Need advice

I live in the netherlands and still waiting for my ps3, but i want to know...

I am going to put the ps3 in the livingroom so i can play my games movies etc on my hdscreen.

I wanna know if i can browse and play movies, music from my pc on my ps3, i have a router which allow file sharing.

Thats is my biggest question since know i have to convert to dvd, burn and then play it downstairs on my tv, id like to do it more faster and easier.

And i want to know, if i want to convert a movie from avi to dvd, will it go any faster if i do it on the ps3?

My PC has a 64bit amd athlon, 2800+ with 512mb ram.
I thought the ps3 will do it significantly faster.

And can U plz advice me a linux to use for these things i want to do?

ps. I have XP on my pc, and never ever worked with linux in my whole life.

I have tried both Fedora and Yellow Dog linux on my son's PS3. I'm staying with YDL because its default window manager is E17 which is more responsive than KDE or Gnome on the PS3. After much effort, I managed to install both mplayer and xine by following instructions I googled. I'm experienced with linux, but I did not find installing either media player easy (many packages that had to be installed manually.)

I then managed to play a Three Stooges short stored on my main PC on the PS3, however fullscreen mode was impossible. All I could manage was "normal" desktop size which, while larger in physical area than my PC monitor, was only a fraction of the size of my 42" HDTV.

The issue here is the functionality of the graphics driver for linux. It's dumbed-down for linux compared to the Sony game OS. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong or if someone is able to play full screen video.

Also, the linux OS is run as a virtual OS on top of the Sony OS, so the speed of the system does not seem so fast. Stay with media conversions on your PC.
