View Full Version : Tutorial: Play ESR games through PS2Browser

Update: The latest FMCB version will pretty much make this obsolete with the ability to load ELF files from OSDSYS/ps2browser. :)
It'll be simpler in that respect and more versatile.
I just whipped together a crude tutorial based on redeyed's findings to boot ESR patched PS2 games directly from the PS2Browser and not having to load the elf files through a different loader like uLaunchELF.
http://www.aoinamida.com/fmcbesr/esrdvdplayer.html
The tutorial was made intending installation from scratch.
I tried to give the best credit that I could, however if I'm missing credit where credit is due, let me know and I will fix it.

Nice tutorial!
But.....
No luck here :(
It just doesn't want to work.
The part of installing FMCB is no problem.
-I copied the osdmain.elf to USB stick renamed it to dvdplayer.elf
-Place it in the folder BEEXEC-DVDPLAYER (i have PAL console) with all other files.
-Copied the whole folder to MC and deleted the BEEXEC-SYSTEM folder.
-Checked the BOOT folder, it contains the neccesary BOOT files.
Then when i restart the PS2 it goes to browser screen. Just like what you get if FMCB wasn't installed at all. I've checked the DVD version and it's still the same old version.
I have tried it 4 times already. I have no clue what i did wrong.
Edit: Oh yeah, it's a V7 PAL that i am using. Tutorial says V5 and newer should work fine.

It may have to do with the dvdplayer.id and dvdplayer-e.ver files. Try changing the letter in those files to what your DVD Version is. 4.32U -> 4.32x. It may be because the PAL system doesn't want to recognize it. Also make sure that the version in the files is higher than your actual DVD Player version.
Edit: I would think this works with PAL consoles, but I am not certain since I am unable to test it myself. :(
Also, I am not sure if it matters or not, but you can try deleting the dvdplayer-j.ver file since it's intended for Japanese consoles.

so basically it will autoboot burn patch game without pressing R1?
lets say i have ulunch for ''BOOT.ELF''. i hit X button to goto browser, put in burn patch game and it will boot the game to ESR?

If you have uLaunch for BOOT.ELF, it'll load uLaunch when you stick the burned patched game in the ps2. That's why you want ESR as the default BOOT.ELF. I mean you can switch the files in my tutorial and have uLaunch as BOOT.ELF and ESR as BOOT1.ELF and hold R1 to load ESR when the disc is detected, but the way I described just seems easier especially for those with a slim ps2.

so why did u make this tut....
all you had to write was have ESR.ELF as BOOT1.ELF and hold R1 when you insert the game.
you dont have to miss with the dvdplayer files

Who wants to hold R1 every time they want to load a game? I'd rather just stick the game in and walk away so when I come back the game is up and running. ;)
Also this way is idiot-proof if someone other than yourself is going to load the games, like a friend or child. All you have to do is tell them to stick the game in and let it go.

well then have it as BOOT.ELF!! no need for this stupid thread!
bootleninja has made a thread.
hmmm you just want attention dont you..
you must be lonely..
this thread is garbage. you do NOT have to miss with the dvd files to play burn games just freaking boot up ESR!!!

A few things I have to say.
1. Please don't drag me into this.
2. My tutorials don't cover this, which is why it's here.
3. Site rules are in place stating no flaming.
4. Knock it off.
5. I suggest you two make ammends.
6. Go on your daily routines as if this arguement never happend.

I would normaly not choose to continue this but files21 seems to be missing that doing this essetually replaces the bult in DVD player with ESR causeing ESR disks to be loaded from the Ps2's orginal browser as you would a real Ps2 game. Makeing its a bit closers to the funtion of a real modchip.
I cannot understand why someone would not get why people would want to do that. I personally do not have interest in doing so but I get it.
It has the drawback of makeing it less conventent to play DVD movies in the ps2 but I do not recamend doing so anyway.

Exactly. This way gives full access to the PS2Browser before loading a game, retail or backup, and the original idea by redeyed was created before FMCB1.5 was released which has the osdsys hack, so this method may not be as ideal anymore. However, loading ESR as BOOT.ELF with FMCB normally requires the game disc to be inserted beforehand. This way, ESR launches when the disc is inserted.

Thanks. That did the trick. By changing the 4.32U in the dvd files to 4.32E.
Other question is: do we always need a DVD in the drive for booting up other .ELFs except ESR? Otherwise it doesn't work.
This method surely makes it like a real bootup on a modchipped PS2.
Yes, as described in FreeVast Continues-Thread.
Nice tutorial.
If others will use older FMCB-Loaders, they can also use it in a vary of combinations.
I did this method also a bit time ago with uLE and PS2Browser.elf.
This might work with an external (optional ESR-File [<-- Find a workaround, to start decrypted ELF. ])

This method, yes you will need a patched dvd in the drive to load other elf files. This isn't really the best way for a fat ps2, but it's one of the better solutions for a slim. (I have 2 fat ps2s and I use HDLoader for them.)

hello everybody,
sorry for my badly english
i have a question........
i want to made a memory card with this method, but i want to use the "multi vesrion install" because i have a ps2 fat and my friend have a pstwo
is that possible to make this one??
is the method the same as the "normal installation"?
thanx for the answer
The method here doesn't rely to the multi-version-issue.
If you name the "osdmain.elf", which is encrypted to your region, like the tutorial says, it works.
Please read,...

As TnA says, you don't have to worry about using the multi version if your ps2 and your friends are the same region.

I'd rather have an extra option in the ps2 browser to load
DVD Player
erom0:DVDELF
then sign esr directly as B?EXEC-DVDPLAYER/dvdplayer.elf instead of osdmain.elf / osd???.elf "FMCB with embedded key launcher" that way if you plonked in a patched esr dvd-v it'd load B?EXEC-DVDPLAYER/dvdplayer.elf and if you wanted to play a normal dvd-v you'd just put one in at the ps2 browser screen and select it from the browser menu.

Even I get you wrong, or this is not possible, the way you described.
When,... It needs additional Browser-Hacks.
The DVD-Player from ROM searches for the update on MC and if found, it execute it instead of the one from ROM.
I also thought about the encrypted ELF before, but there is a better way.
kevstah2004

In that case couldn't you use this instead
DVD Player
B?EXEC-DVDPLAYER/dvd_update.elf - The original cdrom update dvdplayer.elf renamed, unencrypted then signed with any magic gate id somebody must have an legit update disc with a proper update elf on their mc that they can decrypt with hdprojectx which everybody could then sign with their magic gate id.
and
Emded ESR into osdmain.elf then rename it as dvdplayer.elf.
So,... It's almost ready, afaik...
But in a other way,...
@Jimmi: Sweet! I didn't installed it yet, but what I could see from the new CNF,... :D
Jippie,... ^^

Allow me to translate.
He means the new version of FMCB.
Look at FreeVast Continues-Thread.
We can load ELFs from OSDSYS/PS2Browser. :)
@Bootleg: :p :D
Like I said,... The people should read,...
Just wanted to say thanks for this tutorial. It, alongside a little innovation on my part [more like blind experimenting, hurrr.] lets me use raw codes/boot imports without ever having to swap a disc. :3
o: Well, that is until the new FMCB comes out, then I can just launch the coder elf from the browser. This is an awesome substitute 'til then though.
Kudos.
