PSX-SCENE Forum Discussion for Sony PlayStation/PsOne/PS2/PS3/PSP/PS VITA
  • A Tale Of Two Thousand Bricks (And Counting)

Okay, so maybe I'm exaggerating that number but I can speak from personal experience. My CECH-2001A PS3 is among the unlucky bricks after installing one of the new CFW's by BlueDisk or Rogero. It seems that it does not matter what model you have. Right now it's a crap shoot on whether or not you will be among the unlucky paper weight owners.

I've been seeing countless reports of bricks using these new firmwares. Rogero has stated that he is working on an updated version that is safer but nothing is 100% foolproof so take this warning to heart.

IF YOU DO NOT OWN A HARDWARE FLASHER DO NOT INSTALL ANY NEW CFW UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

People should have known that though. With anything that's new (new Windows or Mac OS X, new iOS or Android version, new CFW) there will be bugs in the beginning. That's expected, in my opinion. I'm sorry for the people who bricked their systems and I hope they find a way to 'unbrick' them because I know I'd be more than crushed if my system bricked and I left all those unbeaten games on my system, stranded, lol. I'm sure most people saw "NEW CFW 4.21" and just bungee jumped right in, head first. Didn't even check the suspension cables. Is what it is.

Gonna play a little AC: Revelations later, since I just got around to playing that one
i want to have blu ray playback back, the keys are expired on 3.55 and once you put in a disk with new keys the system fkags the incompatible ones so you cannot watch any of them.

anytime you flash firmware there is a chance for a brick. whether its ofw or cfw a 600 dollar machine or a 20 dollar router. i have a cecha01 was running a cfw from iceman keamu based. and i update from the xmb no recovery just settings update via storage media. was playing borderlands 2 all day yesterday. bout to get down on some re6 and maybe some doom bfg. but word of advice if you never flashed anything before. bricking is always a possibility. no matter what.

Ha! That's funny. How do they decide who gets the brick and who's PS3 updates just fine? Is there some kind of script that does the lottery during CFW installation? ;p I'm very sorry for anyone who bricked their console. It's inevitable with breakthroughs in CFW like this one, but I wouldn't exaggerate the problem. There are thousands of people like me that succesfuly updated their consoles, and are too busy with testing (like playing 2.08 Gran Turismo 5) to actually come to the forum, and mention that everything went fine.

am amongst those patience people who wud wait until a more stable CFW 4.21 is released instead of jumping on without even reading the proper instructions..and SHAME on the people who are blaming the hardworking ROGERO..i salute u bro..keep up the good work..

My CECHA01 with Rogero 4.21 has Showtime working quite nicely (Dean has an update, but I signed the EBOOT myself with the recently released tool)

1 - always take a nand backup of any device you flash (second nature when playing with android)
2 - always use recovery its safer
3 - always use a MD5 checker (A lot of bricks are from corrupted or damaged downloads)
4 - ALWAYS! ALWAYS! READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AT LEAST TWICE BEFORE STARTING ANYTHING! (have spent hours helping people who just missed a simple instruction that was crucial)

ive flashed 5 slims and 7 Phat ps3 all different models and had no issues (actually tell a lie i had a 40gb get pissy after but then its HDD failed and it was fine after a replacement)

honestly i think rogero shouldn't have rushed this cfw...4.21/4.25 cfw(whatever you call it) is a totally brand new stuff to all of us here, as 3.55cfw was only implanted in our brains until this. :P there should have been more testing of every nook and cranny in this firmware before releasing it publicly. we are all humans. so ofcourse people will try to flash this firmware the moment they see it in forums. anyways i mean no disrespect to any one. just saying out loud

I was thinking about purchasing a hardware flasher; I noticed the two main ones are progskeet and the e3 flasher. Any recommendations on which one is overall better for the average user and why?

      Thanks in advance,

depending on your PS3 Model the E3 Is only for NOR PS3 but Progskeet is for both and there are mainly two version of progskeet one is solderless the other is need solder.

So, my brain was divided. Part said 'oh cool, >3.60 CFW at long last!' but another part said 'now now, be patient.'
So i was patient. I waited and I saw 'oh no! my ps3 is bricked!' and I read. The console model numbers that popped up were a bit too close to mine for comfort (mine is a CECH 2503A) and I was glad I waited. Still, I'm looking forward to seeing safer versions come out and finally play some of the ps3 games I've wanted to play.

i did not do anything but copy to update folder and install from xmb after a cold boot from kmew 3.55.
Worked fine. So far each game i have tested works too. Slim 60GB here not sure of model number.
I am sorry if you got a brick but chalk it up to bad luck in general.

So many people who brick and are sad enough that they even don't care posting to tell you so...Other want to help and post their unsuccess experience and other insult them for trying without waiting...If every body wait nothing will happens ! No progress...So think about these so many first adopters that brick and move on without going here to blame cause they are so sad...but hey they do the bad job for you all !

ive been messing with my psvita since exploits came available and its all good so far

i will have a Progskeet and E3 flasher shortly and will be offering unbricking services to uk based memebrs if they need help

Brick (electronics) "In one common sense of the term, "bricking" suggests that the damage, often a misconfiguration of essential on-board software, is so serious as to have rendered the device permanently unusable."
