This thread is useless as it works on ALL consoles.
It's just that the save HAS to be for the Magic Gate REGION the console is and be signed to the memory card.
Also, the Magic Gate region is not really related to GAME region.
Now a useful thread would be "Working 3rd party memory cards"
Just fyi all HORI memory cards should work because they use SONY chips.

Interesting note (not sure if it's a bug in ulaunchelf 4.12 plus or in Free MCBoot):
it does not boot on my V14 with Disc control enabled in ulaunchelf (PS2 hangs on black screen), turning disc control off and accessing the drive will not freeze the PS2, though. Also, Disc Control does not freeze the PAL V4, only the V14

"Hangs on a black screen" That's a problem with the "RUNME.ELF" file on the release. seems like it doesn't work well for everyone. I replaced it with another RUNME.ELF. Try to replace the one on your MC with this one.
"Hangs while flashing" Your memory card flash memory has a bad block. Try another card. If you're skilled enough with a soldering iron, peel the flash out and replace it with another (compatible) chip from some other device.
None of these issues have anything to do with "compatibility".

V1.2
Works:
-PS2 v.5 PAL
And one think i noticed on ICE based chips, i have ICE magic final installed, and Free MCBoot wont work unless i disable the chip(4sec hold stby), and reboot(one click stby).
If i dont disable it, the screen just umh.. rolls or something, looking like it tries to boot from MC endlessly.

I replaced the RUNME.ELF from 1.1 with RUNME.ELF from 1.2 (someone posted it on another thread) No luck, still black screen.

How can you know about bad blocks? Is there some tool to check them?

I replaced the RUNME.ELF from 1.1 with RUNME.ELF from 1.2 (someone posted it on another thread) No luck, still black screen.
That new "RUNME.ELF" differs from the old ones, in that it expects to find a "BOOT.ELF" program file (normally uLaunchELF (aka: "uLE")) in one of the locations traditionally used by modchips or exploits. The simplest way to install such a file so that it works is to create the folder "mc0:/BOOT/" and then copy "BOOT.ELF" from a uLE release archive into that folder.
How can you know about bad blocks? Is there some tool to check them?
What kind of blocks are you talking about ? Data blocks on memory cards ?
If so, I wouldn't worry about it, as I still haven't experienced any such problem after using lots of MCs for quite a long time. Most likely a card with such problems will show clearly visible symptoms, such as failing to show contents properly, or even locking up the console.

Bad blocks as like the ones people get on the PSP NAND.
NAND flash is a block device. Each block has a data section plus a spare section which is used for ECC and flagging the block status.
Since the old installer used HDProjectX to flash a edited image on the memory card it would get stuck at a certain % if it hit a bad block. The new one just formats the memory card and write the files as one game would, so version 1.2 doesn't have the bad blocks problem anymore.
The memory card is capable of dealing with bad blocks on it's own if you are flashing only individual files. You can dump and reflash images from the same card as bad blocks will be on the same sectors.
But a full image from a card with no bad blocks won't work for a card with one or more.
As for the black screen it could be the mod chip (if the console has one) or the runme.elf file.
Version 1.2 worked for me on every single NTSC U/C (USA/Canada) console I have here, once I dealt with the install/memory card creation issues.

Just another comment about the flash, I replaced the flash chip on my oldest memory card. I expected KC and KBit to change but they didn't. Seems like the sony chip on the memory card that has a unique ID.
Replacing the memory (originally a Toshiba chip) for a Samsung memory taken from a dead webcam with still picture function restored the memory card to it's past glory.
8MB NAND flash memory is a sort of generic device so it's possible to find them on memory cards, USB sticks and old cameras
Does not work on a PAL "DTL-H30002S"
Debugging Station.
Guess, its becuase it does not have the Dvdplayer?
Any chances to get it running on debugging stations?

Works on my v4 NTSC-U/C with both a 32MB Datel card and an 8MB licensed Nyko one. In both cases hdproject/mcflasher dies at the "DO NOT REMOVE MC OR TURN OFF CONSOLE." message seemingly regardless of card, slot, settings and even the USB drive the card image is on. The 1.2 installer also failed. 1.2b works perfectly.

Thanks for clearing that up! I can only install using 1.1 method (flashing the 8mb USA memcard image) and it goes nice and fast, meaning my memcard does not have bad blocks. With the current runme.elf I get a black screen.
I tried with runme.elf from ver. 1.2 and also got a black screen, now I will try creating a BOOT folder and copying ule elf there (renamed to boot.elf)

IT WORKED!
-Used 1.1 installation method (flashing memory card with hdproject-mcflasher)
-Replaced RUNME.ELF with the one from 1.2
-Made a new folder named BOOT in mc1: where I copied ulaunchelf342.elf renamed as BOOT.ELF.
And finally, the MAGIC:
It seems my modchip is interfering with the process. When I turn on my ps2, I keep the upper button pushed (the one with the green light) a few seconds, then I can see some inclined bars for a sec and voila! launchelf appears.
So it is confirmed, it works on my V3 ps2, spch-30001 NTSC, original 8mb memory card.

Work
Free MC Boot V1.2 Beta
PS2 PAL V13
Max Memory 16mb
Mass swissbit 512mb
Installation good and easy.
I can launch elf from mass and memorycard.
From cd and dvd, I have to boot with an original game and then do the Swap trick and use the magic keys to do the swap.
It is need to do the swap trick for Snes Station, Pgen and all homebrew
Anyway, thanks to everyone who made this project.

what u mean in "Work"?
U mean works or not ULE?
Or u mean works or not launch Ps2 backups?
I got to work ULE in a v9 NTSC console, but when i go to filebrowser and go in "cdfs:" it crash.
I replaced the RUNME.elf from 1.1 to 1.2 and got to work in my modded Ps2(Obvius), but when i tried in the unmodded v9 still crash when i try explore the cdfs:

When you say 'crash', what exactly do you mean ?
Please be aware that failure to boot a disc, signaled with the usual red screen does NOT constitute a crash. That is merely the normal response of a PS2/PStwo console to any attempt to boot a disc with illegal format, which includes ALL home-burned discs except those with valid DVD-Video content.
Note also that the "Free McBoot" does NOT even attempt to modify the disc booting behaviour. It is purely a method for booting homebrew programs from memory cards, and nothing else. But the programs booted that way may still open doors to backup usage (eg: HDLoader, SwapMagic, etc).

Free McBoot IS NOT INTENDED (and it will never) TO DIRECTLY BOOT YOUR BACKUP GAMES.
I think i will include this in Free McBoot usage.txt.
For those who have this dream, I hope for you that someone could write an external elf with these abilities.

I agree with you!
Free McBoot is a method for booting homebrew programs from memory cards, and, or, from mass usb drive.
And It Works Great!
5 Stars
In my opinion, at moment it is the best method to launch elf files, and probably will be the best 4ever.
And I thank you very much jimmikaelkael, for every you have made.
I reply in this thread , (since all this is fresh), to people know that free McBoot works on my Hardware.
I guess, it would be nice, to have a list of all ps2 models with the diferent regions, that have a confirm that works .
Thanks Dlanor ;)

Well, I don't beg so much :)
I would be very happy and thankfull if someone could make an external elf to have acess to homebrew discs,
like the DMS modchip have done.
With that ability, we could play lots of emulator and games.
For example, the Super Nintendo, Nintendo, Master System, Genesis emulators...
And others games like Beats of Rage, and others...
And we know that tomorrow will apear more games.

V1.2c works great on my V4 NTSC ps2. Using datel memory max 16. Also it worked with version 1.1. This is so much easier than using an exploit.....My V4 doesn't like the the blue Cd's at all. Now I don't need a trigger dics....
The last update was so easy to instal. Great work!!!!

FreeMcBoot is only for US and European consoles. Other consoles bearing NTSC U/C or PAL markings are not compatible.
Neme's embed solution works on any console if you can extract the DVD player. It's a bit tricky but it works for any region. I made a memory card for my US consoles with embed for testing and it works fine. I have a JP OSD installed on the same card, too.
