  • 3K3Y -- PS3 Blu Ray ODD Emulator

A team by the name of 3k3Y is planning on releasing soon a Blu-Ray optical disk drive (ODD) emulator for the PlayStation 3 video game console. This is a Full hardware mod for the PS3 not a reDRM dongle. From the video below it appears they are gearing up for a 12-12-12 release for this device. It will allows you to store and play 1:1 copies of an ISO. This device will allow you to be on the current Firmwares as well. However you must be on CFW 3.55 only for obtaining/extracting the drive key. After that task is complete & you have the key you are able to be on any firmware (CFW or OFW). However they are said to be working on a hardware solution to obtain the drive key for people who don't have CFW enabled PS3.

    3K3Y :: How It Works

    • 3k3y is an optical disk drive emulator for the Playstation 3 video game console.

    • It is installed between the genuine Bluray drive and the PS3 motherboard.

    • Once 3k3y is successfully installed and configured it can be used to make backups of your original PS3 game disks to USB media, and play those backups from USB media without the need of the original game disk.

    • Several games can be backed up to a single USB media, making it ideal as a 'jukebox' for hardcore gamers as well as for families with children too young to handle bluray discs with appropriate care.

    • 3k3y works with most PS3 models, however there are a few exceptions, most notably the new super slim model and all PS3s which comes with firmware 4.xx (after retrieving the drive key the PS3 can be upgraded to any firmware). We are working to add support for these PS3's but you are adviced to consult with your reseller if you are in doubt whether your PS3 is compatible with 3k3y or not.

    Features

    • Play your PS3, PS2 and PSX games from any USB media!

    • No custom firmware required for operation* - you can update to the latest official firmware for PSN access

    • Integrated game ripper

    • User friendly intuitive interface

    • no soldering required

    • Multi-language support

    • Compatible with both Fat and Slim models

    • Supports most file systems, including NTFS, EXT2/3/4, and Mac OS X Extended

    • High speed USB2 interface

    • Powerful embedded Linux system running from Micro SD card (included)

    • Linux firmware fully updatable from USB media

    • FPGA fully updatable from USB media via built-in, in-system JTAG programming

    • Recovery mode - it is always possible to recover from a bad flash Update your PS3 as normal, no CFW orgame patching required

    • Pass-through mode. (Use your PS3 in "normal mode")

    * Currently firmware 3.55 is required for extracting the drive key. Once the key has been extracted the PS3 can be updated to any official or custom firmware. We are working on hardware methods for extracting keys from PS3's already on 4.x firmware.

This will be interesting although it is for piracy, not homebrew.
Would still be hesitant to move off CFW though as you never know what's around the corner that you may need 3.55 for.

It only works if you're on CFW 3.55. It will NOT run any of homebrew around, nothing. This thing is just for games AND you'll be forced to update to 4.25 if you want to play them all, meaning you cannot downgrade unless you have other HW solution for that. So they are a lot down sides with this stuff.

This device is not just to pirate.

Its protecting your investment as well. Games are expensive and blank disc are very cheap. So when you pay a high price per game and the cheap disc fails. You need devices like this (and backup manager for CFW). to protect what you invest in.

yup the biggest downside to me is now homebrew and now emulators

This is essentially a WODE for the PS3. WODE (Wii Optical Drive Emulator) did the same thing. I really hope this is the same team doing it. I have a WODE (looking to buy a second) and I've loved every second of it. Can't wait to see more.

...and how big is a 1:1 ISO of a bluray disc going to be?

Every game is of a different size. Borderlands 2, for example, is about 7.5GB where as Metal Gear Solid 4 is bigger than 30GB. Since Sony uses a standard disc format, there is no garbage data like the 360 and Wii have. Most computer Blu-Ray drives are capable of reading PS3 Blu-Ray discs now. So I am sure they will come out with something that will do the task. Maybe even add an extraction feature to this device allowing to push some buttons and it will copy the game to the hard drive.

I just hope they come out with an easy plug and play solution of extracting the drive key so everyone can enjoy this device, not just people on CFW.

My current OFW PS3 is the original 60GB PS3 with the PS2 CPU inside it and I'd love to save the Blu-Ray drive as much as possible. Currently I try to buy my PS3 games through PSN so I can save on the drive but I'd rather have the physical disc as who knows when Sony will stop delivering PS3 games through PSN after the PS4 or whatever comes out. Microsoft pulled all original Xbox DLC off Xbox LIVE when they shut that part down. I don't want to loose my investment.

Here's a big question. Could you take someones BD drive on a higher firmware, put it into a CFW console, remarry, dump the key, and then give them their drive back and the key so they could use it in this? If that's the case, you'd just need to know someone w/ CFW

I highly doubt it , because wouldn't they need to remarry it back to there console?

don't think that will work. how are you gonna remarry back to the OFW ps3 after dumping drive key?

would you need to remarry it back? i think you just would use this drive and it would probably auto marry it. idk, i'm not exactly the sharpest marble in the shed

good question as it should be already married to your board, it would be more of a pain for the other guy as he would have to re-remarry his drive

That was my thought process. I don't think you'd need to remarry it back to the original console as it was previously married. And, yes, it'd be a hassle, but less of one then downgrading, getting your key, and then upgrading again. And, much safer.

If one take care of the games, then they wont fail. I've got a CD burned like 15 years ago on cheap no-branded CD that still works fine today, so i'm pretty sure that PS3 games will last for at least 30 years or, or maybe even longer. It is nice to have a solution just in case however, i agree to that, but it is not something that i would be worrying about today.

ask your wee ones to take care of discs is like talking to a brick wall, lol

when i was younger, i took tooth paste to twisted metal 2 and ruined the disc completely. i read somewhere it would fix it
then again, with blu rays, i think the problem is almost moot unless the disc is broken. the disc has quite a few layers of protection no other disc has had before it.
