I have heard of a belief that is allerged to be circulating in my local PS2 modding community that 1/3 of PS2s will have lens problems after a mod job. To what extent is this true? What are the likely causes for lens to perform poorly (boot up failures) after a mod job if such an assumption is justified?

i guess your community is still using the neo2.2
nowadays messiah2 if the laser ok before u install the chip it will be ok when its installed
all ps2 lasers will weaken and die wether they are chipped or not,how long this takes depends on luck, did u get good laser unit or a bad 1 :)

unfortunately, such an instance was brought about by Messiah 2 original and clone modding. My Pal set was modded with M2 Pro, unstable unless I turn my PS2 upside down, and later remodded with another M2 Pro, same problem, with M2 clone, also same problem. And I got the feedback from the shop that did the modding "1/3 of PS2s being modded will have this problem".
Can someone explain? thanks in advance folks!

yes so the 1 in 3 are old ps2 and the lasers are warn already
when chipped installed then is the need to read dvdr and cdr,cdr and dvdr are harder for the laser to read so it struggles
use good dvdr media ie traxdata(ritek dark purple dye) older lasers read these well, cheaper inferior media will struggle for sure
no damage is caused by the mod
damage is casue by reading weak media after it's modded umm and most of the early ps2 have laser probs v1-v4

will they read original dvd games? If not, then the lasers are really screwed.
u can adjsut it or buy a new one

the above reasoning are pretty sound save for one factor I forgot to tell you folks...
My PS2 was modded twice (once with a swap mod and the other with original Messiah) before and not once did the lens go weak. If inferior media is the culprit, how does one explain the first 2 times where my PS2 was working fine with backups?
Certainly I won't say the modchip is the cause of my PS2 troubles. Since I have had a 10 screw set modded with M2 Pro and it is "rock stable" as many can attest.
The randomness involved with the failure rate of 33.33% is kind of weird?
Any other reasoning folks? Thanks again!
well alot of those bad laser models were v4

my set is a V5/6 model as it has the tell tale screw.
