PSX-SCENE Forum Discussion for Sony PlayStation/PsOne/PS2/PS3/PSP/PS VITA
  • Donate For The Cause! Help SKFU Get A VITA Devkit

The things that developers are able to contribute to the scene, whether it may be homebrew or just general knowledge, can go a long way. The end users who are the everyday people like you and I, benefit in some way or another. While donations and [positive] feedback are not necessary, it is all appreciated by the devs. SKFU who is known for his work such as VITA Pr0xy, is asking for help to raise funds for a devkit for the handheld.

Here's what SKFU had to say regarding the matter:

In the PlayStation3 scene, the progress went much easier since development kits and testkits are available to several developers. In the PS VITA scene there is no such kit available to any developer, yet...

With a PS VITA DevKit we will have the same advantages which the PS3 kits brought due 2008:

    - file system access
    - unsigned code execution
    - debugger possibility
    - etc etc etc

To enhance the speed of the VITA research a development kit would help A LOT as you know. The kit will be shared with all trusted VITA developers so anyone has a piece of the cake to use it for the work done for you - the community.

The necessary sum is 2000€ which is:
    1,900€ - devkit itself
    100€ - shipping costs
    Source: SKFU's Blog

It's a hefty price tag but are you guys willing to come together to support the cause? Even if you donate 1€, it goes a long way. That makes 2,000 people and I'm sure that there's more than enough people who are willing to donate more than that. Look at where the VITA is now, without a devkit. Imagine where it could be with access to one. Think about it. If you want to pitch in, you can donate by clicking the Paypal button below.

Looks like you have to visit the source to donate. No other way that I see to obtain a link. In the mean time, I will contact SKFU and see if he can get us a link.

Why is he asking donation for the full price? He should chime in himself as well, in my opinion.

And on his website it says "Vita developers". €2000 isnt really THAT much money, so if there are several of people who are together about this, they should easily be able to afford it themself. And what will happen if he only gets i.e €700 in donation?

FYI, using paypal in this method is against PayPal's Acceptable Use Policy and can cause them to lock the paypal account and even issue fines for each case of violation (donation). Something very similar just happened to my buddy in the wii scene.

Apparently paypal is on a crackdown kick right now so you guys might want to rethink this through before you guys get screwed the same way that my buddy did.

Well, it is all relative. Compared to the price for a pack of bubblegum, €2000 is a lot, sure. Compared to the price of a new house, it is not that much.

But in Germany, where SKFU is from i think, €2000 is not concidered as a lot of money on its own in general. I think that the average monthly pay for a normal job in German is around €2000 a month (before taxes, but still).

It is a decent amout of money of course, i'm not saying anything against that, but it is not like €2000 breaks the bank or anything like that, at least not in Germany. If there are several of developers behind this, they should have no problem covering the costs themself, or at least a bigger part of it. Assuming that they have jobs. If they dont have that, then it is a bit more difficult. But still, i dont know why they ask for the full amount. This way it can look like they are not willing to chime in even €1 from themself.

Would you prefer they pay for it themself and release some kind of DRM hardware/software for the vita instead of donations?

No, but there is no reason to do this. There is also the option to pay for it themself, or at least pay for a bigger part of it, and release it for free. If they go together, they dont have to break the bank to be able to afford this.

It completely depends on what motive they have being this, to make money or release it for free for everyone. The companies that release and sell those PS3 dongles does it to make money, not to cover some cost they have.

A software DRM solution would most likely be cracked very fast anyway.

But people donate if they want to of course. I'm not here to complain about that. I just find it a bit questionable that they asks for the full amount through donation, that is all. It could simply be something that they didnt think of, but someone should ask them if they are going to cover something themself

If SKFU had ever charged for what he's put out then yes, I'd say he needs to pay for it himself, but since that's not the case and everything he's done has been 100% free for the masses, then a fundraiser to buy a devkit is not that farfetched.

I'm not seeing the logic where he should pay for it himself (or the bigger part), yet still give it away. People want to benefit from this kind of thing and get it entirely for free but can't be bothered to shell out a few bucks to help the cause. I don't own a vita and don't plan on getting one, but if I did, then throwing him $10-20 would be a small price to pay to get things moving

WOW!! It seems like everyone overlooked what I said. I hope that a few of you take what I said into consideration and fix this before it becomes a huge mess. All it takes is for one person to donate $1 and then bitch about it to paypal and then they investigate it and see that the donations was going towards something that would be considered illegal in at least one country and they freeze the funds and start taking those fund to pay against their 'fine'.

I hope you people smarten up about this quickly. No one needs the BS of paypal to put an end to a potentially good thing..... once again.

nobody overlooked what you said. There is always going to be somebody that wants to piss in the cornflakes and call it breakfast. Wouldn't a simple fix for that be that every $100 he transfers to another account?

I'm not saying that SKFU should fork out €2000 from his own pockets alone. But the blog post he wrote is signed with "Vita developers", indicating that there are more people behind this than SKFU alone.

Regarding the logic, this is how i see it: SKFU says "hey, please give me all the money needed to buy a PS Vita dev kit, and maybe i can hack it". That he asks for the whole amount is the only reason why i bring this up. If he had said something like "i want to try to hack the Vita, but i cant afford to buy a PS Vita dev kit on my own, it would be nice to get some help through donation", it would seem much more humble, in my opinion.

No offence to SKFU at all, but as far as i know, he doesnt have any track record of doing some hacking that have led to some breakthrough. So we have an "unknown" guy asking for people to buy him a PS Vita dev kit, while he doesnt want to chime in even €1 himself.

It could be that i'm reading more into it than necessary though. I understand the donation thing and all that. It is just that when i first saw this, an "unknown" guy asking for the full amount for a PS Vita dev kit, it rubbed me the wrong way a bit. But again, maybe i'm reading too much into this

Yeah, sure. Say that to paypal and see where it gets you. My buddy said things in a lot better way and they are still crawling up his ass. My buddy actually has had to hire a lawyer because of this crap and the lawyer is rather pessimistic that my buddy will be able to solve this outside of court.

I'd say to take this as a great heed of caution. As much as I love saying "I told you so", once I do say that then it is too late for the other dude.

Honestly, if I were you guys I would take down that whole post, but too bad it is already cached by google, yahoo, and about 500 other companies. At least try to fix it before PayPal fully breaks it and breaks the finances of the other dude.
