Hi All,
I have tried using PSMS and it just wont work. I followed all the tutorials on the net and when I insert the disc in my PS2 it will say invalid disc. If I override that and boot into ESR it will hang on a black screen after the splash/logo. If I open the CD in uLE it says there is nothing on the disc.
I burned in Nero using the following settings:
CD-Rom(UDF/ISO)
File name length:Max. of 11=8+3 chars(level 1)
Mode 2/XA
Character set: ISO9660 (standing ISO Cd-rom)
And made sure all the boxes were unchecked.
All ROMS are in 8.3 format and the text file is correct as I used Simple PEFU to do this.
I burned the discs at 8x 4x and 48x but still no luck and that was a Vertabim CD-R. I also tried other media and still no luck.
After using the above method didnt work I tried making an ISO with above settings and patching it with ESR patcher and then burning it but still no luck.
I am really lost as to why it isnt working.
Any ideas?
Cheers Jess
ESR only works with DVDs and if you do not have a modchip, you're not able to play any CD-Backups&Discs directly this way.

So theoritically if i burned it to DVD in the same method rather than CDR it would boot.
Cheers.

You might want to give a bit more info. Most PS2 games are DVD but some are CD (like ICO)...
In either case, do you have a method to boot from a burned disc, like a modchip or Swap Magic?

Yes, it should. But you would also have to remember to use the ESR patcher on the generated ISO before burning that image to a DVD-R disc. Only discs patched that way can be booted through ESR.
I have myself used PSMS on an emulator collection DVD-R I made, for booting with ESR, but since this was a collection of several emulators it used uLaunchELF as the main boot file, as that is the tool I normally use for launching other homebrews. So I never tried it with PSMS as the main boot file, but that too will probably work fine.

He was not speaking of commercial games but about a specific homebrew emulator called PSMS. I have used this program myself, so I know that it does work for accessing a DVD to load the emulation ROM files.

Since he was able to launch ESR he should have what is needed, though I'm not sure if he also has FMCB, on whose CDVD initialization I think ESR still relies for some of its functionality.

Thanks Dlanor.
So would i need to create an ISO using the same method as I mentioned, then patch it using ESR, then burn to DVD and boot using ESR?
If i dont patch it and just use uLE to boot the PSMS.elf would this still work?
BTW i have FMCB.

That would be the best method.

If you have the PSMS elf stored on some other media (MC, USB, HOST) which uLE can access, then sure, uLE can launch PSMS from that place. But PSMS is only able to browse MC and CDVD, and access to a DVD-R disc will fail unless you patch it for use with ESR. So without patching and burning a disc for ESR you will have to load the ROM files from a folder on the memory card.
BTW i have FMCB.
I assumed as much, but that doesn't change anything I said in regard to PSMS.

Excellent stuff,
Well I will try burning and patching to a DVDR and see how I go.
Thanks for all your help!

I would recommend PSMS Reloaded, which can load roms from any device:
