I hope it's on a DVD-R and not a DVD+R or DVD+RW...
Do I need a mod chip,
Yes
gameshark,
Depends on the modchip you choose or whether you want to use cheat codes later
or what??
Take some time and read through the various threads and you'll find your answer
Thanks everyone

LOL! Do you need a knife, manicured credit card, or a paper clip and a hole drilled in the side of your PS2? YES
Will you eventually mangle the drive tray gearing in your PS2? YES
WIll you be wishing you had just bought a decent modchip? YES

I'll leave emoney to explain the fine art of sticking things into your PS2... ;)

hole drilled on the side of ur ps2?? lol u don't need that

i use the "knife" trick (with a credit card) and have been for a long time now, tho im sure a mod chip does a lot less wear and tear on ur ps2, i am just a cheap mo' fo' who refuses to buy a mod chip (i don't wanna solder anway, and the non-solder 1 seems cheap and doesnt do anything the knife trick doesn't)

"non-solder 1 seems cheap and doesnt do anything the knife trick doesn't"

your right it is cheap...but it does do something the knife swap doesn't-----IT SAVES YOUR PS2!!!!

Also, it is a heck of a lot easier to push a button for 3 seconds then fussing with forcing that guidepin around it's track. Not to mention, if you get a newer GS2, you may not get a spindown for DVD Swapping without using the "Updating Codes" trick--which means you have to do the swap in a bit of a hurry, which can stress the tray mechanics even more than you would with a CDR swap.

YOU may not be having problems with the knife/Card trick, but OTHERS might. All it takes is a little too much stress on the guidepin's track, and you can monkey up the drive tray. You could also knock loose the two grommets that help to stabilize the front end of the drive tray. Not a major problem, unless you get a batch of poorly balanced media one day. And let's not forget the undo stress on the gears and motor that drive the tray--they're designed to withstand force in the opposite direction from how you force the tray with the knife/credit card trick. Remember also the recent pricedrops? Eventually, Sony will start to cut some corners to restore it's profit margin again--that means lower guality parts, which may break even easier.

Come on, the NTSC v5/v6 no solder mod's only cost $9.99 plus $5.00 S/H in the US. I think it is a worthwhile investment compared to what it could cost if you have to replace PS2 Parts one day.

Oh, and did I mention they are extremely reliable, and my 6 yr. old nephew can even load backups with the no solder mod? I think that is a strong argument in itself for simplicity's sake!
