Figured this might help some of you:

Free McBoot 1.3c install instructions:


-Place the Free McBoot 1.3c.elf on a USB stick along with a BOOT folder containing the BOOT.ELF you intent to use.
-Make sure there is no BOOT.ELF file on the root of the USB stick or it will get injected by the installer. So far this has resulted in a black screen with uLaunchELF.
-Run the installer ...format if you wish then press X to install. Wait for the installer to say its finished then press triangle to exit {puts ps2 in standby mode}or just restart the console.


As long as you have placed /BOOT/BOOT.ELF on the USB stick, it will load that BOOT.ELF since the loader looks on the USB first.



-Now all you need to do is copy the BOOT.ELF to the BOOT folder created on the MC by the installer.



Once done you can remove the USB stick and the MC will boot without it. Now you dont need a PS1 disc , USB or anything else to boot the app you chose as your BOOT.ELF.

It's absolutely fine ;) . Don't worry, I'm not going to hide it from you or something like that. It's just that I wouldn't like to release a failure, even as public beta.

Right now it simply works. I launch uLE, then a little 13.7kB file and the game starts. Some color flashing on the screen occurs during the IOP resets and that's the only difference comparing to running the original game. Currently I do not have any game that wouldn't work with it (well... one has some sound issues - ICO, but I'm working on it), but there are still some tests in progress (me and three other persons).

As for the release. There will be gui version... This will give some choice like launching game in drive, lauching browser (with or without dvdv support) or some application (mc, mass, maybe hdd... with or without dvdv support). It will also give you the ability to force ESR to disable itself after first IOP reset (something like mode3 in hdloader). There will also be the direct boot version, that we currently use for testing (some users might prefer it... especially that it will be small in size - perfect to be stored on mc).

Anyway, it's more or less complete. I just recently rewrote the EE resident code, so it needs some more testing to verify if it didn't negatively affect compatibility (current tests results prove it didn't). It was necessary to make some hacking protected games to work properly (like Star Ocean Till the End of Time).

So if everything will work fine, then I'll try to publish it somewhere in the middle of this week.... but don't count too much on this ;) . (well, I wrote it's far superior to memento... true, it launches games that memento refuses to launch, there is no fmv stuttering problem in any game, but I have to make sure before release that ESR doesn't have some simple flaws that would make it not work with some games... so intensive testing pending).

I don't know if "better", but surely "independent". This patching application is so simple, that anyone can write one in few minutes. The tests are now finished, so I'll try to put few words together and publish ESR today or tomorrow (just the direct launch version... the gui one with few options will have to wait due to some problems I'll describe later).

Each backup game disc needs to be patched like for the Memento software.
Currently the Memento patcher is the only available tool for this, but ffgriever will probably make his own patcher, to make the project independent of other softwares.

will it take double boot dvd games like the ones that boot network and then the game it self It is intended to have that ability, but that still remains to be seen. But even if it fails to do this in the first release, I am certain that ffgriever can fix it quickly.

Other games that use multiple elf launching, such as KH2 does for the gummi ship missions (thus not working on HDL), have been tested with ESR with that feature working fine.
