PSX-SCENE Forum Discussion for Sony PlayStation/PsOne/PS2/PS3/PSP/PS VITA
  • 3K3Y -- PS3 Blu Ray ODD Emulator

A team by the name of 3k3Y is planning on releasing soon a Blu-Ray optical disk drive (ODD) emulator for the PlayStation 3 video game console. This is a Full hardware mod for the PS3 not a reDRM dongle. From the video below it appears they are gearing up for a 12-12-12 release for this device. It will allows you to store and play 1:1 copies of an ISO. This device will allow you to be on the current Firmwares as well. However you must be on CFW 3.55 only for obtaining/extracting the drive key. After that task is complete & you have the key you are able to be on any firmware (CFW or OFW). However they are said to be working on a hardware solution to obtain the drive key for people who don't have CFW enabled PS3.

    3K3Y :: How It Works

    • 3k3y is an optical disk drive emulator for the Playstation 3 video game console.

    • It is installed between the genuine Bluray drive and the PS3 motherboard.

    • Once 3k3y is successfully installed and configured it can be used to make backups of your original PS3 game disks to USB media, and play those backups from USB media without the need of the original game disk.

    • Several games can be backed up to a single USB media, making it ideal as a 'jukebox' for hardcore gamers as well as for families with children too young to handle bluray discs with appropriate care.

    • 3k3y works with most PS3 models, however there are a few exceptions, most notably the new super slim model and all PS3s which comes with firmware 4.xx (after retrieving the drive key the PS3 can be upgraded to any firmware). We are working to add support for these PS3's but you are adviced to consult with your reseller if you are in doubt whether your PS3 is compatible with 3k3y or not.

    Features

    • Play your PS3, PS2 and PSX games from any USB media!

    • No custom firmware required for operation* - you can update to the latest official firmware for PSN access

    • Integrated game ripper

    • User friendly intuitive interface

    • no soldering required

    • Multi-language support

    • Compatible with both Fat and Slim models

    • Supports most file systems, including NTFS, EXT2/3/4, and Mac OS X Extended

    • High speed USB2 interface

    • Powerful embedded Linux system running from Micro SD card (included)

    • Linux firmware fully updatable from USB media

    • FPGA fully updatable from USB media via built-in, in-system JTAG programming

    • Recovery mode - it is always possible to recover from a bad flash Update your PS3 as normal, no CFW orgame patching required

    • Pass-through mode. (Use your PS3 in "normal mode")

    * Currently firmware 3.55 is required for extracting the drive key. Once the key has been extracted the PS3 can be updated to any official or custom firmware. We are working on hardware methods for extracting keys from PS3's already on 4.x firmware.

Good thing I stayed on 3.55..I did get the True Blue Dongle but I guess I wont be needing that anymore :-) question, since I do have the tb dongle and fixed the majority of my games with that how would I go about making the games work with this ps3key? Is there a limit as to how many games I can have on my external drive? How about updates to games that come from ripping the games from disc do I still need those?
I have the xkey for my XBOX 360 and I LOVE it so if its anything like that then that is great :-)
When they talk about homebrew not working I assume that means MultiMan so how the heck do you play games on it?

It is nice to have a solution just in case however, i agree to that, but it is not something that i would be worrying about today.
If you are handling the disc yourself at every moment of the discs life, then yea you can look after it well. . There are many times when friends/kids/ect.. will pick up the disc and not treat it with as much respect as you would you own. Like i said you purchase the game not the disc.

Expected Life span of a CD-R
"CD-Rs are expected to have an average life expectancy of 10 years"

Now DVDs and Blu Ray disc does have a much longer expected life span, but as i said they dont protect against that person who is using that disc or even taking out the of the PS3.

How many times have you seen someone wanting to put in a movie/disc in your PS3 and you have a disc in. They take the disc out and put it somewhere else not in case. Then you have to search and find it to see that massive scratch that of course messes it up somewhere in the game/video/song.

How many PSone games look like they did when there were first purchased? Sometimes many scratches doesn't affect a disc. but at times there could be one just deep enough or in that special spot where its a nightmare. I know i have came across many CD/DVD/Blu rays. that should work fine but they will fail at some point in the media. Look at rented movies as an example. Im sure everyone has had an issue someplace with a disc.

My point is this device isn't just for pirates. Some people like to protect the investments they have and not even have to worry about taking care of a disc.

you've had a bluray that hasn't played well?

the psx games did not hide scratches very well considering it was black, but blurays, i mean, you can take a pizza cutter, literally, and scratch it across the disc and it will be fine. you have to actually really dig into the disc for problems to arise and then at that point, well, something completely improper was being done to the disc beyond just carelessness of placing a disc wherever.

i will defend blurays through and through. they are the best disc medium we've ever had and not just because of storage capacity. i remember hd-dvd vs bluray and the arguments i had; most opposed bluray and i said, for once, quality will win, e.g. beta losing to vhs. they believed the american market too much, even then i'm pretty sure bluray was always at or near the top.

Try taking that pizza cutter on the label side and tell me how that works out .. I have a Ps3 disc that had a small nic in the label its useless now (maybe i could use it as a coaster lol). No scratches on the disc at all. but you hold it up to the light you can see a very small nic in the label.

No lol, i have it backed up.

Nail polish? Why not spray paint? I'm going to the garage not my gal's makeup bag. .

On Topic: This device is great and all but with it being locked to CFW users as of now, there will not be a huge demand until they have a hardware solution for the drive key.

Stay on CFW and enjoy backups and homebrew (and limited PSN at times) for no fee or enjoy backups with PSN for a fee.

well not really 'like' TB as it actually unlocked functions not normally available but it is limited to as normal CFW with needing the NoDRM/DUPLEX/etc patches

Yep, that is one reason why i never borrow my games or movies to friends. I dont want to get the discs back with scratches, even very tiny ones.

I dont disagree with what you say, i know that such a device could have its usage indeed. I just mean that it will be such a long time before it comes really necessary (when original games discs starts to die). Right now it will become more of a "could-be-nice-to-have" thing, but it is possible to take care of the discs, even with kids in the house. In this way, the device isnt necessary at this point in time. The downside of releasing such a thing now is the piracy issue. Naturally it can be used for piracy even if it was released in 20 years from now, but then all of those games are pretty much out of production.

      @aneesh
How is it a waste when it's a one time fee when 2 new games run you $120. I just bought GOW collection and it was $42 bucks

But you are right though. Mosts of CFW users (mainly all) are pirates so a pirate isn't going to cough up anything close to $100 bucks I mean 25% will but the 75% will complain and wait for a free solution. I would personally get this but I like having a physical copy of my game.

As for the talk about disc talk.... touch the disc by the edges and it will last you a life time.

Exactly, you buy the games primarily for him to enjoy the games now, not primarily to make money of the games selling them years later.

I was just generally speaking earlier. I know that this type of device has it's legit uses as well (as pretty much every "bad/dangerous" things have). But i dont think there are any secret that this will mainly be used for piracy (again, generally speaking, not that everyone will do it).
