  • RetroArch: New Additions PCE, IMAME4all. & Sega CD support

Squarepusher (aka Twinaphex) and Themaister along with other RetroArch contributors have been hard at work. While they are leading up to the release of 0.9.7. We have an unofficial update for the PS3, Thanks to pete_uk and his unofficial compiles.. As i told you before there are some new additions to RetroArch. Today we have two new core and a updated core. The mednafen PCE core has been added to libretro (this brings TurboGrafx-16/TurboGrafx CD/Super Grafx ).Toadking brings IMAME4ALL to the PS3 (via RetroArch), games like MK II, MK III and NBA Hangtime are playing fine. There is also an update to genesis_plus_gx core which brings the version to 1.7. This update is huge as it brings Sega CD support to the PS3 and RetroArch. Please be aware these are WIP builds so some features may be missing and/or not working. Also, check out opium2k's Retro Arch DLC, where you can find tons of different skins for this great app.

    RetroArch - Commit 2a9441d411425fd578d00d5ed4b030c3b8a373b3
    Included Cores:

    Snes9x Next - Super Nintendo
    FCEU_MM - Nintendo Famicom / NES
Gambatte - Gameboy & Gameboy Color
    VBA Next - Gameboy Advance
    Final Burn Alpha - Arcade
    PR-Boom - Doom, Doom 2 etc.
(NEW!) Genesis-Plus-GX 1.7 - Sega Genesis / Megadrive, Master System, Game Gear & Sega CD / Mega CD
(NEW!) iMame4All - Arcade (Based on Mame 0.37b5)
    (NEW!) Mednafen_PCE - NEC PC-Engine / Turbo Grafix 16

    Bugs & Issues

iMame4All and Mednafen_PCE are WIP and some bugs / issues do exist.
With both of these cores, they will crash if you try to load a ROM while a ROM is running. To get round this issue, when you want to change the game / ROM, Press R3 then select "Change Libretro Core" and reselect the core.
Save States are also not working on iMame4All and Mednafen_PCE at the moment.

If you find any other bugs, please report them in this thread.

    Notes:

PR-BOOM - Requires PRBOOM.WAD (link) in the same same folder as your doom WAD file.

Final Burn Alpha - Based on version 0.2.97.26. Make sure you have the right ROMs or you will have problems.

Genesis-Plus-GX - Sega CD Emulation requires a sega cd bios in the same folder as your ISO / BIN files. The BIOS ROM files be named bios_CD_J.bin (Japan), bios_CD_U.bin (US) and bios_CD_E.bin (Europe)

Mednafen_PCE - PCEngine / Turbo Grafix CD Emulation requires the BIOS to be in the same folder as the ROM you are trying to load. It needs to be named SYSCARD3.PCE

iMame4All - Based on Mame Version 0.37b5, again make sure you have the right romset.

**IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT BIOS AND CD PLAY**

All bios files need to be placed in /dev_hdd0/game/SSNE10000/USRDIR/cores/system

For Sega CD the bios files must be named **EXACTLY** like listed below

    European BIOS
    bios_CD_E.bin

    Japanese BIOS
    bios_CD_J.bin

    USA BIOS
    bios_CD_U.bin

As of right now I've only tested 2 bios files from the No-Intro set. The first is 1.00 which is the very first model and the second is 2.11X which is from the very last model. Don't ask where to get them from and I won't have to BS you. Google is your friend

Unfortunately, CD Audio Track support is not working 100%. I loaded Sonic CD and can play the game flawlessly, but the soundtrack does not play. I will check other games later tonight. It could be related to the PREGAP line in the CUE sheet. Not all games will use that line.

It has been suggested that loading BIN/CUE files by selecting the CUE file will break the emulator causing you to need to reinstall. I have not run into that problem yet. I believe it's due to the CUE sheet containing a line at the very top containing the word CATALOG. Some programs add this line but it is completely unnecessary. Make sure your CUE file contains only lines starting with FILE, PREGAP, TRACK, or INDEX. You can edit it with any text editor like notepad. You should also make sure that the file line points to the **EXACT** name of the BIN file. Case is important!!

Well I tried Bonk III since that was confirmed working and it works. What's weird is it works from both external and internal. Unfortunately I couldn't get the other game (Neo Nectaris) working from either. I'm going to test a few more games and see what happens..

OK guys - I did manage to rip all the audio tracks for Sonic CD and it's playing flawlessly. Original file size was 573 megs. New size minus all the CD audio (not gameplay sound effects) is 115 megs. This should work for all Sega CD games drastically reducing the file space requirements. Remember that if/when CD audio support is added to the emulator you'll need to get fresh roms/cd images.

You will need bin_to_cso_mp3.exe which is contained in Picodrive. You can find that on dl.qj.net. You'll probably also need LAME so the program will run without errors. In command prompt type bin_to_cso_mp3 -i (name of cue) (name of new set).

      Example

      bin_to_cso_mp3 -i "Sonic CD.cue" "Sonic Fixed"

Once the program starts converting the audio tracks you can hit ctrl-c to stop the program. The only file you need from the new set is the ISO file. You will rename that with a BIN extension instead and load it up in the emulator.

It's late and I'm done for the night but if something doesn't make sense I'll explain better tomorrow. Just let me know what you're stuck on. I've got around 70 gigs of Sega CD disc images. I think it would be safe to say that could be cut down to around 5-10 gigs

      @BahumatLord

Here's the supported file extensions for Genesis-Plus-GX - Libretro port :

      md|smd|bin|cue|gen|zip|MD|SMD|bin|CUE|GEN|ZIP|sms| SMS|gg|GG|sg|SG

It looks like Square must have missed ISO of the supported list, but as you only had to rename your ISO to BIN, the core must accept ISO files.

I will have a play and try adding ISO's to the supported extensions. I think I only have to edit one file by the looks of it......

One last thing. Here is a bat file to automate the process. It was thrown together very quickly so it's not perfect. It is very important that your cue file matches your bin file exactly or you're going to have problems. This will convert the file using bin_to_cso_mp3. It will delete all unneeded files and delete the original files as it goes so you don't have to worry about running out of hard drive space. If you use the command at the bottom it will process every cd image in that directory

      Code:
      @echo off
      bin_to_cso_mp3 -i -w %1 "%~n1"
      del "%~n1\*.wav"
      del "%~n1\*.cue"
      del %1
      del "%~n1.bin"
      ren "%~n1\%~n1_01.iso" "%~n1.bin"
      move "%~n1\%~n1.bin" .
      rd "%~n1"
it is advised to save this file as SegaCDFIX.BAT in your windows directory. You should also put bin_to_cso_mp3 files and LAME files in there too or add their directories to your system path. You will then navigate to where your Sega CD images are and type the following

for %f in (*.cue) do SegaCDFix "%f"

@pete_uk - I'm pretty sure ISO and BIN files are identical. Just named different.

Edit: fixed bat - increased speed. Removed conversion to mp3

I always thought that BIN files are a single track and a ISOs are multi track. That's why you normally need a CUE file to go with your .BIN?
    1. BahumatLord's Avatar
      BahumatLord -
ISOs are usually single track and BINs are multi-track. The cue file for the bin points to the tracks stored in the file. I know that they are often interchangeable like they are here once converted to single track iso's. I'm converting all my disc images now. Here's a sample of what's been done so far. you can see how big of a file size drop it's been so far

If it still has music and the disc image isn't a BIN/CUE or a MDF/MDS or a CCD/IMG/SUB or a CDI (or NRG) or hell, even a GDI file set, then it isn't a mixed-mode CD (meaning that the game must have the music saved in a certain (possibly proprietary) file format).

Having said that though, CDI and NRG files are "cue-sheet" independent (illud est: don't need cue-sheets to "point out" the audio-side of the disc image), whereas Media Descriptor Files (.MDF) need a Media Descriptor Sheet (.MDS - basically acts as the cuesheet), and the CloneCD file set needs a cuesheet as well (.CCD extension - .IMG = main image file and .SUB = subchannel data).

Yeah, thank god they didn't use CD audio on that game. It would have been completely unplayable for me. It was one of my favorite games at the time it came out on Sega CD. The soundtrack made the game on this version of it

      It's a BIN/CUE There's over 500MB of files.

Oh, forgot to say ripping those games dropped the file size from just under 70 gigs to around 30. Here's a list. You'll see a lot of 5-20 meg roms. Average drop was around 300 megs per game except the ones that were all FMV. These are all playable

Yup - I just found out now, but it has a 4-second "silent track" when I mounted it onto Daemon Tools.

Yup just noticed - with most game-based disc images released around the advent of the "mixed-mode CD" era (1990s-2000/2001), they're dumped using the non-ISO-based disc image format (forgot to add this, so kill me - I also remember acquiring a Sonic CD ISO+MP3 set when I was using Kega Fusion at one stage, so there are some exceptions to the rule).

lolz, some of those sizes just prove that they're just genesis with audio tracks added :P

anyways, bug/error report time! Amazing Spider-Man vs Kingpin doesn't seem to work for me after the opening video even if i try to skip the video, start fresh again, etc. Snatcher froze for me after talking to chief (like the first time; idk if you talk to him again, i haven't played the game in forever).

Also, i'm not sure, since i only had a few hours before i really needed to sleep, but idk if the ram file (the separate one, not internal) actually keeps the file. I saved once, but when i loaded another game and even in the main system menu, it said there was nothing on that ram.

Oh, and popful mail seems to have audio in the game! I really wanted to play that game and i'm glad almost everything is in tact.

Some videos seem to jitter a bit when playing, but nothing too bothersome since it's the first time it's supported.

I'm not gonna take out audio files since i feel like audio is gonna be supported soon and it'll just be a hassle to get them all back to normal. I will probably separate the audio files though and change them to OGG to save space.

When i talk burn to disc, i mean actually make the disc playable even on sega cd. That'd be kinda cool if it was supported, but if compressed OGG is supported, then i wouldn't need that at all

Yeah, I'm sure audio will be supported soon. I only posted that info for people that are stretched for hard drive space and still want to check this stuff out. When CD audio support is added, the original disc images will have to be re-obtained.

I ended up keeping my original disc images but I've got over 2 Terabytes of space dedicated to my PS3. Not everybody has that luxury. Hopefully it won't be long. Some of these games were a hell of a lot of fun.

Oh how i'd love that much room. I need money :P

I'm pretty stretched for disc space, but i'm trying to deal with it. I'm compulsive and so afraid to delete stuff thinking that after a few years, i'll want to still use it :P One thing that takes up a lot of room for me that i won't ever get rid of (cause i have faith) is the complete n64 goodset. I'm pretty sure it's not even just US releases, i've got japan and euro releases.

Oh yeah, retroarch should try to add 7zip support. The compression on that is great especially if you have each region's release in one file.

I just love the System Of A Down Midi music playing in the background. Give me old school midi over mp3 any day

i'm noticing a lot of troubles now with sega cd but that might be because i just installed it over my old retroarch to see if it worked and it did. so, i might just do a complete reinstall. i just get tired of redoing the settings.

well, first off, it seems most games will eventually give a black screen. i think it's the games with cd audio because popful mail seems to play near perfect. sonic cd does have some slight slowdown when changing times (like someone mentioned).

so, spider-man, i got a little further, but i just can't get into the main game (i can be spider-man for the first part, which is just hitting a bad guy). I've tried watching the video, skipping the video, etc and it just freezes on the map (the emulator, not the whole system). In sonic cd, i passed a few levels, then it black screened. I mean, it's not terrible because of save states, just annoying and i can see it being fixed.

Also, in sonic cd, i somehow got a song playing in the background when i was in the past; idk if it was just genesis sounds or actual cd audio. It did go away when i got the invincibility power-up but then came back after it.

A lot of games just seem to freeze or lock up on me eventually. I'm sure maybe popful would, but it's just a damn hard game that i can't get that far in it to really even see. Although, i did watch the videos and stuff and the game kept playing unlike spider-man.
