KaKaRoTo Creates First PS3 Custom Firmware

The day everyone has been waiting for, is finally upon us. KaKaRoTo, famous for his work on the PL3 payload, has released a tool that converts a standard Sony retail firmware files, into a custom firmware. The custom firmware allows the installation of homebrew files (via package install), without the need for a jailbreak.

Please note, this does not appear to have the necessary patches in place, that are necessary for playing backups. However, that is a very trivial matter, considering the grand spectrum of what KaKaRoTo has achieved. Stay tuned to this post, as it will be updated as more info becomes available.

We can confirm, if you have legitimate v3.55 installed already, that custom firmware WILL still install!

Here is the update screen when trying to install 3.55CFW while on 3.55 official. Its a bit hard to read but it says:

Update data of the same version as the current system software was found. Do you want to install the same version?

@josuaarzensek custom firmware is what you want it to be, you run the script on 3.55 OFW and you get 3.55 CFW

Latest script should restore game save data, etc.. also with PS1/PS2 support for BC machines (unlike the jailbreak). IT'S DONE!

Expect new updated CFW soon, using the latest scripts, tweeted about above

Thanks to the tools made by the fail0verflow team (and thanks to sven in particular for his work on the pkg/unpkg tools), the first “Custom Firmware” is now available for the PS3!

I see a lot of questions coming up really fast on my Twitter account, so here are the basic things you need to know :

Because of legal/copyright issues, I will not provide the custom firmware to anyone, however, I’ve made available all the tools necessary to transform an Official firmware update, into a custom one, just grab my ps3utils repository from github, compile, then run :

./create_cfw.sh PS3UPDATE.PUP CFW.PUP
This will take the official firmware, unpack it, modify it, then repack it correctly (requires you to install ps3tools).

This requires Linux of course, but I’m sure others will do it for the masses and illegally release those files somewhere.

The advantage here is that you can do it for any firmware, if you want to keep version 3.41, then give it the 3.41 update, if you are on 3.55 already and can’t downgrade, then run the script on the official 3.55 firmware and it will create a modified 3.55 firmware.

You can put the file in a USB drive under the filename “PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP” and then go to system update in the XMB, and it will allow you to install the update (even if you’re already on 3.55).

People are asking what are the features of this firmware, it’s simple, all it does is to add those “Install Package Files” options to the Game section of the XMB. It doesn’t do anything else!

This firmware will not allow you to run the currently available homebrew application. Once the homebrew developers re-package their files in a ‘retail’ .pkg format with signed executable, then it will work (this should be coming soon thanks to the work of the fail0verflow team).

Since the kernel is left unmodified, this means that this custom firmware is really meant for future homebrew installation, and it will not allow piracy. I plan on keeping it that way.

This is just the first attempt at custom firmware, and it only contains a minor modification to allow you to install pkg files directly, eventually we’ll get some more options added to it in the future. This is just starting to get interesting!

BUT as damanptyltd says, u will be stuck (at least for a while):
- Your r on 3.55, so u have PSN (like all the days be4 with 3.55...)
- You cannot downgrade
- You cannot play Back ups
- You can "only" run signed codes which dont need those syscalls...
[correct me PLZ if im wrong]

With the keys leaked you can decrypt and run your signed code, so no problem here.

Well reading the article some more, you can provide a 3.41 pup to start with and get CFW3.41. The only difference between 3.41 and 3.5x is that fact they have added a revocation list to stop the downgrades and jailbreak from happening. What CFW3.41 allows is the ability to jailbreak and downgrade. Wait it out and see what happens, as very soon we will have signed packages that we can install.

Giving the fact that Sony prevented downgrade on the 3.55 firmware 1 week after some smart people of psjailbreak.com claimed that "downgrade is now available for all present past and future firmwares", I wouldn't be surprised that Sony releases a patch soon.

I'm not quiet sure i if i should be offended or honored by that. I am not a developer or anything, just an enthusiast. I know a LOT about the scene, been with it from day one. I would be a dev to be honest, but i'm not in the mood to mess around with linux nor do i have the time haha. I'm also the new moderator of the site, so you'll be seeing a lot of me around

So yea im in the middle and i'm doing the best i can to enlighten people. good enough for you? :P

Any possibility to load this through USB FW-Loader???

Reason:
-Our base-system would be still 3.41-JB for syscalls and unsigned homebrew
-Ability of PSN-Access through USB-loaded-3.55-(PUP/dev_flash)

I know that we need another USB-FW-Loader for that, that allows diffrent versions to be loaded... Anyone an idea???

I saw the post, but i have been told that since there is no evidence, nor public release announced, that it can't really be counted. And i agree with that.

Apparently peek and poke wont work, so its a no for now. Might change in the future.

Reading the above it would appear that you can do the same for 3.41, which means that you can still use the JailBreak to get a Backup Manager running.

Your catching on a bit. But no we still need syscalls i believe. BUT i think i read somewhere that fail0verload are working a on a new system for everything, i'm not sure it was on a report of the congress thingy. But yea for now, its a no go.

What about emulator.They don't require sys calls or peek and poke but no one care at all about those (but me) cuz it's not their beloved GT5 or any other game they downloaded.Where's the love for the emulators?

there is a file called "find_syscall.c". I know its annoying, but could that file not implement those needed syscalls?

ME to, Multiman has the most current and useful app on the scene to date.(With the AVCHD player and possible PS2) but I think he will be the first to sign his multiman app. (I hope app is the correct term) but as long as I am not signed in to the PSN I should be able to watch watch my ACVHD movies off the Hard-drive

I have an important question since I'm a noob. What does this allow you to do and is it like jailbreaking your ps3. Will this let me host mw2 lobbies. I am currently running 3.55 unjailbroken. I want to host mw2 lobbies.

This wont help you at all, it wont let you do any of the above, its still in beta. Give it time.

im having a problem with the update that is on mediafire. when trying to install it, it says no applicable update has been found. any help? oh and also, i even tried renaming the file to PS3UPDATE.PUP and still have the same problem
