address due to the fact that they are confidential and proprietary to SCEA.
In most cases, features are not removed but rather added or enhanced with firmware updates. Also, security may be enhanced or the current Blu-ray encryption key is the reason for the update.

Thank you for confirming that the OtherOS feature will be removed when i updtate my old console to the newest revision. I am just wondering why the removal is not stated in later firmwares. Are there other features that will be removed in future revisions that will not be stated? I only ask this as i do not keep up on the PS3 scene as regularly as others. Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.

Thank you for writing us concerning your question about the System Update 3.56 not stating anything about removing the "Other OS System" The information about this was released on System Update 3.21 which was sent out April 1, 2010. Below is complete information about the "Other OS System" removal:
On April 1, 2010, Sony Computer Entertainment is anticipated to release PS3 system software version 3.21. This version of the PS3 system software will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.
For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.
Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available:

Ability to sign in to PlayStation®Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later

When i update from firmware 2.76 to 3.55 or 3.56, it doesn't state that there is a removal of OtherOS in the EULA. A friend of mine said that would happen. Can you state where in the EULA for the 3.56 firmware that it says if i update specifically where it and other features may be removed.?

for all people who think this please go install geohots 3.55 firmware then try run a backup manager gia or multiman and then try run your games guess what they dont work
also crying about online hacks how can you hack online is a game like COD when you cant even get into the game

as for everthing else sony has covered there tracks well along with alot of money for court room influence they did tell people only on news websites and scene websites as i recall about the removal of other os

they did tell people also sadly any corp has the ability to ask for a TRO if they think someone is hacking there beloved machine

only thing i sort of see sony going against is the basic consumers rights act

as they did as far as i know i may be wrong on this state that you could install and run linux on your playstation 3

sadly the DMCA only covers iphones and hand held devices i think

yet cant we claim the ps3 as a hand held device as i can pick it up lol

Oh..... can i mention something else. (yes i know beating dead horse)
WHERE ARE THE FIRMWARE REQUIREMENTS ON PS3 GAMES? in the box, on the box, in the owners manual.....NOPE.

You have to install the game and then find out whether it requires FW 3.55, etc, and say...you must update in order to play.

Say a person purchases a PS3, has old firmware and dialup internet, or no internet.
they purchase from Walmart or Best buy. Most policies only return the game for the same game, no cash refund...etc. bingo, you still have an unplayable game or tie up your phone for a week trying to get the newest firmware revision to play offline.

#1. You then realize that its a pain to update firmware everytime you turn around.
#2. You already know you cant play multiplayer games as your connection is too slow.
#3. You wasted 40-70$ on a game you cannot play or return.

If you were more informed, you could make a better decision on whether to buy the game or not. PLEASE mention this in the court trial that Sony "changes what they want" and doesnt discuss to the end user. (they might if the person has a PSN account...who knows).
