View Full Version : Is it possible to boot this emulator off the USB Flash Drive?

Well, I have the USB Flash Drive from the AR Max EVO and was wondering if I can boot this emu off of that flash drive. Also, is it possible to use the PS2 Save Builder to add the GBC Roms to a AR Max save format and then transfer it to the memcard? Well, here's how I would do the rom to memory card method:
1. Open up PS2 Save Builder 0.8
2. Right click on the blank areas (Where files would be shown) and click Add files
3. Add the necesary files like the icon files + the GBC roms (Well, I think you might have to do this one-by-one for each rom you're adding unless the emu can read the roms on one PS2 Save)
4. When done, save as .max and then put into the flash drive
5. Load AR Max on the PS2, insert your flash drive into the USB port and enter the Memory Card Manager
6. Move the newly formed .max file from the USB Flash Drive to the memory card, uncrush the .max file and the roms should appear as save files
As I said, I never tried this before (The above steps is to just mention what I would do) but was wondering if this method will work. If it does, just let me know. Thanks!

Your question on using Save Builder is dead on. That will work wonderfully.
Don't forget to make an icon file and icon.sys file so that the file will not show up as corrupt. Also don't use sub directories in the MC because this can corrupt data as well. To make an icon use BMP2Icon and for the icon.sys file use Save Builders premade file and name the icon as MYICON.ICN like in the icon.sys file. DO NOT USE SPACES IN THE NAME OF THE SAVE: this will cause corruption when using a backup device such as uLE and possibly CB, AR and others.
If your using this on a Fat PS2 why not go ahead and use the same technique to install the Exploit and then use uLE to launch said EMUs from any needed device.

Yeah, I figured out that I had to actually put the roms into the .max file and make it like how you would make the exploit file for your memory card (I also figured out that you can put multiple roms in one file but the recommended amount would be 3-4 for each since any more than that tends to end up as corrupted data). Also, does this emulator support sound because I don't hear any. Just wondering though.

Sound is supported, but not very pretty, so by default it's disabled. You can enable it yourself in the emulator menu, opened with the 'Start' button in the emulator versions I've released.
You can also check/edit the CNF file of those versions using the text editor of uLE, since those "INFOGB.CNF" files are standard text files, similar in format to the CNF file of uLE. (In fact I used the GB and NES emulators as 'test benches' for developing the text based CNF-handling of uLE.)

There were CNF files? Btw, I downloaded your version and it didn't come with any cnf files.
EDIT: Okay, this is really weird but for some reasons, I can't get this emu to run on my PS2 anymore :( . I ran it from my USB drive through AR MAX but it's not working anymore. I can't even use the memory card exploit method to boot this either! Earlier, I took out the emu so that I can do a quick save transfer (Well, I ran out of room sorta) but when I reinsert it, it's not working. Does anyone know how I can make it work again?
EDIT 2: Well dlanor, it turns out your version won't boot from my USB drive but the one from the xmas pack does >.< . Any way I can get yours to work?

Try using usbadvance, here its what i did and it works great
- make a cd image of infogb with the games(like you were tu burn a cd) with the setting mode 2/xa and ISO 9660 level 2/joliet.
- mount the cd image with daemon tools
- install it with usbextreme game installer on your usb drive
now you can boot usbadvance with ulaunchelf and start playing.
note: remenber to edit the .cnf file before making the cd image to enable sound and to specify to where you wanna exit the emu.

Actually, I don't have USBextreme nor USBAdvance :( . I think it's because I need to use something like keylauncher or launchelf since I was using ARMax to boot the GB emu. And then I found out ARMax was a really poor elf launcher >.< .

The earliest releases didn't have any, but the latest do.
You will find it inside the subfolder named "PS2GB", which is intended for copying to your memory card. That is the folder in which the emulator will load/save its INFOGB.CNF file and also the ".sav" files for each game ROM.
NB: Remember to exit game to the ROM browser menu before quitting the emulator, to be sure that the in-game saves are stored properly to the memory card. If you simply turn off the PS2 without going to the ROM browser you will lose the results of that gaming session.

The launchers of ARMax and of the exploit code both have very limited compatibility to various ELFs. (eg: a standard exploit file can't boot HDLoader. You need a special version for that...)
The recommended method is to use either of those launchers to start a more generic launching program, which can in turn launch whatever ELFs you need. And for fairly obvious reasons, the program I recommend for that purpose is uLaunchELF (aka: uLE), which you'll find in another subforum of this site.
When launched by uLE, my InfoGB has no problem starting from USB mass:, but note that you still need the PS2GB folder on the memory card, to hold your "INFOGB.CNF" as well as the ".sav" files needed for your GB/GBC ROMs.
Also, even if you start the emulator from mass:, this does not add that drive to the ROM browser. This browser is only designed to handle CD and MC devices, so that is where you must have your ROM files.

Does uLaunchELF stand for Unofficial Launch Elf? If so, I think I might already have that.

Yes. "Unofficial LaunchELF" == "uLaunchELF" == "uLE"
If so, I think I might already have that.
Even so, you should make sure of having a recent version (for more features and fewer bugs). You can get the latest stable release in the first post of the main 'sticky' thread of the uLE subforum. Just follow this link (http://www.ps2-scene.org/forums/showthread.php?t=37242), and download the attachment at the bottom of the first post.
