  • Naehrwert - PS3 HDD Decryption POC

Here is another one of my favorite PlayStation 3 developers. Naehrwert has announced on twitter a proof of concept. This POC involves the decryption of PS3 hard-drives. What does that mean to you? Access to the HDD via your PC.

Is there any advantages of accessing your PS3 harddrive on the PC?

Isn't it same as like to use FTP with multiman?

I suppose faster read/write rates is an advantage of using ps3 hdd on PC.

I guess we could also extract our act.dat and riff files from newer DLC/games, as PSN is off limits for CFW, and maybe some savegame injection (mostly for copy-protected saves)

Plenty of advantages for those with SATA to USB cables or a HDD casing which uses USB as the power source. Means you can take the drive out, back-up the harddrive quicker without FTP connection, add/remove back-up games quicker and easier. For developers, they'll be able to access files faster.

If a perfect image of the drive can be made, shouldn't have any issues with transferring everything to the new/larger drive without having to install the firmware all over again or for those who have a YLOD, can transfer the data from one drive to a new drive without losing anything or having to start over.

These are just guesses and possibilities.

This could also allow OFW ps3's to enjoy free PSN games.

Think this will also allow us to obtain rosters via the hdd? An example being that an OFW system downloads rosters, and we extract from the hdd and copy to other PS3's........would be cool.

i think this is pretty big because i'm sure there is stuff we could really do with this. we could really look at firmwares and stuff

I don't think any part of the firmware is on the hdd, I think it is on the nand/nor chips.

Could we use this to create a "PS3 File System" in a HDD that suports files bigger than 4GB and no longer need to move game backups to internal PS3 HDD?

      easy....

Access the psn games from newest firmwares. i have a RLOD PS3 that have my trophys and savegames. So, for me, with this i can read this files i can recovery to my lost save points.

probably we can mod ofw to add patch and to add other icon like "Install this and open that". Keep up the good work! (alredy have my old 40gb ps3 hdd with 3.6 fw inside)

I get 30MB/s on FTP. Perhaps it would be possible to install any game as "PSN" and it will works on OFW. Who knows?

Yeah, being able to access the PS3 harddrive in case you have a YLOD PS3 might have some advantages indeed.

It is. The first PS3s have 256MB NAND. The PS3 Slims only has 16MB NOR, so parts of the firmware are stored on the harddrive. I'm not sure that it gives much advantage in making CFW etc. though, since you can access the harddrive directly on the PS3 anyway.

so exactly how is a 192MB pup file, gonna be stored on a 16MB NOR chip?

the majority is stored on the hdd.

You don't. If you can't figure it out, it's not ready for you to use.

And to clarify, just decrypting the hdd would render it useless to the ps3. You would have to disable the encryption on the ps3 as well (has been possible for quite some time: http://psx-scene.com/forums/f6/ps3-i...chokolo-83748/ (PS3 Internal HDD Encryption Disabled by Graf_Chokolo)). The real benefit of this would be to recover files from your hdd if you can't have the ps3 decrypt it for you, for whatever reason, or if you wanted to disable the encrption, you could just do so, and decrypt it with this, instead of reformatting.

guys, from the comments it seems most of you hasn't looked at the source code or you just can't read source code (nothing wrong about it). so, let me tell you what i can tell from the source code: it uses "eid_root_key", which as you know is per console key you can obtain now super easy both on 3.41 and on 3.55. so, if you have console with YLOD, RLOD, console on 3.6+ and you don't already have your "eid_root_key" then you can't get the content of your PS3 HDD, i.e. decrypt it on computer.

Would we be able to manually downgrade our ofw ps3s to lower firmware or can we veiw the the hdd while the ps3 is running games. So we can see what's going on internally. This is probably a total noob question. So please for give me.
